“Fantastic”
Reviewed 5 November 2013

The food was brilliant and it was a very welcoming place to stay. They were kind and extremely helpful. We had a fantastic time there and would happy go back in the future. I enjoyed every aspect of the inn especially the pool table! After a day out in the rain it was fantastic to go back into the inn and sit by the warm fire.

Just visited this lovely pub on a very rainy evening. We are a family of 5, including 2 boys 10 yrs and 11 yrs and our daughter who is 22 months old. The landlord was very hospitable and welcoming. All the staff were very polite. In my opinion the food was of a high standard i.e. the chips hand cut with skin on. All our meals were tasty and my husband was very happy with the choice of ale. This is a very lovely village pub which is well worth a visit.

We stayed for one night on our UK adventure with three kids aged 6-11.
We had a two bedroom family room which was plenty big enough with a nice hot shower.
The kids loved meeting Oscar the dog, and we had a fantastic meal in the bar with a nice local cold beer.
Great value for money with comfy beds and good food.
(Visit the potter across the road as well, he has some fantastic teapots and is only to happy to talk and show.)

Having driven for 7 hours, being told that I'm double booked is not what you want to hear, was 'allowed' to stay fri night , (thanks for that...) , and that they'd arranged a room for me in the village for the following night, to be sorted in the morning, bit light on details, but hey, I was tired just wanted a beer then bed, off to room I toddled, freezing cold, turned on radiator, down to the bar, then back up to room, still cold, great, found an electric heater uh he'd it in and heated the six square inches of fresh air surrounding it, ace..

Next morning, had shower, hot, yay, then attempted to shave in lovely Ice'y water, one kettle full later, headed off for breakfast, which was ok.

Next hurdle was trying to find out where I'm staying that night, wandering around empty pub eventually cleaner took pity on me and tried her best to sort me out, and 30 mins later I'm heading off in my car with the cook navigating for me (good lad) to new digs, nobody home, doh! Back to queens head hung around for a while then tried again.

What can I say, sawmill cottage B&B was brill welcoming, cosy, and flexible, proper old school, not out there to make money, but to provide somewhere nice to stay, and half the price of the queens head.

I get the immpresion that this happens regularly , double bookings, poor admin?or ship out the single travellers for a better paying double booking?.. who knows, but it's a fundamental customer service fail, I'd booked over a month in advance through there own website, paid deposit, they had my phone number and email address but chose not to contact me , am I right in thinking that that's just rude? Perhaps I'm old fashioned ...

Anyway, if you are going to stay there, and I'm sure plenty of people have trouble free stays there, RING THEM BEFORE YOU LEAVE YOUR HOUSE!! check your booking, it'll save a nasty surprise after you spent half the day parked on the M6.

Ps, Askham is very pretty place, location is spot on despite, rain and gales, it's breathtaking scenery will blow your boots off :-)

A warm welcome, very dog friendly. Lovely room. Fantastic home cooked food and great value for money.
Both my husband, myself and our two Labradors had a very relaxing stay here. Nicely situated for walks and sightseeing.
It is what you expect from a traditional pub, cosy and quaint, staff and locals very welcoming.

Great welcome, warm and friendly atmosphere, good facilities and great food. A traditional country pub which caters for everyone in the family.Staff could not do any more to make the visit more enjoyable. Well located also within small village with easy acces to walks and Askham Fell.

Highly recommended and will definitely be going back.

Great old village pub - everything you'd want from a 17th Century pub - low ceilings, old beams, old photos and memorabilia, good ale (2 or 3 on) and fine food.

Rooms are a little small for putting much stuff in, but of course constrained by the age of the building. Comfortable bed, nice strong shower.

Food was good (had a great curry), but the pub is popular so you may have to wait a little for a table - worth the wait.

Friendly service from the owners and their staff.

We will be back.
