Travelling at this time of the year through parts of Vancouver Island, we took the opportunity and search for places where there is a chance to see the spawning run of salmon. Having never seen this befor live - we were simply fascinated and returned a few days later.
It is really awesome seing these creatures jumping "for their lifes" - going up the rivers and giving their lifes for the next generation. They jump one or two stones, hit their heads and bodies and when the stream is too strong they are "pushed back" three or four stones and start again - giving up is something they don't know !
We have tried to find other places, but were probably a few days too early - nevertheless we returned and noted how important water is for the salmon. The second time there was less water and they could "warm-up" enough in order to get over some of the bigger stones.
It was one of the best experiences we had on Vancouver Island.
