This was our first activity in a three-week visit to NZ, booked in part to keep us awake after a long flight from Toronto via Vancouver until our hotel room was ready. What an introduction to the country. From David, we got geology, history, flora, fauna, Maori culture, architecture, a splendid walk through the CBD, Albert Park and the University of Auckland grounds. Without him, we'd never have known to wander through the lobby area of the Vero Centre. So much of what he told us reappeared in more detail over the subsequent three weeks as we made our way down through Rotorura, Tongariro, and the west coast of the South Island. He pointed out the pohutukawa tree, New Zealand's "Christmas tree" whose red flowers bloom in mid-December. They were pretty well done for the season in Auckland, but still in profusion in Wellington. Knowing things like that to look for made the trip so much more enjoyable. He also recommended a terrific restaurant -- Vivace. We ate there twice.

My husband and I arranged for this walking tour when we arrived in Auckland on the Celebrity Solstice. We didn't have anything planned for the day, and booked this tour at the i-Site Visitor Centre near the port. We met our guide, Dave, about 20 minutes later, and found out that we were the only ones booked on the tour. This was great, as the price we paid (NZ$30 each) was a great value for what turned out to be a private walking tour! Dave is 1/8th Maori, so he had a different perspective on the history of New Zealand and the Maori people than most other people we had heard from on our trip. It was very interesting to learn about the city from someone whose family had been there basically since it was founded! He was incredibly knowledgeable and you can tell he really enjoys teaching about New Zealand's history. Dave also pointed out to us a few shops where everything is made in New Zealand by New Zealanders from local materials, and we were sure to visit those shops after our tour when we wanted to pick up some souvenirs.

This tour was well worth the price, as we learned so much more about the city, the country, and the culture, and had a much more enjoyable time than we would have had we just wandered around downtown for a little while. I would definitely recommend this tour!

This walking tour took us along the waterfront and throughout a large section of downtown Auckland. Our guide Terry was very friendly. He patiently answered all of our questions. We then ended up at the Skytower, which was quite impressive. All in all, this tour was well worth the money.
