In line with other reviewers, we found the Sidings to have friendly and attentive staff and the food was good. It does seem a bit odd to have railway paraphernalia juxtaposed with a Mediterranean restaurant. I can only guess that the enterprise was taken over from the original rail enthusiast who set it up and that the carriages have not been maintained as they should. All of the carriages have lost their original liveries and are now painted with red primer externally. Some of the compartments in one of the coaches are closed off and full of junk that you can see.
However, it is OK to stay for a couple of nights, but not any longer!

Stayed at the Sidings for 2 nights B&B + 3 course meal on first night and what an experience. Although carriage needed re-decorating and a bit snug it was fun and comfortable with clean bedding and linen. The restaurant and bar area were very comfortable and the food fantastic and even ate there on second night, Meditteranean menu as well as English and I would recommend the 'Kleftico'. Staff were really friendly and Sid the owner who is Cypriot was always on hand for a laugh and joke and to keep an eye on things. We travelled 290 miles to get there and was well worth it and would DEFINATELY do again.

Room Tip: You must remember it is right next to the railway line so expect noise whichever carriage you are in...

Booked something different for my 50th Birthday... ..... It is what it is....Old 1950`s railway carriages. Don't expect 5 star..
The mattress & bedding were very clean, I would have dusted & hovered round had a vacuum been in reach, skirting boards & under bed not be done in ages.......but I am fussy. Toilet & shower basic & working ordered. I think a few £100 spent could make the carriages more appealing..,,,, Curtain/carpets/etc all seen better days...
The reception and dining area 10/10, the manger & staff 10/10, food was 10/10 .
Cannot understand complaints about the noise from the trains through the night ???........ The Sidings is at the side of the railway tracks !!! Do people not read the location before booking.....
Of course its noisy....but all part of the experience .
Had an issue with a light fitment humming in the bathroom at 9.30pm, manager sent for electrician got it sorted in 20 mins.....Brilliant x
Drinks prices very reasonable.
Anyone wanting a overnight stay and something different then its great.
If you want all mod-cons and spacious room then its not for you.
All in all we enjoyed it and I think the friendly staff made all the difference. x

We stayed at the Sidings Hotel on a 2 night break on 29th June 2014 .We had such an enjoyable stay , we were welcomed soon as we set foot through the door. Every member of staff was so friendly and attentive. We arrived early because we had been staying at another hotel for the night. We ordered a glass of wine each and it was presented in a nice wine glass, I am always fussy about my glass. Our room was soon ready for us, these are original train carriages ,i think from the 1950 s ,so the purpose is to get the feel and experience of sleeping on a train , something different and obviously there cannot be too many changes made because it would take away the true effect of this time period. A few updates are going to be made , some refurbishment , new curtains etc . My attitude is Rome was nt built in a day and things have to work as a plan ,as with any business to be cost affective. We do a lot of travel and every trip is varied to the type of accomodation and this is a train station with a train on each side of it , one being a restaurant ,which is delightful and the other being carriages for bedrooms, we were not expecting a 5 star suite ha ha. This is a feature hotel . One would not go to a five star hotel and expect to be in a train carriage, It is a case of common sense.
The hotel is in a beautiful location and we sat in the garden, it is great all the trains that come past. The food was amazing we dined on both nights and could not fault the food.. We had a lovely time. Bobby the manager is so friendly and we shared some good laughs . We met Sid the owner , again a really nice guy, they do all possible to make ones stay good. A different experience to stay at a train station hotel . Life should be varied. Also fabulous value.

Room Tip: Like I said, refurbishment is to take place and remember it is a carriage. All was fine. I have tic...

We could not fault our stay. Food was excellent. Staff very pleasant and friendly. Although carriage was small it was fit for purpose and the shower was hot and powerful .My husband enjoyed the train spotting. Ouzo shots definitely a new experience. We were definitely relaxed when we left. Thanks to Sid and his staff for a most enjoyable stay. We will be back !

Room Tip: Light sleepers may like to take ear plugs due to the proximity of the East Coast Mainline, but it di...

My husband and I decided to stay here as we used to go to a place just outside York called Buffers when we were just starting out 31yrs ago, Buffers closed many years now so we thought we try the Sidings. A bad decision, even though we had booked they didn't seem to be expecting us. After filling out forms we were shown our room, the room smelt very foisty on opening the door, even the waiter commented on it. The room was very small as expected but it had not been cleaned in a long time, no mattress protector on bed, mould stains on the curtains and the walls. Mirror filthy, stains on carpet. The bathroom where do I start, dirty, painted over tiles , shower taps hanging off walls. My husband used it and the shower tray filled to the brim and over
flowed onto floor because the drain was blocked.
What a shame as these old carriages could be made so lovely and authentic still in the right hands, must say that the food is lovely, the staff are friendly too.
We stayed here for our anniversary to be a trip down memory lane but I would not recommend anyone staying until these problems are addressed, there is also no atmosphere after eating, no music playing or entertainment even though it was a Friday evening.

Wont be back in a hurry :(
