Banff Gate Mountain Resort
Reviewed 17 October 2010

We have been coming to this resort for many years. In the past few years it has improved considerably. The public areas have been updated -- the gym and pool area are now modern and very comfortable for family use. The cabins amenities have also been updated, including wireless internet. The games room is still tired, but is scheduled for improvement. At the end of the day, it's all about the location and the view. Both are spectacular. If you want to see Canadian grizzly, elk, deer, coyotes, etc. -- this is the place for you. You just can't get the same feeling of the Rockies by staying in the Towns of Banff or Canmore. By car everything you might need is minutes away, but it feels like you don't have to see anyone if you don't want to.

We loved the A-frame cabins - they were different from anywhere we have stayed before. The cabins are well appointed with everything you need and are well heated. The staff were very friendly and helpful (e.g. told to drive on Highway 1A, instead of the major freeway from Banff to Lake Louise, as this road has many chances of animal encounters. We saw Long Horned Sheep, black bears, Elk, deer and Bald Eagles).
In the grounds of the resort we were lucky enough to see a grizzly bear as well as numerous deer. Loved it! Canmore has some great eateries: don't miss the Iron Gate Hotel with breathtaking views. Try the maple syrup wings. Yummy!!
One warning: be aware that you are NOT in the National Park and it will cost you $10 each time you go north to Banff and beyond. I must say. well worth it!!

reading the past reviews we were concerned about the resort as they range from excellent to terrible. In general we agree with them. Th ;setting is fantastic and right in the hiking and walking areas but the rooms are shabby/dirty, the gym equipmentis broken and the staff half-hearted. There are no facilities (restaurants or ANYTHING but a quaryy nearby so you need to drive everywhere (or just walk into the hills!!!). Overall its OK but if you do stay in room check out whether the "clean me" written in dust on the bedside cabinet is still there.

the resort is not new but the chalet are sort of "cute" with lots of space . However, the toilet upstairs did not work, it was dirty ( dry food on dishes, clipped toenails on the floor, duvet covered dirty ...) and when taking a shower , water was leaking downstairs into the kitchen. the toilet was fixed the next day , but the rest did not seem to matter to the manager who remained invisible , we were staying in a time share and rci was able to find us another resort for the rest of the week.
the spot is otherwise great away from it all but you have to enjoy the wilderness and a car is needed

Five of us friends stayed at the resort on a time share in mid June and loved it. The chalet was an A-frame with a master suite, guest bedroom and pullout in the living room. All were very comfortable. The chalet was very clean and the management was very accomadating.
We spent every evening out on the deck which had a sunset view of the snowcovered mountains. The evenings were cool, so, even in June we enjoyed the gas fireplace. The kitchen met all of our needs. Our location was close to everything which made our daytrips enjoyable. We visited Canmore, Lake Louise, the Columbia Icefields, etc. Loved the hikes and most of all the views and friends I shared it with.

This resort is wonderful if you, like us, enjoy quiet places with a wonderful view and lots of wildlife, as well as a full kitchen so you can cook some of your own meals. We came here to enjoy the outdoors, and this resort fell right in line with our expectations. No, there are no restaurants or shops in walking distance. It is 8 km from Canmore, but that's only a 10 minute's drive, and about 20 minutes from the park. We had two chalets (42 and 43): one with a king-size bed and two twin beds, and one with two queen beds. Each had a pull out sofa in the living room. We loved having so much room. They were both recently renovated, though I understand that not all the units have been updated. The chalets were clean, with the exception of the windows. They were extremely well equipped in terms of dishes, cookware, tissues, paper towels, and towels. The microwave was new. We did pay $10 for internet in one of the Chalets, and it was well worth the nominal fee, as was the $5 gas grill charge (which pays for the propane). The outdoor hot tub was nice, though a fence around it (probably to keep bears out) blocks the view of the mountain. The jets on the indoor hot tub were not as powerful, so we did not use it. The children in our group loved the pool. Perhaps a complaint would be that the only television was in the living room, so my husband and I had to compromise with my parents when we wanted to quietly enjoy the view and they wanted to watch the news, but that was a small inconvenience. The staff were very helpful with recommendations for horseback riding and other activities.
