This is the best place to stay with dogs! We have stayed in many places with our dogs, and always when dogs are mentioned, you are placed in a wardrobe sized room usually tacky furniture, dogs not allowed to sit with you while you eat,BUT they will charge you £10 per dog for the privilege!! (What privilege?)
Not so here we had a lovely room towels and biscuits for our dogs and spare doggy sheets should they be needed.
We always go well prepared with dogs, but The Griffin makes it so easy.
Apart from the doggy thing, the food is fantastic, the staff are brilliant, rooms are sooo comfy, who needs a television? We will be visiting again

We had a night's stay as a Christmas present!! We went on Tuesday 25th, the pub is easy to find and the staff were all polite and helpful!! The wines are fantastic and the food excellent!! I even ate puy lentils and I normally don't like them. On this occasion was just my husband and I, but can't wait to return soon with my children and dogs!!! Outstanding

Ate here with family (party of 3) love it! - it is my current favourite place to eat. Food is amazing, setting is amazing, great open fire, wine choice and advice was also excellent, overall a great place to visit.

I have eaten here several times, and never been disappointed. On this occasion, we lunched here on our way down to the rugby in Cardiff, and picked up our keys for the room at that time. The staff were helpful and friendly, and the room was comfortable - good bed and a large enough en-suite. If you have not got enough of the basics (butter in our case) - just ask - the staff will be pleased to oblige.

Any negatives? Hardly any: I suppose it's not that far away from the road, but noise is pretty minimal - might disturb the ultra-sensitive, though at night there's not much passage; and in our case - hardly the hotel's fault - a well-lubricated guest crashed around for a while at 1am - and alarmed us by trying our door - before finding his own and going very quiet.

We were pleased to see a couple of well-behaved dogs with their owners at breakfast - maybe not everyone likes dogs though.

Just arrived back from our 2 night stay at the FFG - absolutely awesome! We couldn't recommend it highly enough. The staff are kind, they have an attentiveness which makes you feel special without being irritating and professionalism, they are so obviously proud of the Griffin. They talked to us and laughed with us and appreciated our appreciation of them. We walked in at 1 pm on Sunday 16th February feeling in need of sanctuary and a good rest and left at 10.15 am Tuesday 18th February feeling happy, relaxed, serene and thoroughly blissed out. Sunday lunch, best beef we have ever eaten, roasties just like home, yorkshire puds to die for and the most divine gravy. I could go on to describe every meal but would run out of space. Every morsel of food we ate there was to die for; right down to the piccalilli made by the chef and served with our ploughman's lunch. Truly, this is no exaggeration, OMG, the halibut !!!!! The dressed crab salad with coconut purée and coriander - so fresh, you could taste every element of it but then the sum of its parts - mouthwatering. My husband enjoyed the beer, I enjoyed the sparkling Welsh Rose which wasn't actually pink and we drank delicious wines with our meals. Breakfast was whatever you wanted basically, and served as beautifully as the other meals. They make all their own breads and the brown toasted was scrumptious.

The atmosphere and ambiance of the place is peaceful, there are newspapers and magazines to read and a cupboard full of games. We played Scrabble by the fire after our Sunday lunch, drank more wine and beer and just breathed out! We ended up sleeping in two different rooms because we found the 4 poster in room 5 a bit to rickety and squeeky, they moved us into room 6 which was vacated the next day without a murmur, we went off in the morning and when we came back our things were all moved - not one bit of a problem. Room 6 is a king double, both beds were blissfully comfy but room 6 suited us better. There was road noise from the traffic because of where the Griffin is but we can honestly say that it did not spoil our sleeping (we are used to complete peace and quiet at night but we slept there extremely well) There was noise from downstairs, creaky floorboards and people coming to bed after us (but you get that in any hotel!) you must remember it is a pub with rooms - it did not spoil our stay in any way shape or form.

Everything about the rooms was excellent, right down to the quirky fish and frog doorhandles which I absolutely loved and made me smile. Read the information in the blue book in the room about the hotel etc. it is written beautifully and sums up the place so well. They set out to achieve something lovely, something as near perfect as it could be and I believe they have achieved that and some. It was not an inexpensive two days but some of the best money we have ever spent. Anyway, I feel now I have gone on long enough (even though I could say more) This two days was just so lovely and we will be going back without a shadow of a doubt. We are already planning a family party visit!

Room Tip: Remember this is a pub with rooms - there is traffic noise, creaky floorboards and a little noise fr...

We stayed one night dinner, bed and breakfast as a birthday treat, and brought our dog with us. The accommodation is lovely, the room we had was huge, with a giant bed and sofa, and a large modern bathroom. As mentioned in other reviews the hotel is very dog friendly, and we had a bowl, towels, biscuits all made available to us on arrival. The dog also came down to eat with us!

The food is exceptional, and the setting is so un-stuffy it's just a wonderful, relaxing experience. We had different food for each course and everything we had was beautifully presented and delicious. Service was excellent, attentive but not overly so - we were never bothered unnecessarily. Breakfast was also a success and again we were allowed to bring the dog with us. I've since waxed lyrical about the place to anyone who will listen!

Only downside would be if you were particularly sensitive to sound when sleeping - the A470 is close (though it was silent in the late of night) and being a working pub you can hear work starting in the morning etc. This didn't bother us and after we left we were able to enjoy the rest of the day in Hay on Wye which is only 20 mins up the road.

This was the second time we've had lunch at The Griffin and one always worries that a second visit will not live up to the hype of one's mind. Based on lunch there today I can say that i should not have worried, the Griffin is very special indeed. For me it's the ultimate gastro pub experience. The food is utterly moreish and the setting is so cosy and charming you will not want to leave.
If you like good food and live in South/Mid Wales give it a whirl.
