Once again we visited this great pub operating a fantastic availability of food,it was fathers day and they had been busy since 9.00am with breakfasts, then carrying on with lunch ,we booked a table for 6.00pm thinking it would have quietened down, but on arrival we found the place to be packed,we decided to have a drink in the beer garden, where the staff have made a great effort in making the customers welcome with a very tidy patio area and flower baskets on the buildings which give great colour,we had a lamb dinner, and a large yorkshire pudding filled with steak & kidney, then followed by two excellent desserts the food was fantastic and the staff were as usual very obliging and helpful,as we left at around 7,15pm customers were still pouring in,it is a pleasure to see such a local pub bursting with good food and friendly staff, the few people who have given this establishment a bad review are either not on this planet or are used to eating at fast food chains,we will be back very soon just a shame only one review is allowed each month.

“Cracking food and great staff”
Reviewed 10 June 2014 via mobile

The billet is now back to its best, good beer, great food and friendly staff. The steak pie is to die for and my wife really enjoyed the roast beef. All reasonably priced as well.

“Ssshhh! Don't tell anyone”
Reviewed 9 June 2014 via mobile

Keep this to yourself but I've just found the perfect Sunday lunch.

Me and my husband called in for Sunday lunch on our way to a gig in a York. The pub is in a beautiful location, close to the site of the Battle of Towton.

The young lady who served us was smiling and friendly. She was also very knowledgeable about every item on the menu. We later discovered that she is the restaurant manager!

We ordered beef and pork and didn't have to wait too long before our meal arrived. We had asked for small portions and they were perfectly sized. The Yorkshire Pudding was perfect and the meat was melt in the mouth tender. Home made apple sauce was the perfect accompaniment to my pork and the shared vegetables were well cooked. My only criticism is that the roast potatoes were hard on the outside (maybe they'd been kept warm for too long).

We shared a slice of Bakewell tart and wished we'd had a slice each as it was so delicious.

We will be back very soon to try other items on the menu, but sshhh, keep it quiet, it's a real gem of a find.

“Good pub grub”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Ten of us went here for a meal prior to a wedding the next day. I thought we were going somewhere really special and whilst the choice of food was excellent and indeed the food itself very good the atmosphere and ambience was very disappointing. We had a great time and that was mainly due to us all having fun.
