“okay lunch, pretty average, but not expensive.”
Reviewed 8 February 2014

While in Auckland on vacation from the States, we stopped here for lunch. It's on the Green Line bus route, but we were walking back from the Auckland museum. I had the chicken curry with bread for $12.50, and my wife pad Thai for about $10. The pad Thai tasted a little burned, and needed more coconut milk. There was very little chicken in my curry. they had a decent enough buffet on Thursdays and Fridays, and we probably should have done that instead of ordering off the menu. We had to ask several times for napkins which were never brought and we finally grabbed some off other tables.

“UNQUESTIONABLY DIFFERENT”
Reviewed 28 January 2014

Didn’t know this place existed until invited by friends with a GrabOne voucher. Spouse and self are delighted to be invited and enjoyed some of the chosen meals. The watery Sticky Rice Pudding would have gone down like a lead balloon if it was heavier instead of a brown liquid with sediment. Chef’s Choice of appetiser was good. Spouse left almost all of her Main which appeared as being potatoes in potato coloured soup. My Main was good and totally acceptable. A friend was greatly impressed with his ‘rare’ steak which he insisted he was cutting with a spoon. Other friend enjoyed a whole flounder.
Pleasures: Finding parking immediately on site. A crowded restaurant on a Tuesday suggesting the owners were doing something correctly. Strangely, and if it is of concern, it is less costly to buy 4 x small bottles of bubbles than one large one – plus one gets more bubbles.
The opposite: Not a BYO. Silly idea of management, as overheard, asking for one bill per table when 2 x 2 diners, each couple with a voucher, share the table. As most, or many, of the 4-cover tables comprised two tables placed together it would be simple for the diners to shift tables apart though am uncertain about dealing with the cloth unless one carries scissors. Mildly concerned about the flambéed steak flame reaching the sprinkler sensor above – if sprinklers work in this old pub. Printed menus are grubby from use and need reprinting. Friend tried to book by phone. Her phone showed 20 calls to the restaurant - always engaged.
Overall, a pleasant evening with good friends in a ‘different’ recycled antique NZ pub atmosphere, unquestionably 3* food, the sounds of a full-house enjoying themselves with personal chatter, surprisingly easy parking plus, for spouse and self, not costing a bean. What better evening could one enjoy on a Tuesday?

“Not recommended”
Reviewed 4 November 2013

The place was noisy and crowded. We waited an hour for our mains. The entree was small, overcooked, and bland. Only 3 ‘vegetarian’ options – one of them was a chicken dish!!! The mains were ok but over-flavored. Vegetarian dish much smaller than the other dishes, but same price. The ‘desserts’ were unbelievable and an insult to the customer. The tropical fruit salad consisted of one teaspoon of apple and kiwifruit; the rice pudding was less than a tea cup full of watery, sweet brown liquid. The dessert we originally wanted was sold out at 8 pm. Perhaps, customers with vouchers might have been treated differently to regulars. It definitely was a rip-off and we cannot recommend this place.

“Not an enjoyable experience”
Reviewed 29 June 2013

I went to the restaurant with my family as it had been recommended to us by people we know. However, this restaurant failed to meet our expectations because we had to wait 15 minutes before a waitress approached us to order our drinks, normally it only takes a coupe of minutes. After ordering our food we received our entrees 15 minutes later which wasn't too bad and the entrees were delicious. However, we were forced to wait another 45 minutes before our mains arrived and during that time the people sitting at the table beside us received their mains 25 minutes before we did and had ordered about 10 minutes before so we were pretty disappointed about that. When we finally received our mains, we weren't extremely impresses as the food was that amazing considering we were forced to wait a long time for our food. Some vegetable were still raw and the meal wasn't as hot as we would have expected it to be. Overall it could have been nice but the service was so poor so I wouldn't go back anytime soon.
