My husband and I stayed here for two nights in the middle of September and found the Cloudside Inn to be one of the best places we stayed in. The location of the Inn is perfect - just a few blocks from downtown Nelson yet away from the hustle and bustle of the town. Though the view from our room (the Aspen) was not particularly good, there is a great deck at the back which is perfect for sipping wine after a day of exploring and there is an additional sitting area on the front porch for a different view. Our room was very nice - plenty of room and wireless internet access. One note of clarification - the private bathroom is adjacent to the room and you have to go into the hall to get in (but they provide you with a nice bathrobe).

The breakfast was fabulous - I can't believe anybody would complain about it. In addition to the cereals, yogurt, etc, we had a choice of a hot breakfast each morning. One morning we had tasty french toast and the other we had delicious pancakes.

Chris and Sally were extremely helpful and pleasant hosts. Though they don't give their own opinions regarding the best restaurants, they do provide a list of restaurants that are rated by the guests who stay there - great idea!

I would defininetly recommend this place for anyone going to Nelson.

A major part of the B&B experience is the food, and I don't know how this can be the #1 local B&B given the owners' complete lack of interest in providing good food. First, the coffee is so weak it is barely discernible as coffee - the owner has had feedback about it but obviously wants to stretch his coffee dollar. Some guests during our stay went to a local coffee house to bring back 'real' coffee for breakfast. There is a sideboard on which you can help yourself to yogurt, fresh (albeit ordinary) cut up fruit - apples, bananas, grapes - and granola, which in most cases is the preliminary to the main event. Over three days, we were subjected to a cold, plain, undercooked waffle which was really quite inedible, two teeny pancakes on a little plate that came with a stodgy little muffin (all served with Aunt Jemima rather than real maple syrup as most B&Bs would do), and for a third day a seriously overcooked egg baked in a muffin tin, topped with a little grated cheese, and served on a dry English muffin with a little piece of ham - most of which was left uneaten by the large group at our table. We aren't sure if the owners just have no pride in what they put on the table or they want to spend as little as they can get away with. I don't know who is writing the other reviews praising the food, but we have enjoyed dozens of B&B experiences that we can compare with this one, and this is by far the worst food experience we have encountered.

We appreciate the opportunity to respond to this review, although wish that we had had the chance to speak to this customer directly: they raised no concerns during their stay. Both Sally and I (Chris) are genuinely upset that we have failed to meet their expectations of the Cloudside Inn. We really welcome all feedback, especially the bad, as only by knowing what we are not doing well enough can we improve. As a small mom and pop operation, we are quite shocked by these responses to our service, as we have never had any prior negative comments; in fact, exactly the opposite: often we asked for recipes, which is why we still provide this breakfast. However, we clearly didn’t work hard enough this guest, and for that, we are really sorry, although we wish we had known at the time.

Actions that we will take in response to these comments are:
- encourage guest opinions, anonymously, if necessary, on our home-blended coffee;
- seek similar feedback on food quality, range, and quantity;
- put out a range of fruit in a bowl as well as the fresh fruit salad (which takes a lot longer to prepare – so that’s good news for us…). We will, however, continue to use the minimum 8, up to 12, largely seasonal fruits that we use now, as exotics have been unpopular in the past;
- Maple syrup will also be reintroduced (we had stopped using it because it had proven to be much less popular than the pancake syrup).

In light of the severe criticism, this might sound hollow, but we have had many, many compliments on our coffee, even though it is hard to always get it right when everyone’s tastes are so different. We actively promote the coffee shop referred to by BCreviewer25 (Oso Negro – a venerable Nelson institution and one of the best coffee houses in the whole of BC, just on the end of our block) as they are simply wonderful, and we cannot compete with what they focus on, and are experts at, which is why guests sometimes bring their espressos or lattes to the table.

We advertise that we offer a ‘homestyle’ breakfast, as we are not trying to be a fancy B&B, but just a simple, straightforward place to stay. If this style of breakfast is not home-baked granola, fresh fruit, different yoghurts, home-made muesli, five other cereals, tea, toast, coffee, juice, home-baked muffins and a different daily hot course such as pancakes, eggs to order, French Toast or waffles, I hope that other guests will soon let us know. More is always offered, including on the occasion that this customer stayed with us.

This business is Sally’s and my heart and soul, and we will do anything to make our guests happy. I also know that, as an owner, criticism generally has to be a one-way street, and we can’t expect plaudits all of the time. That said, I have to admit that I am more than little perplexed as to how we managed to get it quite so wrong three times in a row for BCreviewer25. We will have to try harder.

We stayed in the family apartment on the topfloor, which fits six (but 5 would be better). The house is beautiful and the owners are very friendly. There's a lot of information available about the area and there's even a reviewguide for the local restaurants based on experiences of B&B guests. Breakfast is all fresh and really nice. The kitchen in our apartment was basic and did not have enough equipment to conveniently cook a meal for six.
The B&B is located in the towncenter. There's free parking available at the back of the house, where also is a beautiful wooden patio.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Cloudside Inn Sept. 1-3. Chris and Sally, the owners/hosts, were friendly and helpful. They gave us solid recommendations on restaurants (Jackson's Hole, The Preserved Seed, the Library in the Hume Hotel ) and places to see in Nelson.
The food was excellent -- we had eggs Benedict one morning, with awesome homemade banana muffins. We had French toast and pancakes our other breakfasts, also with tasty muffins. The only minor complaint is the coffee was weak. We also enjoyed fascinating conversations with guests from England, Holland and various parts of British Columbia.
The home is beautiful -- I believe it is on Nelson's Heritage Home list -- it was built in 1906. We stayed in 2 rooms -- the Cedar and the Aspen, both of which were nice and comfortable. The Cedar looks out over downtown, with the mountains in the distance. Aspen has a view of uptown, with more mountains in the background. Chris and Sally are talented photographers, and their photos from around the world decorate the hallways and stairways.
All the rooms are upstairs, while the dining and common areas are downstairs. A computer with Internet access is available to all guests.
Chris and Sally are available if you have questions or need help, but otherwise remain in their private portion of the house and give guests their space.
I would highly recommend the Cloudside Inn. It is also walking distance to pretty much everything in Nelson -- or running distance for the more ambitious.
