“Great place to stay while visiting Banff National Park”
Reviewed 14 January 2014

I stayed one night in the Falcon Crest Lodge in Canmore Alberta, during a day-trip to the Rockies from Calgary.

CALGARY – CANMORE – BANFF
To start, I think it would make sense to explain these three places to those readers who may not be familiar with the area, since some people may be confused by the proximity of one place compared to another.
CALGARY: is a major city in Alberta with a major airport and a wide variety of hotels, restaurants and attractions, like you might expect to find in any major city in North America. To reach the Rockies from Calgary will take approximately 1 hour.
CANMORE: is a town, essentially at the entrance to the Rockies; it is the last town before entering Banff National Park. Canmore has hotels/motels, restaurants, etc. It is approximately 1 hour from Calgary (as mentioned previously).
BANFF: is a town located within Banff National Park, just beyond the park entrance (note: a park entry fee is charged per person). Banff is a tourist town, with hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops, etc. Banff is approximately 15-20 mins from Canmore, and about 1.5 hours from Calgary.

OVERALL LODGE: To me, the term “lodge” makes me think of a quaint rustic building nestled in the forest or mountains. While it may seem appropriate given that this lodge is in the Rockies, it is slightly misleading when it comes to the Falcon Crest Lodge. The Falcon Crest Lodge is a modern, multi-storey building, with hotel style rooms/suites. There isn’t much of a property surrounding the building, as it is mostly parking (underground parking is also available). There are other neighbouring buildings on properties surrounding Falcon Crest Lodge, except for the west side which has a clear, unobstructed view of the mountains. The lodge has two hot tubs (no pool) and a fitness area.

ROOM: I booked a “Deluxe Room”, but upon arriving I was upgraded to a “One Bedroom Suite” free of charge. The suite was on the main floor, facing the parking lot. We arrived late after spending all day visiting the sites in Banff Park, so the view out the window was irrelevant by the time we checked in. The suite was spacious and had a full kitchen with a stove, fridge, dishwasher, and sink. Just off the kitchen is the living room, which had a flat screen TV, fireplace, pull-out couch, table, etc. The large bathroom had a soaker tub, a shower, and laundry machines (behind doors). The bedroom had a comfortable queen sized bed and a flat screen TV. The suite was very clean when we arrived and had everything we needed. Although we were only there for the night, we could see how this space could easily work for a long stay (a week or more) and would be appropriate for a family.

SERVICE: The service was excellent; every interaction I had with staff members was pleasant, including the initial booking, calling from the road to inform them of our late arrival, check-in/check-out, etc. The staff were well trained and friendly.

LOCATION: As I mentioned in the beginning, the lodge is located in the town of Canmore (NOT Banff). There isn’t much around the lodge itself, in terms of restaurants and attractions. Basically, the lodge serves as a place to rest and relax between various outings in Banff Park. In general, Canmore accommodations tend to be less than in Banff (but not in all cases).

In conclusion, the Falcon Crest Lodge is a great place to stay while visiting Banff National Park and the Rockies. It’s just outside the park and about an hour from Lake Louise. The accommodations at the lodge are comfortable, clean, spacious, and affordable. They have everything you’d need for a long stay for you and your family. The lodge offers a price-match guarantee when booking directly with the lodge, so check with them before booking.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on the main floor as the view will be limited. A room facing the mountains on the west...

We have stayed at Falcon Crest Lodge several times and as always our recent stay was a wonderful experience. Check in was quick. Staff were very friendly and went out of their way to ensure we had an enjoyable stay. Our one bedroom suite was very spacious and clean with lots of natural light. Cooking our Christmas meal was easy thanks to the large kitchen counter space. Great accommodations.

Comfortable, cozy and homey. The one bedroom suite with a beautiful mountain vista had everything one could need to enjoy a peaceful and romantic 4 day anniversary holiday. The bottle of wine and local "Grizzly Paw" chocolates were an unexpected, delightful, and appreciated surprise. Hands down the best thing about this place is the staff. Outstanding! The gals at the front desk (sorry... and gentleman) went above and beyond in trying to make our stay the best possible. They were warm and accommodating, answering our multitude of questions with patience and offering to seek information beyond what they had (ie - corkage at restaurants). We even found extra brochures slid under our suite door in the evening.

One thing we found both amusing and frustrating, was I'm pretty sure the temperature controls are there to placate the guests and give them the impression that they have the ability to control the temperature in their suite. We had our temperature set to between 20-22 at all times, and the only time the temperature dropped below 23 was after the balcony door had been open for at least an hour. (During -15 to +6)That was without the fireplace on. We think we're pretty hotstuff sometimes, but really?? Lol!

Another thing to note was that after using the hot tub one afternoon for about 20 minutes (we have a hot tub at home that we use almost daily) both my friend and I didn't feel very well. Quite nauseous. And while in the hot tub we found the chlorine to be very, very strong. It's a Catch 22 in a public hot tub... however...experiencing what I had, I would still choose to use it, as it was a wonderful experience when the big beautiful snowflakes were falling heavily on our faces and we were absorbed in the warmth of the water.

We love the location of this hotel. We walked downtown a few times and to restaurants beyond and it was lovely walking on well trodden bike baths, sometimes through trees, but always safely and (while not always well lit) easy to get around. It was about a 20 minute walk to downtown. The spa across the street is also outstanding. (refer to my other review)

All in all, we had a wonderful time and would certainly consider staying here again.

Myself and a few girlfriends recently stayed at Falcon Crest Lodge for one night while we were in Canmore for a spa getaway. The front desk staff were so accomodating and helpful. They helped with dinner reservations and a cab. Very friendly. The room was nice (king suite) and it had everything you would ever need. Would stay here again. Only a few minutes drive to downtown and a majority of what Canmore has to offer.

We stayed only one night, enticed by the great rate, and were very happy with our choice -- a clean, comfortable room with full kitchen facilities, cosy fireplace, very helpful front desk staff. And the underground parking is a real convenience. We've tried many places in Canmore; this is one of the best.

Room Tip: If you have a family and intend to eat in, ask for a bigger room with a larger table.

We just returned from celebrating Christmas with our family of 3 married children with their children in 2 - 2 bedroom suites at Falcon Crest. The service from reservations through to checkout was excellent and the suites were very clean and well stocked on arrival. We have absolutely no complaints on our experience with Falcon Crest.
