Best Western Pocaterra Inn
Ranked #5 of 28 Hotels in Canmore
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 10 July 2011

My wife & I booked in to the Pocaterra Inn (Best Western) in Canmore for the first three nights of our fourteen day tour of the Rocky Mountains. The hotel is very conveniently situated on Mountain Avenue on the edge of Canmore with very convenient access to the Trans Canadian Highway 1 and is just a 20 minute drive to Banff.

The hotel staff were tremendous especially Julie and Candace on Reception. On our arrival we booked into our mountain view bedroom but were slightly disappointed that we didn’t have a balcony, (although our allocated room was very spacious and comfortable). However the following morning when we met Julie (Assistant Manger) she quickly explained to us that as Best Western Loyalty Card holders we were entitled to an upgrade if one was available. Luckily one was and Julie very kindly helped us move our belongings up to the top floor where we had an even bigger and better room with great views looking out towards the Three Sisters Mountain. The following day we encountered a problem with our hire car and would like to thank Candace, who immediately took it upon herself to contact the hire company and help us sort out the problem. Our three nights stay at the Pocaterra Inn were fantastic and both Julie and Candace are a great asset to their hotel and should be highly commended for their very professional manner.

We found all the hotel staff very friendly and courteous and our room was very clean and comfortable, with fantastic views of the mountains and there was a good selection of hot and cold food available in the breakfast room each day.

We would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to stay in Canmore or visiting Banff and the surrounding area.

Room Tip: Request a room with a balcony overlooking the Three Sisters Mountains

Hotel is clean and everything works. Very convenient location if you're driving. Reception staff is friendly and helpful. Lowest marks are for breakfast - staff look and act like you're intruding on them; and food is bland. But hey, it's "free".
Overall, a good place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with fireplace.

Travelling through and this hotel was perfect in everyway. Fireplace in room, ice tea and cookies in lobby, clean, large and wonderful. We have a very large dog and for a small fee he too could stay. Would recommend this hotel to anyone, lovely stay and beautiful view of the mountains.

This hotel truly surprised us. We were expecting just a standard basic hotel but when we got to our room it was really lovely. It had a fireplace with a lovely view of the mountains. Two queen size beds, a labtop table, microwave, mini fridge and a large bathroom. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel was relatively quiet as far as hotels go and we had a wonderful sleep. In the morning we went for continental breakfast expecting your typical cold cereals and muffins. What a wonderful surprise to find make your own waffles, French toast, pancakes, make your own McMuffin, plus all the regular cereals, muffins, toast and fruit. It had a great pool with really fun waterslide. The Pocaterra was a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Higher floor room, better view of the mountains

We stayed for 2 nights with some friends visiting from USA. The hotel staff was pleasant, and check-in was smooth. The rooms were fine, but not fancy. Very clean, and well stocked.
Although we enjoyed our stay, there was room for improvement. We chose this hotel partly due to the pool/waterslide. We were disappointed that the pool area closed at 10 pm, no exceptions, every night. We found this too early...after a day on the hills, then grab some dinner, we found it was almost 9pm (especially on a weekend when there is a wait for restaurants) before we could enjoy the pool. We definitely all felt that the time should have been extended, at least for the weekends. More seating around the pool area would also be a plus.
The second small disappointment was the lack on activity in the evenings. We were there on vacation, weren't allowed to use the pool after 10...and no lounge, no entertainment, nothing. It would be great to have some all-ages entertainment, such as live music etc to enjoy at the end of the day. The teens were bored, and resorted to walking to Tim Hortons for something to do...other teens in the hotel rode the elevator for fun.
The breakfast room is great. The food is plentiful, and the selection quite good. This adds value for sure, and saves time/money.
We enjoyed our stay, and would possibly stay again as a family, but not with out of country guests. We would choose somewhere with more to offer in the evenings.

I stay in a lot of average chain hotels and sometimes the best western can be disapointing. I would rate this Best Western abover average because of the friendly staff and clean rooms.
