Didn’t know this place existed until invited by friends with a GrabOne voucher. Spouse and self are delighted to be invited and enjoyed some of the chosen meals. The watery Sticky Rice Pudding would have gone down like a lead balloon if it was heavier instead of a brown liquid with sediment. Chef’s Choice of appetiser was good. Spouse left almost all of her Main which appeared as being potatoes in potato coloured soup. My Main was good and totally acceptable. A friend was greatly impressed with his ‘rare’ steak which he insisted he was cutting with a spoon. Other friend enjoyed a whole flounder.
Pleasures: Finding parking immediately on site. A crowded restaurant on a Tuesday suggesting the owners were doing something correctly. Strangely, and if it is of concern, it is less costly to buy 4 x small bottles of bubbles than one large one – plus one gets more bubbles.
The opposite: Not a BYO. Silly idea of management, as overheard, asking for one bill per table when 2 x 2 diners, each couple with a voucher, share the table. As most, or many, of the 4-cover tables comprised two tables placed together it would be simple for the diners to shift tables apart though am uncertain about dealing with the cloth unless one carries scissors. Mildly concerned about the flambéed steak flame reaching the sprinkler sensor above – if sprinklers work in this old pub. Printed menus are grubby from use and need reprinting. Friend tried to book by phone. Her phone showed 20 calls to the restaurant - always engaged.
Overall, a pleasant evening with good friends in a ‘different’ recycled antique NZ pub atmosphere, unquestionably 3* food, the sounds of a full-house enjoying themselves with personal chatter, surprisingly easy parking plus, for spouse and self, not costing a bean. What better evening could one enjoy on a Tuesday?
