You really have to alter your mindset when you stay here - really think 50 year old train compartment not hotel room!
There are lots of things about the accommodation that you simply wouldn't accept if it was a hotel room - mould around the windows from condensation, mouldy curtains that don't quite reach the bottom of the window, bathroom doors that just won't shut, a smell of damp in the bathroom and hot water running out halfway through a shower. These are quite a few things that could be put right without much effort and expense to just improve the overall experience.
That said, once you accept the quirkiness, its a great experience!
The carriage was also warmer than I thought it would be - a large radiator in the main bedroom and a small one in the bathroom.
It is also quite a weird feeling at first when the trains rattle by and your carriage vibrates!
The public areas, bar, restaurant and dining car are all lovely - great decor and the conservatory area is only 10 metres from the railway track which was great for railway enthusiasts and a novelty for us other guests!
We couldn't fault the staff, especially Sid the Manager, who was really friendly and helpful.
The continental breakfast was plentiful and a cooked breakfast is available for a small extra cost - you have to order the night before though!
We had the set menu on the first night as it was included as part of our deal - couldn't find fault with it and they were very accommodating with my dairy allergy which I hadn't advised them of in advance. After the meal we sat by the log fire and were given a complimentary shot of Zivania, a cypriot liqueur, which was a nice touch.
On the 2nd night of our stay we chose to eat in the restaurant again as normal paying guests. The menu is quite extensive and has some Greek dishes which made a nice change. The lamb Kleftiko was beautiful!
The prices are normal average restaurant prices and not overly expensive.
One of our party had a birthday and the staff presented a dessert with candles and a rendition of Happy Birthday which completed the meal brilliantly. The complimentary liqueurs were offered around again after the meal.
We had a great time here, and can't fault the value as we were on a KGB deal. If the few niggles in the rooms were put right and a little bit of decoration done, I could give it an Excellent next time.

Room Tip: For a special occasion, an upgrade to the four poster room may be worthwhile.

Thanks for your review! We really enjoyed welcoming you. The 'niggle's to which you refer are things which we are addressing as the refurbishment continues. We hope to see you again soon when it is completed!

We visited The Sidings today and found the experience highly enjoyable, from the setting, to the staff and most importantly the food! We were warmly welcomed and trusted to pick our own seating which allowed for a splendid view of the countryside and passing trains. To reiterate, the food was outstanding, fully flavoursome and just the right portion sizes. There was a Greek night the previous night which we missed but I'm confident would have been a spectacular affair given the enthusiasm of the staff! Will recommend to family and friends and look forward to visiting again in the future.

we stayed at the sidings and the accommodation was an excellent experience . we had a meal , the food was great but unfortunately we had our evening spoiled as the staff were running around like headless chickens not knowing who had ordered what. also my husband ordered crepes for sweet, after 10 mins we were told they had run out. as we were one of the first in the restaurant i cannot believe they could not have this sweet, also how can you run out of crepes, i work in a restaurant and our chefs can rustle up crepes in no time , the ingredients should be at hand unless, and i apologise if this is the case, they put a special ingredient in. my rating of is based on accommodation and food and value for money.

Spent a lovely weekend at the Siddings just outside York. I had originally booked almost 12 months earlier but had to change the date of the booking several times which I was embarrassed about but was no trouble to the gentleman I spoke too (Sid). We arrived later than planned but again it wasn't a problem. Our room was great, compact but then it was in a railway carriage. The beds were really comfy. The railway is really busy but you are staying in an old station right by the side of the East Coast main line. Breakfast was simple. We stayed for dinner, the restaurant was busy but we were able to get a table the food was simple but home-made and really tasty and good value for money. ALL the staff couldn't have been friendlier and more accommodating. I would recommend the Siddings ESPECIALLY if you like trains but was a great base to see the sights of York

Stayed for 2 nights in room 2. After reading some of the negative reviews, was a bit apprehensive about what we would find, but can honestly say that we had a great time. The room was cosy and warm. The bed was comfortable and we slept well. Even though there are trains passing by regularly, they are far enough away not to disturb you at night. Sid and the staff are very friendly and made us very welcome. We had dinner in the dining carriage on the first night, and even though it was a set menu, we had a good choice, and the food was delicious. Breakfast was continental, but there was plenty of cereals and toast, and a cooked breakfast was available at an extra cost. Anyone that wants to be critical needs to remember that they are booking a room on a train! If you want 5* luxury, pay extra and go elsewhere. We would recommend The Sidings to any of our friends, and will certainly be back.

We stayed in room 8 and our grown-up son had room 5. Apparently, our son's room was a bit cold, but that was really the only 'complaint' that we would raise. Our room was a four-poster and was perfectly adequate. I actually had to get up in the night and turn off one of the heaters because it was a bit TOO warm. :-)

The bed was a three-quarter size, but was absolutely fine for us. I don't think anyone would experience any problems with it unless they were of a very large stature.

Certainly the rooms and the bathroom are a little compact, but you have to realise that to some extent you are in a sleeper compartment on a train. That's part of the fun. There are more conventional hotels nearby, but surely people don't come to the sidings to sleep in a standard hotel room? We found it to be a really unique experience.

Yes, I was awoken at regular intervals by the sound of trains rushing pass in the wee small hours, but again, I knew this was going to happen. I actually had earplugs with me and would have used them if I'd thought it a major problem, but it really wasn't.

The breakfast was, again, perfectly adequate. We were happy with the selection of cereals, fruit, toast etc. on offer, but for an extra £4.95 per head we could have had a full English. Good value in my book.

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. There were guests at the hotel that had travelled from Glasgow and they also enjoyed their stay. The owner and his staff were always warm and friendly.

We hope to visit again when our friends come over from America next year.

Room Tip: Room 8 was nice and is a bit further away from the train line (although you wouldn't know it!) T...

This could be better with the services of a good handyman, heating engineer and restaurant manager. We unfortunately had trouble keeping warm in the public area without being right next to the fire.
In a lot of ways they tried hard, the staff were friendly and some of the areas were modern, such as the restaurant toilets which had nice contemporary basins, but wood should be painted regularly and if you are in a windy place, secondary glazing is really essential for sound proofing as well as warmth and staff should warm the rooms before guests arrive.
The food was not bad, tasty meatballs for starter followed by chicken in a mushroom sauce were tasty, but chocolate sauce on an apple crumble and custard? No.
Likewise lovely of the staff to offer something with your aperitif, - nuts, yes, but chocolate buttons and truffles, no.- (They come after the meal, with coffee or tea or liqueurs!)
Get these things right and less hap-hazard it will be.
For those of you who want to spend your hols sleeping in a tiny railway carraige it could be bliss. Personally I was not able to sleep - (every time a train went by resulted in me being shaken awake) - you might love it, but too many other aspects of this unusual place were not to our expectation.
Suggest until upgrading done, please obtain more comfy chairs and throws for your guests as a minimum effort and learn how to wash and dry dishes efficiently, it's just basic stuff really.
