I've been hiking out here a couple times a year for the past few years (with the exception of this summer). It's a great hike in summer or winter and I always walk on the creekbed. I suggest hiking boots because of the rocky terrain but they are not necessary for the summer. In the winter, ice cleats are a must or if you want to do some ice climbing at the falls, just wear your crampons!! I've ice climbed there in the winter and it is a great place to spend the day. I've gone slab climbing in the summer further down past the falls and that is a good time too. If you visit in winter or summer you will more than likely encounter climbers. There are some pictographs along the way in the canyon so keep an eye out for them, but please do not touch them!! I highly recommend this hike as it really isn't that challenging in any season.

Having walked several canyon areas in this area, this was the first hike along the base of the canyon rather than around the lip. Due to the recent floods in this area there is quite a bit of scrambling over rocks and debris, but it's not a difficult hike.
Some clear rock paintings can be found on one of the rock faces - visible history of this area.
This is an area where I wouldn't recommend a lone walker to explore, however, and carrying bear spray is probably a good idea. Though I didn't see any animals, bears and even cougars are known to be in this area.

Our last hike to Grotto was about 5 years ago when the children were much younger. Now that they are young adults, we wanted to take them back as they had so much fun playing along side the stream when we first went. But this time, after the flood, you can see the damage done to the canyon. The trails alongside the canyon were mostly destroyed although one could pick up the trail in between walking on the rocks. The rock terrain was not overly difficult but cumbersome and takes time/agility. So if you have any physical impediment, best not to go. We reached the end of the canyon to where there used to be a waterfall but now, it is just dried up. But it is scenic and interesting nevertheless and we enjoyed it.

This was a perfect first hike in Canmore, we left early morning to beat the rush and climbed up the creekbed. Follow the marked trails, but if the creek is not rushing or dry, its well worth it to climb down off the trail into the creek. There was only a small bit of water while we were there and it wasn't very slippery going up, so very doable! There are stunning views from within the creek as you look up the canyon. There are pictographs along the canyon, but most of us missed them beacuse they are not very visable unless you are really looking. It took us under 2 hours to climb to the waterfall and beyond. There were also many families along the way with kids young and old. It was a great hike!

Peaceful before other hikers arrive; go in the morning, no one seems to get up early here!

The only thing detracting from the walk at the beginning and end is the hum of the nearby precious metals plant located nearby- can't do anything about that! But, be advised in advance to manage expectations.
