Like most motels in Parksville, this is an older, somewhat dated property. But it’s clean, comfortable and well maintained, centrally located and one of the better values in an area that can be quite pricey even off-season.
We had a spacious end unit with two queen beds, a full kitchen and a dining table with four chairs. It was well enough equipped that we could have cooked all our meals, had we chosen to do so. In addition to an electric stove, small fridge, microwave, toaster and coffee maker, we had a good selection of pots and pans (mostly new or newish) along with dishes, glasses and cutlery for four. Even dishwashing liquid, sponge and tea towels are provided.
The decor is anything but trendy (haven’t most places ditched the floral bedspreads by now?), but if that sort of thing bothers you, the VIP is probably not somewhere you were considering staying anyway. Beds are comfortable if somewhat creaky. Maybe other rooms are different, but in ours the mattress was set atop a box spring that seemed more box than spring. If you sat on the edge, it creaked, though once you got into bed, it was okay. We had a plug-in fan but no air conditioning, but I’m not sure that would ever be a problem. It was unusually hot for September when we stayed, but the room was always a comfortable temperature. Also included: a flat-screen TV; fast, reliable wifi connection; and lots of towels in the bathroom, plenty of hot water and good water pressure.
Each room has a numbered parking spot right outside the door, so no need to drag baggage across the property. We never heard any noise from adjacent rooms, the parking area or even the highway, unless the door was open. Even then, many rooms are set back far enough from the highway that traffic is not bothersome.
A basic continental breakfast is included in the room rate. You can pick up coffee, juice, cereal, toast or muffin at reception and take it back to your room. The owners are pleasant and helpful. Not a fancy place, but I’d have no hesitation recommending it if you just need reasonably priced accommodation for a couple of nights.
