“Best spot in town - the reviews are true!”
Reviewed 24 November 2013

Had my first dining experience at Public this past weekend and it was outstanding, start to stop. Love the ambiance - nothing pretentious, nothing shabby. It's a funky blend of eclectic and modern, with simple accessories. Whatever you call, it looks (and works) great! We were a group of seven and were seated in the back of the restaurant. It's the kind of noisy that creates a wonderful energy and synergy for the dining experience. We seven decided to chip in and share so we could try as much as possible - this approach worked well. Our night consisted of eight fantastic tapas plates: pork/duck pate (which was sensational), smoked salmon on rosti, crostini of Serrano ham and warm pork belly (one of my faves), east coast mussels, carmelized mushroom costini with goat cheese (another of my faves), deep fried Frulano cheese with caramelized Ambrosia apples, patatas bravas (yet another fave) and Digby Bay scallops (wow!). ALL of it was outstanding. Our server Johnny and bartender Ryan were fantastic... they are some of the most skilled servers I've come across (ask Ryan about his paperclip and pushpin!). Too, the restaurant has a pretty robust wine selection to go with their amazing food. This is, by far, the best meal I've had in K-W, hands down. This little spot deserves the kudos it is getting, and then some. I almost hate to do a review because I know it's going to mean more folks finding and enjoying it... thus a harder time for me to get reservations! If you've not been to Public yet and are wondering whether or not you should go, I say, "what are you waiting for?" GO. You will have a superb meal (especially if you're going on Friday or Saturday night for the tapas), great vino, and wonderful atmosphere and service. They've got my repeat (and repeat and repeat) business. Look forward to returning!

“At Long Last, A Great Dining Adventure in K-W”
Reviewed 23 November 2013

Our first time at Public and the dining experience exceeded all expectations. If creativity and serendipity turn you on, you should try this place. After too many years of mediocre restaurant food in K-W, we can truly say this meal was incredible. We made reservations to return before the meal was even over!
The choice of tapas was extensive and there was not one on the menu that did not sound appealing. We chose 7 savory small plates and they were all delicious and beautifully presented. These tapas were a visual work of art and tasted as good as they looked. The smoked salmon on rosti, mushroom crostini, digby bay scallops, serrano ham & pork belly, duck & pork pates were all incredibly flavorful and garnished with greens for bit of veggie goodness on the plate. Chorizo lamb meatballs and fried cheese were both good but would not make the cut next time. We even found room for dessert - donuts & crepes. Stuffed and very satisfied!
We found the small restaurant cozy and comfortable, with lovely decorative touches - like eating in a friend's home. The service was prompt and friendly. A nice wine selection, with special bin lot offerings. We had early evening reservations and did not feel rushed over our 2 hour feast. We hope our next time there will be just as memorable. We might wish we kept this place a secret...

“Believe the Reviews!”
Reviewed 10 November 2013

Dined at Public after reading the review in the Waterloo Region Record. Public exceeded the review. Four of us enjoyed 8 wonderfully prepared shared dishes that were well prepared and tasty. Our server (s) were friendly and attentive. We arrived early and enjoyed wine at the bar; a good selection of well priced wines.
Public is a small restaurant, but everyone in the place arrived with a smile, enjoyed their dining experience and left with a grin. Our party was not exception. All of us noted that we will be back.
Public exceeds the reviews; for a wonderful dining experience, friendly and knowledgeable service, and a cheery atmosphere - get yourself to Public!

“IT'S TRUE...fabulous!”
Reviewed 9 November 2013

I just returned from my first dining experience here and it's true, the food and atmosphere is superb. Now it's small and simply appointed but as we watched people arrive with a smile, dine with laughter and leave with a grin from ear-ear, it was clear that the genuinely friendly and helpful staff, the delicious food and wine, and the playlist was perfect for us (70's & 80's) all made for a great experience. Can't wait to return!

“Believe the hype!”
Reviewed 7 November 2013

I've heard lots of great things about Public and read some good reviews, and for once all the hype was for real! The food was fresh and delicious-we had at least 10 selections from the tapas menu and not one that disappointed. The service was equally stellar-friendly and knowledgeable; present when you needed them, and our waiter spaced out the serving of our food and wine selections properly. Top it all off with their great beer and wine list and you have a perfect night out! Then the bill came...another pleasant surprise! Thanks to their generous portion sizes and reasonable prices for both food and beverages, I felt that it was more than fair. Straight to the top of the list--can't wait to return!
