Free Rein Guest Ranch
Reviewed 10 August 2014

My daughter and I spent four days at Free Rein Ranch in mid-June. We are both riders and owned a horse for many years so it was very important to us to find a ranch where horses are treated with love and respect and where the well-being of the horses is paramount. Debbie surpassed our expectations. She is a wonderful proponent of natural horsemanship, a talented teacher and is extremely patient with both humans and horses. My daughter and I are English riders and Debbie helped us to appreciate the differences between western and English riding. I was so impressed that guests work with their horses to form a relationship before getting on them. Debbie never rushed the process and gave us and the horses a great deal of her time. It was an utter pleasure riding these happy horses in such a beautiful landscape. We had lots of choice about the length of our rides as well as destinations. The wranglers were equally pleasant and helpful, were excellent guides and adhered to Debbie's philosophy of respect for horses and patience when working with them. Debbie's parents were wonderful. Her mother made delicious meals for us and was happy to modify her dishes to meet the needs of my daughter who is a vegetarian. I would heartily recommend Free Rein Ranch for experienced as well as beginning riders. It is a good place for anyone who loves horses and enjoys the peace and tranquility of a beautiful environment.

My wife really wanted to go horseback riding for her 30th birthday, so I started looking for somewhere for us to get away together, away from the kids. From the moment I talked to Debbie on the phone I knew we were in for a treat. She was very friendly and happy to answer any questions I had (I had lots). My wife and I do not drive so Debbie came and met us at the Greyhound station. We were greeted with smiles and big hugs right away. We stayed in one of the log cabins on the lake for 4 nights, and really enjoyed how private the ranch was. The staff there was very nice and the food was great. The horses were happy and healthy, and you could tell that they were loved very much by Debbie and her staff. We were able to take part in grooming and feeding the horses, as well as hosing them down after a hot day of riding. We also really enjoyed kayaking on the lake, and sitting on our lakefront deck to take in the sights and sounds. Debbie even drove us to go whitewater rafting on our last day and waited for us before driving us to Kamloops to meet our bus home. We can't stop bragging about how much fun we had together and how really great the service was. We are already planning our next visit!

Room Tip: Get a lakefront cabin for sure, it was amazing.

Beginning of May we had the chance to stay 4 nights at Free Rein with Debbie and her team. It was a wonderful experience. Great hospitality, professional business and passion for people, horses and nature in perfection. Not only that the Ranch is one of the nicest places we have seen in BC, Debbie, her parents and the whole team are doing a great job and from the first moment on, you're feeling like being a part of the Free Rein Family. Thanks to all for the incredible experiences and the fantastic time we had at this place. Mario, Angelica, Elena and Levin from Switzerland

We found Free Rein after an extensive search for ranches in the US and Canada. The owner, Debbie, handpicked our horses out of her herd to compliment our riding ability. The food and hospitality were spectacular. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us, and we only have positive things to say. We arrived at Free Rein as horse riders, but left as accomplished horsemen and we felt like family the entire trip.

It was already our second stay at Free Rein Guest Ranch and we will definitely come back many more times!
The first time we came to this lovely place was a few of years ago as a couple. Coming from a crowded country we were looking for a holiday away from the typical mass tourism. For days we compared all the ranch descriptions over the internet and found Free Rein - it seemed to be too good to be true. When we finally arrived we were overwhelmed by what we found: A warm and friendly welcome, a comfortable private cabin overlooking the lake, peacefulness, many quiet places for relaxing our mind, delicious meals, very individual riding times and many inspiring talks with Debbie, her family and other like minded guests.
Now we came back a second time as a family- with our 3 year old daughter. For us it surely was the best place to take her for her first riding experience away from home. And again we were not mistaken by our choice. Debbie made everything possible to not just give my husband and me a wonderful time; also our daughter had a thrilling adventure of which she cannot stop talking about. She was taken out many times riding on her horse Molly, was able to help with brushing, saddling and feeding. She (usually very shy with strangers) immediately felt very comfortable around Debbie and her staff - even without speaking any English- that we had no problem leaving her with them and going for a longer ride.
During our 10 day stay we went on many different exciting trails, never getting bored. Being not very experienced riders it was a pleasure for us to ride on very balanced horses. The horses at Free Rein are treated with the same friendliness and respect as the guests. Wonderful to see how patiently Debbie trains her horses not just for the safety of her guests but also for the horses well-being.
Besides riding we really enjoyed the many other activities: canoeing on the private lake, hiking in the bushes and viewing wildlife, taking roping lessons, learning about natural horsemanship, we went to a local rodeo and we really enjoyed the games room with about a thousand different games to play - not just for kids. And of course the home cooked meals (locally grown, fresh, healthy and yummy!) were always highlights of the day as we could share stories with Debbie and other guests.
What makes us always wanting to come back is the combination of having beautiful nature and quietness when you want to clear your mind and feeling that the friendliness and hospitality is meant truly and comes from the heart!

Our stay at Free Rein Ranch the last week of May was a great week despite the weather. Apparently the amount of rain was unusual for that time of year. Debbie and her parents did everything possible to make our stay a good one as did the Kiwi wranglers. Debbie did an outstanding job of selecting horses for me and my husband who is a lifelong rider and horse owner. This is the fifth dude ranch we have visited and the horses and equipment were definitely well cared for. On rides with Cherie (excellent wrangler) we were fortunate to see wildlife including bear. Ability levels are taken into consideration and riders are grouped accordingly. It is an especially good ranch for those who want to improve their riding and horse handling skills as Debbie and the wranglers are more than willing to provide instuction as needed.
We loved our room in the lodge - especially convenient since we did have rainy times. It was perfect for a couple and had a lovely view from the balcony.
I would definitely recommend Free Rein Ranch to anyone looking for a small ranch with good horses in a beautiful setting. Debbie does an excellent job helping to plan a trip to the ranch and responds to emails and phone calls promptly.
