Tirril Farm Cottages
Reviewed 10 April 2013

We were a party of eight adults staying in the Granary and Dairy cottages for four nights. The owner was friendly and happy to move a few things around so we could all sit together to eat in one of the cottages as well as making sure there were enough sofas/chairs for all of us to sit in the evening. On arriving we were shown around and found a homemade cake, tea coffee, sugar and milk in each of the cottages which immediately made us feel welcome. The cottages were very clean, cosy, quiet and comfortable as well as being well situated. The Granary was the larger of the two cottages and probably a little more comfortable although the disabled facilities in the Dairy were needed someone in our party. We would definitely recommend Tirril Farm cottages and are planning to stay again in the near future.

We stayed here with my mom who was visiting us from South Africa. We were looking for a self-catering place in the Lake District and Tirril Cottages, being a five minute drive from Ullswater Lake, was perfect! We were greeted warmly and showed around our apartment by the friendly owner. The apartment was immaculate and everything worked perfectly. The kitchen was extremely well stocked - with even minor things like clingwrap, foil, coffee, tea, milk in the fridge, salt, pepper, etc. all provided. We were able to make a hot cuppa the moment we walked in the door which was great after a long drive (from Cork, Ireland!!) Another nice touch was the guestbook which was left in the sitting room - what greater sign of honesty and good service could you ask for? In summary, a magic place that we will definitely stay at again!! THANK YOU!!

Room Tip: All the rooms are lovely but if possible go for "The Granary" which has strong WIFI access...

Tirril Farm Cottages are a lovely collection of properties in the quiet village of Tirril. We stayed in the largest of the cottages, Blencathra. We were a party of 8 adults visiting the Lake District for a wedding at nearby Lake Ullswater. The cottage was plenty big enough. The rooms were clean and spacious, all towels and bedding was provided and the kitchen was well stocked with all crockery, cutlery and cookware. There is also a dishwasher and washing machine.

One thing to be aware of if visiting with children is that this cottage is a kind of 'upside down' layout. Meaning that the lounge/dining/kitchen is all on the upper level. There is also a double bedroom and a bathroom. The other 3 bedrooms, one with en-suite, and another shower room are all on the lower floor. I would have been a little concerned about the stairs if I had my children with me and it may be worth taking a travel stair gate with you if you have little ones. There is also not a great deal of outside space for little ones. There is a courtyard with garden furniture, which was more than adequate for a party of adults. But if we had children with us it may have been a little more difficult as the courtyard is adjacent to a carpark where vehicles can drive past. Just worth bearing in mind if booking with children. To be honest though, the Lake District is so beautiful and there is so much to do that you are unlikely to spend much time at the cottage anyway.

The village itself is quiet and peaceful. There is a local shop, garage and pub. The pub, The Queens Head, serves fantastic food, the staff could not do enough to help us, and much to my husband's delight they had a tv which showed the football!! There are plenty of other facilities, supermarkets, shops, banks etc in nearby Penrith, which was just a 10 miniute drive away.

All in all we really enjoyed our time at Tirril Farm and would definately recommend.

We were a party of 8 adults and 2 young kids. The cottage has 4 bedrooms one with an ensuite bathroom, and there are 2 more bathrooms. The lounge, kitchen and diner are all open space an is very very roomy. All utensils are provided in the kitchen, which also has a dishwasher! The place was very clean, very tidy and in very good condition. Lake Ullswater is literally 5 mins drive from the cottage.
