Owner description: The MV Uchuck III, a 136-foot passenger and freight vessel providing service through Vancouver Island's historic Nootka Sound, Esperanza Inlet and Kyuquot Sound. Relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Wild West Coast as you tour its inlets, witness the MV Uchuck III deliver freight to remote fish farms, logging camps and remote resorts. Our schedule provides day cruises through some of Vancouver Island's most spectacular scenery, perfect for a short adventure or family vacation. Explore the shores and waterways of isolated inlets, and see a variety of wildlife - black bears, eagles, sea otters, Pacific dolphins, gray and killer whales. Like to get adventurous? Take advantage of the Uchuck's route to wet launch your kayak or be dropped off at the Nootka trailhead for a four to five day hiking trip along Vancouver Island's most remote and pristine coastal trail - without the long wait list of the famed West Coast Trail.

We had an excellent experience on the UChuck lll day trip along Nootka Sound to Friendly Cove.
The staff were very friendly and informative. The views were breathtaking. On Friendly Cove, we learned a lot about the history of the location.

We have taken this trip before and will again. It is a complete get-away from the city. And yes a window into a way of life that few see. The crew are wonderful. If you love the ocean, and wild west coast inlets and won't pout if it rains you'll be so glad you did this adventure. We saw a bear, sea otters, and hump back whales and met wonderful people.

When on Vancouver Island this trip is a MUST DO, the scenery was amazing, service impeccable, clean safe boat. Three hours in Friendly Cove where the beaches and lighthouse are amazing! I will make this an annual event!! Thanks Glenda and Alberto.

An excellent way to see part of the Pacific Coast of Vancouver Island. The trip is excellent value - a full day on the UchuckIII (ex minesweeper) from 9am to 6pm. The boat provides delivery of supplies to salmon fish farms, floating fishing lodges & remote comunities on part of the Pacific coastline of Vancouver Island.

Took the Nootka Sound day trip aboard the Uchuck III. It was a unique experience paying to watch other people work, but it was a window into a world that most Canadians will never see. Another passenger was the manager of the First-nations facility at Friendly Cove and learned a lot about the local history and challenges of aboriginal people in the area. Unfortunately, there is no live interpretation on the boat so this conversation was my best chance to learn about what we were seeing. There is a printed publication available for passengers that has lots of info on the area, history, communities, etc. but I found it a bit disconcerting not to have an announcement about where we had stopped or where we were. Once you got used to the non-tour feel, it was refreshing to travel without knowing where I was going or where I was, just enjoying the scenery as it went by. We were lucky to spot 3 Orcas feeding off the port side. From our photos (and with the help of a naturalist in Telegraph Cove) we were able to determine that we had seen T069C, a transient killer whale male born in 1995. Transient orcas eat marine mammals and not seen as often so we felt pretty lucky to make this sighting. The food was tasty and home-made and seating was comfy on a warm day. If it was raining and there were lots of passengers, I think it would feel cramped. Overall, well worth doing for a voyage like no other.
