I stayed one night in the Falcon Crest Lodge in Canmore Alberta, during a day-trip to the Rockies from Calgary.
CALGARY – CANMORE – BANFF
To start, I think it would make sense to explain these three places to those readers who may not be familiar with the area, since some people may be confused by the proximity of one place compared to another.
CALGARY: is a major city in Alberta with a major airport and a wide variety of hotels, restaurants and attractions, like you might expect to find in any major city in North America. To reach the Rockies from Calgary will take approximately 1 hour.
CANMORE: is a town, essentially at the entrance to the Rockies; it is the last town before entering Banff National Park. Canmore has hotels/motels, restaurants, etc. It is approximately 1 hour from Calgary (as mentioned previously).
BANFF: is a town located within Banff National Park, just beyond the park entrance (note: a park entry fee is charged per person). Banff is a tourist town, with hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops, etc. Banff is approximately 15-20 mins from Canmore, and about 1.5 hours from Calgary.
OVERALL LODGE: To me, the term “lodge” makes me think of a quaint rustic building nestled in the forest or mountains. While it may seem appropriate given that this lodge is in the Rockies, it is slightly misleading when it comes to the Falcon Crest Lodge. The Falcon Crest Lodge is a modern, multi-storey building, with hotel style rooms/suites. There isn’t much of a property surrounding the building, as it is mostly parking (underground parking is also available). There are other neighbouring buildings on properties surrounding Falcon Crest Lodge, except for the west side which has a clear, unobstructed view of the mountains. The lodge has two hot tubs (no pool) and a fitness area.
ROOM: I booked a “Deluxe Room”, but upon arriving I was upgraded to a “One Bedroom Suite” free of charge. The suite was on the main floor, facing the parking lot. We arrived late after spending all day visiting the sites in Banff Park, so the view out the window was irrelevant by the time we checked in. The suite was spacious and had a full kitchen with a stove, fridge, dishwasher, and sink. Just off the kitchen is the living room, which had a flat screen TV, fireplace, pull-out couch, table, etc. The large bathroom had a soaker tub, a shower, and laundry machines (behind doors). The bedroom had a comfortable queen sized bed and a flat screen TV. The suite was very clean when we arrived and had everything we needed. Although we were only there for the night, we could see how this space could easily work for a long stay (a week or more) and would be appropriate for a family.
SERVICE: The service was excellent; every interaction I had with staff members was pleasant, including the initial booking, calling from the road to inform them of our late arrival, check-in/check-out, etc. The staff were well trained and friendly.
LOCATION: As I mentioned in the beginning, the lodge is located in the town of Canmore (NOT Banff). There isn’t much around the lodge itself, in terms of restaurants and attractions. Basically, the lodge serves as a place to rest and relax between various outings in Banff Park. In general, Canmore accommodations tend to be less than in Banff (but not in all cases).
In conclusion, the Falcon Crest Lodge is a great place to stay while visiting Banff National Park and the Rockies. It’s just outside the park and about an hour from Lake Louise. The accommodations at the lodge are comfortable, clean, spacious, and affordable. They have everything you’d need for a long stay for you and your family. The lodge offers a price-match guarantee when booking directly with the lodge, so check with them before booking.
