During a recent extended road trip, my cousin and I ended up selecting Parry Sound and the 40 Street B&B for a two night rest stop largely because Susan, the owner, was so unbelievably helpful to us during the trip planning stages. We couldn’t have made a better choice. Susan didn’t just answer questions and accommodate our preferences and schedule changes, but was also a fountain of information about the town and the area. Her suggestions and recommendations were invaluable; thanks to her, our stay in Parry Sound ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. Susan’s house is light, airy, and pristine, with big windows and up-to-date bathrooms. She has managed to completely avoid the heavy and fusty Victorian décor (and the tricky plumbing!) of so many B&Bs. Her semi-wild garden is an attractive haven (especially if you are staying in the Garden Room), and her breakfasts are 5-star. There are lots of nice touches everywhere to make your stay more pleasant and comfortable, from the excellent pillows to the corkscrew and wine glasses by the small guest fridge upstairs. As to location, the only drawback we could see was a nearby overhead train track, but that turned out to be a very minor annoyance that was easy to ignore. Otherwise, the B&B’s siting couldn’t be better: Across the street from the picturesque Parry Sound harbor (try the sunset dinner cruise!), with a couple of inviting restaurants practically next door (great outside seating, great food), within easy reach of picturesque walking trails and downtown, and with plenty of parking on the street or by the harbor. But the best part of our experience was the sense of unreserved welcome that Susan extends to all her guests; she is one of those rare people who can make you feel at home without crowding you or intruding on your privacy. She has the gift of listening and an interest in discovering your likes and dislikes, so her service, advice and suggestions are practically tailor-made for you, while her easy friendliness takes all awkwardness out of your interactions with her and with the other guests. Thank you very much for a memorable visit, Susan, and keep up the good work!
