“Short Break”

We spent a very comfortable 4 nights at this hotel. The staff were friendly, polite and efficient. The evening meals were excellent with complimentary aperitifs and wine. The room in the lodge, where we stayed, was spacious with a separate lounge area. The hotel is also very convenient for trips to the dales and high peak as well as being in easy driving distance to Buxton where we attended the annual festival.

Room Tip: The lodge was peaceful and quiet overlooking the countryside with sounds of birds and other domest...

We've visited 5 times in last few years. It's a quirky place in an excellent setting. Rooms are immaculate and well furnished in antique style. Strongly recommend a visit especially if you're out and about walking - the packet lunch is an great touch.

The same people seem to go to Biggin Hall year after year, so they obviously enjoy it. But if you’ve never been before this might help you know what to expect…. and what not to expect.
This is not a country house hotel. It is a very ordinary hotel which just happens to be in a fine old building. For us things started badly. Our welcome was unfriendly and unhelpful; the staff on the first night (Thursday) were sullen. If you wanted a drink you had to go and find a waitress. If you wanted a menu you had to go and find one yourself. We thought we’d made a big mistake.
However, things did improve the follow evening with a change of staff. Only then were we offered a complimentary Pimms before dinner. Only then were we told we could have a complimentary carafe of house wine. We were brought a menu outside (it was in the middle of the July heat wave) and we finally got the sort of service we’d expect.
There’s a bit of a shabby feel about the place. Glasses and bottles were still sitting on the tables in the garden when we came in for breakfast. There was a pile of old toast on the floor behind the rather temperamental toaster. Some of the dining tables are unpleasantly sticky. They also seem in a hurry – as soon as a table was empty after dinner it was being laid for breakfast, leaving you feeling they wanted you to eat up and leave.
For us the place lacks two things – firstly a bar as a focal point, and secondly the presence of a genial, welcoming host (the gentleman who sorted our bill when we left would not qualify for this role).
There are good points. The location, particularly if you like walking, is great. The food was pretty good too – both dinner and the buffet breakfast. Our room, upstairs in The Lodge, was comfortable. Fresh milk in the fridge. And it is pretty good value for money. And if you don’t get served there’s always the pub next door.

We stayed here for 1 night while walking in the Peak District. We were struggling to find somewhere that would take a 1 night booking at the weekend and came across Biggin Hall by chance. And what a lucky encounter. Beautiful old building; large and very comfortable bedroom in the main house; real milk in a milk bottle in every room for tea etc.. Quirky layout but lovely. And really tasty, good value evening meal too. We hope to visit again.

Our first visit - stayed in one of their courtyard rooms recently for 2 nights. Very nice indeed and excellent value for money. Our room was spacious and well appointed. The food was tiptop, service very attentive and friendly. The only thing missing was that it would have been nice if the hotel manager or owner had put in an appearance, even if only briefly. We will definitely visit again

Room Tip: The courtyard rooms are more modern than in the main hotel and only a skip and a jump away
