Description: The village of Holmbury St Mary lays high in the Surrey Hills. The glorious countryside with far-reaching views is a popular location for walkers, ramblers, cyclists and mountain-bikers. The Royal Oak was originally a cottage, built in about the 1730s. The triangular green onto which it looks out, along with the church perched nearby on a slope with pine trees behind and houses dotted around, gives the impression that things haven't changed for centuries. Re-opened on the 1st August 2016, after a mindful refurbishment, bringing it's former customary warmth back to life, the traditional bar area, with oak beams, fireplace and stonework lead you through to another level with a fresh perspective to this delightful village pub. Belinda and her team look forward to meeting villagers and visitors alike to share, identify and explore the areas of support they can contribute to, and be part of.

Booked a lunch for 10 to 20 cyclists, but eventually we were 25 arriving at the Royal Oak having travelled from Cobham and climbed a number of hills on the way. As we had pre-ordered 18 lunches out of the 25 needed at 11:30 on that day, the service from our arrival at 13:00 was very good and rather prompt, with no compromise on the quality. Sandwiches were served with either salad or chips, the latter being fresh and delicious. The quality of the food is far superior to the average pub fare and was enjoyed by all. My crayfish sandwich was delicious and partnered with a tasty herby salad. A good selection of beer was on offer, including my husband's favourite, Doombar.
We shall come back to try the interesting dishes on the menu as the one hour cycling-break we take does not allow enough time to appreciate them.

Called in yesterday for a snack. I had roast beef baguette and excellent hand made chips, with the skin left on. Delicious, as was the guest beer. Very friendly and a little dog like a teddy bear.

15 of us came here yesterday for lunch following a walk in this lovely area. Good, varied menu and everyone was very pleased with their choices (sea bass, roasts, liver, game pie; crumble, sticky toffee pud, creme brulee all top notch). Only thing for me personally that could be improved on was veg - I'm all for "al dente", but mine needed just a bit more cooking and I'd have liked a bigger portion - but that is a minor niggle. Our main course was served promptly (not easy for a walking group whose arrival time can't be specified exactly) and the friendly staff were very attentive to us in the upstairs room where the patio doors opened out onto the back garden. So, although we were in a separate room from other diners, we still enjoyed the ambience of the pub and folks eating outside. All in all, definitely recommended.

The rambling group I and my wife are members of have returned to this pub every year for the past 4 years. It location is in the small village of Holmbury St Mary near Dorking Surrey. Today i enjoyed a starter of pigeon breasts followed by Sea Bass and fruit crumble and can honestly say that the quality of food was superb. The cost was £21 for 3 courses. Cost of beer is average for tits location around £3.50 a pint. Service was efficient. None of the party i was with grumbled. We will return.
