“Oh so good!!”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

Oyster Opera is another word for peaceful, calm, tranquil, chilled out getaway! The resort is small (just 10 cottages) but beautifully maintained, clean and neat. The open-air bathing area is unique!! Gul Mohammed is hands-on with running the place and is very helpful, obliging and hospitable. The food is authentic and amazing!! Fresh seafood, superb mutton stew, a variety of vegetables served on banana leaf accompanied by fresh fruit juices, buttermilk and digestive jeera water. Lazing the afternoon on a hammock by the backwaters qualifies as heaven!! This is also a great place to experience how Gul has contributed to the local community thru mussel farming. Unfortunately, we didnt get to taste the oysters and I'd love to return to Oyster Opera for that!

Room Tip: All cottages on the backwater banks have a beautiful view!

The Oyster Opera Island Resort is a charming countryside property surrounded by lovely backwaters offering a relaxing and rejuvenating experience for the weather beaten city dweller. The owner Mr. Gul along with his small but dedicated team of workers sedulously manage every requirement of the visitor ranging from booking to the departure. The cottages are comfortable and food sumptuous. A boat ride through the scenic backwaters and canoeing through a private stretch will keep the adventurous occupied while the laid back can simply relax on arm chairs or the hammock by the cottage-side. Stayed there during the last week of May 2014. The place offers stunning views of a beautiful landscape and is worth every penny spent.

A pearl in God's own country.Great place to plan your vacation. The place is just perfect to relax. You have everything you would like to have on a holiday.Excellent food variety , but be ready to accept local flavour.A wide range of cottages -Clean and well to choose .Though the price seems to be on a higher side , the great hospitality extended by the staff and Mr Gul Mohammed -the Owner of this resort, compensates for this. The resort is on island which is around 4.5 km long.On one side you have the back water , a few minutes of boat ride reaches you to the beach front , which is almost like a private beach as it is not crowded .-though you need to carry your own food and water as there are no shops to sell you anything. And for those who are just married --the beach gives ample privacy.
For the kids there is a play area ( though not very well maintained ) and they can also go boat ing/canoeing on their own ( better to have an adult with them ).
Addition to a visit to the nearby beach , we were taken around the backwater to show the mussel farming area.
The resort offers a wide variety of staying options, including the boat houses. We stayed in the Oyster Pearl -which is something like a tree house ,which the kids really enjoyed. The stay was very comfortable and the best part was that we never felt like turning on the A.C even during the day though it was a summer. However we felt that the boat houses were not so clean.

Room Tip: The Oyster Pearl ( tree house ) is the best option to stay at -a kids will enjoy it.You can reach th...

Lovely location with limited people around. Perfect for taking time off. Great hospitality with even better food. The food is great for local taste buds and recommended for people wanting to try a rich variety of local food. Not recommended for people seeking a continental fare.

The location, rooms, etc are clean and great with great service. Do canoe when you get there. The price is fair for the whole experience.

A beautiful picturesque quiet, fishing village setting with surrounding mussel farm estuaries. Stay cozy, small cottage style and private. Management, Service, Cleanliness and Food below average. Recommend no more than 1-2 days stay. Overpriced. 3 star at best. Can think of better options to experience back waters. Bekal Fort/Beach/Park are the best nearby attractions.

Visited on 19th Jan 2014. We were 16 booked 6 cottages. Rooms are clean and well maintained. People expecting 5 star facilities may not be a place to look at. It is homely feeling. Food was excellent. Remebering theTaste of the food still tickles the taste buds. Gul was very friendly and down to earth person. Ready to help any time. Always sitting in open space and jsut a call away in the night times. Place is clam and beautyful. Altogether it was over the expectations after seeing all the reviews. Visit before it gets crowded and commercialised. Request to Gul to keep the same services and not making too much commercial.

Room Tip: top room on the twin bamboo cottage gives you best view

While Allepey's backwaters are better known, it also means they are more crowded. Oyster Opera, in Kasargod, is the perfect way to discover the backwaters without the crowds.
Everything about the place is perfect - the clean rooms, the efficient staff, the range of activities like visits to empty beaches and a swim in the backwaters.
But perhaps the best thing about Oyster Opera is the food. Every meal is bursting with both scrumptious vegetarian options as well as fresh seafood options. Through my travels in Kerala, this was the best food I ate. Anywhere.
