“Good now but going to be amazing!”
Reviewed 12 September 2013 via mobile

Me and my husband stayed in room 101, recently renovated. It has stunning views even when taking a shower. The owner showed us to our room he was full of information about the town and where to visit near by. The reception staff were extremely helpful giving us advice on where to eat and drink etc. we have both really enjoyed our stay. They are currently renovating the hotel, it really will be amazing when it's completed, especially in ski season. Highly highly recommend. Visited from uk.

An old but good hotel with a great helpful staff. Rooms are small meant to accommodate a couple, it is a little dated but still has a nice charm to it. The bar and restaurant attached are excellent, really fun place to be all around.

Overall the hotel was great. It is right downtown and everything is within walking distance and it has a nice view of the lake.

The hotel was clean and everything was functional. The hotel is small and quaint. I stayed in the renovated part of the hotel, and the renovated rooms were uber-modern in a European style.

The only issue was that the renovated rooms were directly over the sports bar on the first floor. Which on a Saturday night, was extremely loud until the place closed and cleared out around 2:30 am. In fact, it was so loud in the room that I decided to just hang out in the bar until it cleared out.

Room Tip: If you don't want to be up late, stay in the older rooms which are above the restaurant side of...

Ok, the renos are coming along and we were lucky to be able to stay in one of the newly renovated rooms, with a king-sized bed. That part of the stay was comfortable. The room was a bit small, though and we didn't care for the opaque bathroom door. No privacy at all! However the shower was very nice and modern. The floors were creaky, even though they were new. The room was quiet and we felt safe.

The restaurant downstairs was extremely good. Excellent food and service. A brilliant selection of martinis too.

This place is going to be very very trendy when it's finished, but there are a few issues, as noted above. I also think it's a little overpriced for what you get.

Room Tip: Be sure and ask for one of the newly renovated rooms.

We decided to take the scenic (long) way home from Kelowna to Calgary, via Nelson as we had never been there before.

We came across the New Grand Hotel, and decided to give it a try. It was obviously an old hotel, we were offered either an old room w/ a King bed, or a new room w/ a Queen bed. We opted for the new room, paid a bit more but it was impressive. The rooms were smaller than a typical hotel room; based on how old the hotel was this made sense. New bathrooms, a closet to put your luggage, and new windows... it was all newly done.

The lady working the front desk when we got there was friendly and approachable. She told us about the town of Nelson, and when we asked for a corkscrew and wine glasses, she was able to get us some from the nearby restaurant, hassle-free. There is free parking at the back of the hotel, which is appreciative as Nelson does have paid-parking during business hours.

It is clear that there is an old vs. newly updated wing of the hotel. I'm not so sure I would have been so impressed with the old part, but understandably they are renovating the old part now as well.

My only feedback is that the floors in the new part still creek. Someone leaving their room and walking down the hallway was clearly heard. I'm not a light sleeper, so I noticed it but it didn't keep me up at night.

I would stay here again!

Room Tip: Stay in the newly renovated wing if you get a chance...

Just returned home from another epic motorcycle trip in B.C. and Alberta. While in Nelson, I had the complete pleasure of staying at the New Grand Hotel. My heartfelt thanks go out to Destiny and Rhonda at the front desk, Graham, our bar manager, and the very sweet and lovely Allie and Stephanie in the Uptown Bar. The weather may not have been the best on our trip, but the staff at this hotel are the friendliest I have ever run into.As Arnold is so fond of saying.. "I'll Be Back."

We were planning a couple's getaway and were disappointed to find that every hotel and B&B we wanted seemed to be booked for the long weekend except the New Grand. We were put off by the recent negative reviews, but thought we would take a chance.

I called and the lady at the desk was very pleasant and offered me the rates up front for a regular room and a newly updated room. The new rooms were $125/night which was $20ish? more than the regular ones. We decided to go the gusto and book the new room.

The room knocked our socks off! It definitely wasn't what we were expecting to find in a heritage hotel but it was very fresh and fun. If you want a heritage feel, maybe try the Hume.

What we loved:
- tasteful, new decor that isn't the average dingy "hotel" stuff, lots of natural light (3 windows for us)
- AWESOME air conditioner placed right above the bed - dead silent and worked like a charm
- electric fireplace (kind of like a TV)
- comfy king sized bed with clean, new, comfy sheets
- friendly staff at the front desk, as well as chamber maid we spoke to and the restaurant staff downstairs
- good location, walking distance to waterfront, Baker Street shops, Trolley, WalMart Plaza
- high powered, REAL hair dryer provided in the room. Not a cheap hotel one, this one got the job done.
- Snazzy ipod dock alarm clock
- Coupons from the front desk man saved us $12 on drinks in the pub!
- Free iPod loan-out to guests
- Liquor Store, Sports Pub, Coffee Shop & Lounge all on-site. We made use of all but the Coffee Shop (though I read online that they are the earliest coffee shop to open in Nelson)

What we didn't love:
- as a part of the trendy charm, the bathroom door is actually a frosted glass shower door. Although it looks cool it leaves a lot to be desired in the privacy department - it doesn't latch and it has about .5" gap on the sides. Hopefully they realize this before installing them in the other rooms
- Parking? We had to park on the street for one night, then fight for one of the few stalls in the back. If you leave your stall, expect it to be poached as soon as you leave. Ours was!
- No mirror or artwork in the room itself. So for fixing up your hair and face, you have to fight for the bathroom
- No continental Breakfast

Once this hotel is done the renovations it will surely be awesome! They are putting in a gym, hot tub and common kitchen area which sounds great. We were disappointed as it was marked on the map in our room but actually hasn't been done yet! Would have been great to use the hot tub. (Note - the new rooms had a shower only, no tub.)

I don't see what all the fuss is about with the negative reviews as I dealt with the exact same staff as they did and found the areas we used to all be clean. I can't help but notice that many of the negative reviewers actually didn't stay here at all, they ended up going somewhere else...
