“Little things matter”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

We stayed in a one bedroom Summit Lodge room, which was very nicely renovated. It had a tv in the living room area and in the bedroom, and a kitchenette with a two burner stovetop and microwave. Unfortunately, the kitchen was sparse of utensils (no spatula so you get to wreck the frying pan having to use a fork), only one pot and frying pan, and no mixing bowl. Also, salt and pepper should be staples, but my husband had to go to several places to finally get some. The other negative to the room was the very large patio doors have not been replaced and were so heavy and sticky, it took every ounce of muscle power to open and close them. Now, the wifi. We had two teenage boys with us. You could get free wifi, or choose high speed wifi for $10 per night. So, given the boys and their tech toys, we paid for the wifi. Clearly, their definition of high speed and ours is not the same. It was excrutiatingly slow at times, and dropped signals frequently. If not for these issues, I would definitely be giving 4 stars, as it was otherwise a very enjoyable stay. The indoor pool is very nice (but no slide), the beach area is lovely, and water amenities were great. Paddle boarding is as peaceful as it looks and I was glad of the opportunity to try it!

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing the parking lot. We were on the ground floor. I don't think there ar...

Thank you for posting a review. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at our Lakeside Resort and had the chance try our new Stand Up Paddle Boards which seem to be one of the fastest growing recreational activities for the summer.

Our renovated Junior One Bedroom Suites feature a kitchenette with basic cooking supplies designed for easy / quick meals. Our Condo’s feature a full kitchen and a wider range of cook/bake ware for those who wish to prepare full meals in the privacy of their Condo and may be more suitable for you during another visit. Unfortunately the resort does not include ‘consumable items’ in the kitchen such as condiment’s, salt, pepper, paper towel etc.

We have upgraded our internet service in the last year so that all our guestrooms feature wireless internet and increased our bandwidth resort wide to meet our guests usages needs. We are sorry to read that you experienced an issue with connection and would like to investigate your concerns further. We would appreciate you contacting us at info@deerhurstresort.com and advise which room / dates you stayed with us.

We hope your travels bring you back to Muskoka soon– maybe this winter? The winter season offers an equally vibrant natural setting. We do recommend you set time aside to enjoy a dog sledding adventure or horse drawn sleigh ride, followed by our Live Decades Show in the evening!

Where do I start??? Charged the wrong amount before I even arrived, received 2 different rooms that I didn't book originally, confusing check-out bill, short-staffed on the splash zone resulting in closing it and not being able to use it even though paid for, needs updating like a bigger bathroom in the Bayside rooms, reservations are not on site so any problems you have you have to contact them not the front desk, one room received breakfast and dinner vouchers but the other room only received breakfast vouchers even though they were both booked and paid for in my name, given so many different stories about what things cost, what is valid and what isn't that I felt no one person really knew what was going on. Not going back ever.

Room Tip: Don't go by the website. I booked a room with a balcony and the room balcony was 1" deep a...

I stayed three days in the large condo. When I looked at first, it was so nice outside. However, it was not enough clean in the inside. Dish washer was operating, still remained a gabage bag, a lamp of livingroom didn't working(superintendent couldn't repaire it)..... Even though the resort had a good reputation by somebody, it was not for me.
I just had a satisfied thing which a manager, Lynsey, tried to solve my trobles with doing her best. It was only one thing, that's all.
I recommend that you, if you have a plan to visit, have to make a friend who is a higher level position guy such as G8 Summit or another powerful, rich person. And, you can be treated as a nice guest.

Room Tip: when it makes a reservation, choose a lake-view room.

We want you to know that each year we invest a considerable amount in capital property improvements, some of this investment is obvious to our guests, while others are not. Our priority the past year was to ensure over 300 guestrooms/condo’s received a partial or full renovation. We are currently in the process of mapping out a renovation plan for the remaining condos that we manage on behalf of private individual owners and are confident further renovations will be completed soon. In addition to improving our guestroom product, many amenities and services have been introduced around the property to meet our guest’s expectations and will continue into the new year. We are hopeful you will return so you can see and experience these changes first hand.

We went as a family, safe to say we were very disappointed. We were expecting a top-notch resort experience like what is advertised on their marketing, but instead got an outdated lodge which could really use major updates... By the way, the quality of service needs an equally large update too!

They do have alot of activities for the kids... but be prepared to pay big $$$ - Because nothing is included in the hefty room price! Everything needs advanced booking on old fashioned online reservation site (assuming there are availabilities):

Waterskiing? Book in advance and pay $50-100 per child for a few minutes on the water
ATV? $200 per person for 2 hours
Tree Zip Lining - $70 per person!
Jet-Skis aren't on the property and are super expensive too
Climbing wall (tiny by any climbing standard) costs extra
Horse Riding couldn't even find availability!

