“Restful weekend”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2014

Another visit to this lovely place. Unfortunately the weather was atrocious all weekend but it didn't really matter. The Rooms were just as comfortable and the Food delicious. The Boss had been away for a week but standards did not slip at all. Will have to go back again as it was a very quiet restful time.

Room Tip: Courtyard or Bothy Rooms did not require stairs.

We were there for a wedding in April, but stayed on a few days afterwards. The location is really lovely; in the middle of the Derbyshire dales, close to cycle paths like the Tissington trail, towns to browse around like Ashbourne, and country houses like Chatsworth and Haddon Hall. The staff are all really lovely, and during the wedding (and at all times really!) they were very friendly and efficient. The food was also excellent, both at the wedding and in general, with a wide variety available for breakfast, and different dinner menus each night. For dinner, you can get 3 courses for £16, plus a complimentary drink in the fire area before-hand, and a free carafe of wine with your meal (if you're staying in the hotel). The rooms are not that cheap, but for the service, location and room quality, it is all good value for money. Highly recommended.

We stayed for one night in early April. For dinner, B & B, for the two of us, at £138 ,it was excellent value for money. Our room in the Main House was good and dinner ( offering pre- drink (by a roaring fire), 4 courses, a small carafe of vino, and coffee) in a buzzy dining room atmosphere ( it was full with guests and others) was much appreciated on what was a very wet night. Would recommend this hotel to any of our friends visiting this area.

What can I say, a really nice little private hotel in a perfect location. We stayed in room 8 in the main house which was a lovely size with a large ensuite bathroom and additional single room attaching. We stayed on a full board basis and the eveing meals were excellent and the complimentary pre dinner drinks and wine with the meals just added to the overall expereince which cannot be faulted and the quality of the meals on both evenings was excellent with only a small suppliment required for one or two extra dishes. Breakfast was a buffet selection including full English and again cannot be faulted. Excellent at all times with a good choice. My Fiance' and I used the hotel to tour the peak district and will definitly consider stopping here again without hesitation when we next visit the Peaks. Thank you to the hotel and staff for a very pleasant stay, you have a very lovely Hotel.

Very last minute decision to call in and book a table for a few hours later. How glad we did.
The location is beautiful, service very good. Complimentary drink on arrival, 3 courses plus chews board and coffees for £25 each. Amazing.
Having experienced the restaurant, I would place this at the top of my list for places to stay in the area.
Thank you for a lovely evening.

This was a last minute booking, as recommended by a work colleague, and we were not disappointed. When we arrived (Monday), it was a little like an old folks home - lots of people on walking frames, having their lunch - and very noisy and crowded indeed in the lounge on that occasion. But there were many other things to offset this first impression. The grounds and setting were lovely - some more planting was taking place during our stay. We enjoyed watching the hens pecking in the front lawn as we ate dinner. The food really couldn't be faulted - such a range of different things for breakfast (I loved the special recipe porridge, and the smoked salmon scrambled eggs - superb!). A packed lunch was very welcome and had plenty to choose from, and the 3 course meal was delightful and very varied, with lots of choice. Service in the restaurant was really good - friendly and efficient. It was also nice to get the chance to chat to other residents whilst waiting in the lounge and whilst eating. The complimentary Pimms, carafe of wine, and cheese and biscuits (if you could manage it) was a lovely touch. We were offered a time slot - so weren't herded in all at the same time, as described on other reviews
We stayed in the Lodge - the room itself was fine - extremely comfortable beds, and a nice sized lounge area with good seating, but you could hear the creaking of floorboards with every footstep and the sound of voices from upstairs - which did set the next door dog off barking quite a lot. We were just relieved the guests above didn't move around during the night!

All in all, a really nice stay. I would say that the lady telephone receptionist was rather curt when we booked, and we didn't raise a smile from the man at reception upon arrival - but the waiting staff made a much better job of welcoming us.

We would definitely like to return - and probably go for the mid week deal - as I suspect it gets quite frantic when full to capacity.
