“Good hotel”
Reviewed 8 May 2013

Stayed at this hotel as I have to attend an event at the Richmond Olympic Oval. Location of hotel was good as it was out of the traffic area. There were some decent restaurants and fast food places close by.

I stayed at this hotel this past weekend and found it quite acceptable. Just make sure if you book in that you confirm your registration just to be safe of any misplaced request. Good Location especially if you want direct access on good driving routes in and out of Vancouver proper. Great kick off spot to locate what every you need.
This area is a little tricky to get back to when you are returning from town so get a good map and understand the road access back to this location. Getting out to Vancouver is easy, just a little confusing when returning.

Room Tip: All rooms are quite good and the view is what ever you prefer.

very close to the airport. Perfect for a quick overlay before your flight great if you're arriving the night before .many restaurants nearby. The price was actually less than most other nearby hotels.

I have stayed here weekly for over ten years. While any hotel is made up of furniture etc, the excellent part of the Sandman is the STAFF. They provide a cheerful experience despite the many problems they must face during a work day. They have gone beyond their duties to provide excellent service.

We stayed in a loft suite for 3 nights in March. The price was cheap which was what I was looking for, trying to be frugal for this particular trip. The kids loved the room configuration, however, the pull-out sofa was situated such that you had to literally climb over it to get to the bathroom and the blanket on it had several tears. The King bed in the loft was comfortable.
It was convenient having a microwave and fridge in the room. A Tim Hortons, Dollarama, and Michaels are across the street and Costco is within walking distance.
The rooms definitely need updating. There were chips on the corners of the table, repatched wall paper and dirty grout from age on the walls of the bathtub. Unfortunately we found a toe-nail clipping by the heater.....which stayed there until we left. To be fair, the room was only cleaned once during our stay as we accidently left the do not disturb sign on the door one day but still, it was unfortunate. Since this is an older hotel, the sound of the freeway and roads below could still be heard even on the 5th floor. The walls are definitely NOT soundproof as I can attest to....the neighbours woke me up at 3:30 in the morning being amorous in a VERY loud way, not pleasant to say the least.......thankfully our children slept through the noise, though I am not sure how. I had to actually bang on the wall at one point. There are also apparently smoking rooms which you could smell in the hallways and the air freshener was not able to completely cover up. The morning that we were leaving, the toilet plugged and I had to let the front desk know upon departure to warn the cleaning staff.
We ate at Moxies one evening. The food was tasty but $75. was quite expensive for 1 adult and 2 children. (no alcohol).
The pool was great and enjoyed by all. We were lucky to have the use of it to ourselves each time.
The most positive experience there was the interaction with the Executive Housekeeper. Two articles were left behind and upon contacting the Housekeeping Department, they were shipped to us the very next day. Very much appreciated!
Would I stay in this hotel again....I would have to say no. Would I recommend it.....well, only as long as you know what you were getting into ahead of time, looking for a cheap rate and not spending much time in your room.

We stayed at the Sandman Hotel Vancouver Airport from March 10th to 15th while we were in the city to take our children to BC Children's Hospital. This hotel was chosen for us by an accommodation assistance program, so we were a little nervous. In the past, we have stayed at the Sandman Signature just down the street, and haven't heard the greatest things about this hotel. I am happy to report that we were pleasantly surprised! The 5th floor room was clean and nicely furnished with a kitchenette, small table, desk, sofa-bed and a loft bedroom. The separate bedroom proved to be extremely useful at bedtime, as we could easily put the kids to bed upstairs and then continue on with our evening. The king bed upstairs was very comfortable, but my husband wasn't thrilled with the comfort of the pull-out sofa. The staff were lovely and extremely helpful, and Moxies was a great place to have dinner with the kids (although we would have loved to have been able to check out the lounge and have a few drinks!). Our meals were reasonably priced and our kids loved the smoking dessert! :)
I think we were most impressed with the swimming pool. This is probably the first hotel we have ever stayed at that keeps the swimming pool and hot tub at the perfect temperature. The pool area was always clean and relatively quiet, and having this amenity was essential for our family during this trip. We used the pool and hot tub twice a day, every day. The kids loved it - and we were relieved to have something to keep them busy in the rainy weather. My husband used the fitness center a couple of times too, and thought the equipment was pretty decent compared to other places we have stayed.
In the past, we have avoided staying in Richmond because it seemed so out of the way, but we were wrong! The trip to Children's Hospital was about 15 minutes during rush hour, and getting into Vancouver was surprisingly quick and easy as well. We checked out some of the shopping areas nearby, and found Richmond easy to navigate and fun to explore. Be sure to check out some of the shopping plazas that cater to Richmond's large Chinese population. It makes for some fun outings and some interesting dining experiences.
Overall, the Sandman is well situated - whether you need to be close the airport, the ferry terminal, or BC Children's Hospital. It's also a great consideration if you're simply hoping to check out the Greater Vancouver area. We will definitely stay here again!