Oh, and don't try asking for small things like extra towels, because they will tell you that it's "one towel per towel card", and if you don't manage to return the towel, that's okay, they will just add an extra charge of $20/towel to your room!

This place could be fun if all you're expecting is an upgraded camping experience on the lake with canoes and kayaks, but if that's all you're looking for then why pay as if you're staying at a 5-star hotel!

This was our last time here!

We are disappointed to read that your experience did not meet your expectations and apologize for your dissatisfaction. The resort offers an abundance of activities on site and we do recommend advance reservations for most (such as Horseback Riding), however there is also an abundance of activities that are part of your accommodation and do not have costs associated or require advance reservations such as use of the indoor and outdoor pools, hot tub, fitness room, board games. For the summer season we also include use of our extensive inflatable water park and all non-motorized water craft such as canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards. During winter the following additional activities are available: cross country skiing, snow shoeing, ice skating and hockey. I am sorry that you may not have been aware of these.

Future guests: We do recommend guests visit our website or contact us directly to learn about our facilities/amenities and offerings and make advance reservations to avoid disappointment.

Stayed for 4 nights in a one bed condo.
The condo was in very good condition (refurbished?). All but one light worked. Very comfortable.
The space in the atrium is a bit of a waste: never used whilst we were there.
I concur with the lack of housekeeping: we had 3 bags of rubbish (we made some meals) and a full tub or recycling. So, where should the rubbish go? One day a bag was left by an inner door but not removed. Used the laundry, which was handy.
Maintenance issue: lots of poorly set concrete slab walkways - uneven, even though lots of joints have been angle ground to make it less of a trip hazard. Choose a proper contractor next time that knows about using sub-bases. Same issue with block work paving, which is in a poor condition - maybe laid by Gippos?
Liked the golf course view: however I never saw anyone walk the course. Does everyone use a buggy, or are they all too lazy (a bit like the other reviewer that needs a car to get from the main building to the beach - it's a 5 min walk downhill - you need the exercise)?
Used outdoor pool, which was good. Also, used temporary water park, despite chilly lake water. Took a hike, which had a Great view.
Used canoes, kayaks and paddle boards a couple of times. Busy at times.
Used climbing wall too.
Also used bar restaurant.
Much preferred this resort to the fake Blue Mountains.

Thank you for the detailed review. We are pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay with us in Muskoka and were able to partake in the many onsite activities and amenities Your feedback is very much appreciated and I will share your comments with our team – Thank you.

Your comment regarding Housekeeping is important to us. Our vacation rental condos and suites do not receive daily housekeeping as they are fully stocked prior to arrival. Should stays exceed three nights, a towel and amenity refresh service will be provided complimentary on the 4th day of the stay. Our reservation & front desk agents communicate this to guests at the reservation stage, on pre-arrival letters and it is outlined on our website. I sincerely apologize if we missed this important communication during our discussions and correspondence with you.

Also want you to know that each year we invest a considerable amount in capital property improvements and will be repairing and/or replacing the sidewalks and walkways near the Summit Lodges shortly.

We are hopeful you will return to our corner of Muskoka again soon!

The beach and swimming areas are covered in bird droppings. My child got slivers on the deck. No bell people to help carry luggageabd no elevators in condos. They do not provide cleaning in the condos unless you are staying for 4 or more days.

We are disappointed to read that your experience did not meet your expectations and apologize for your dissatisfaction. We of course, hope your child recovers quickly from the sliver she received. As for your comment on the geese, our lakeside property is home to lots of Muskoka wildlife. At this time of year we do see an increase in geese as they migrate south. We have implemented natural and non-harmful deterrents in the last year which has made a significant improvement and will continue to address this.

An awesome trip north to Deerhurst...food was delicious (we went with a la carte in lieu of the buffet)...and the treatments at the spa were terrific for all of us...David from Australia and the entire team are superb ...spa is a little small....looking forward to an expanded location in the future:-)...and getting up early is the way to go and almost guarantees amazing wildlife photos while driving in the highlands!

Glad you had an awesome trip! We are pleased to read of your positive experience and will ensure our Shizen Spa team is aware of your feedback (especially David).

We agree, the overall best time for wildlife viewing is certainly in the early morning. One of our guests was enjoying the sun rise dockside on Peninsula Lake when they witnessed a loon drive for a fish right before their eyes this morning.

Thank you again for posting a review. We look forward to your return again soon!
