“Very restful stay!”
Reviewed 12 September 2011

The North Shore Inn, although it's an older place, fulfilled all our needs perfectly. We were in Nelson for a wedding and fhe only time we were there was to sleep, we weren't looking for a resort. It was affordable, clean and surprisingly quiet even though it was right beside the road. The blackout drapes were a great touch, as the motel sign is right in front of the building and the sun shines directly in in the morning. Great pillows too!
The complimentary breakfast was simple: toast or bagels that you made yourself and we enjoyed the most awesome cinnamon raisin toast.
Basic, simple, that's what we wanted, that's what we got.
The flowers!! Gorgeous pink flowers along the front of the building..they were so lovely and they smelled great. They were nice to go home to at the end of a busy day. We'd stay there again if we needed a good place to lay our heads down.

For the price, this is a good option for a short stay. We stayed for one night on our travels and while it is a bit dated, the room does have a fridge and microwave. There is no coffee maker but there is a small continental breakfast with coffee, juice, toast, bagels etc.

Located on the north shore as the name states is a across the bridge and a quite bit of a walk from downtown amenities so if you dont have a car might be best to stay closer to town, Older motel however there is a free continental breakfast and free guest computer to use. comfy rooms but older

Room was good size and clean, beds were comfortable. Bathroom was functional and really clean. I would say that the fixtures could be updated, but they were clean and consistent with the price paid for the hotel. Lakeview from the room was beautiful. Wireless internet was good enough, Free parking and a free continental breakfast was not bad but limmited choices. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Location is not right in downtown area but very quiet.

as soon as we entered the inn we knew what we were expecting, cheap, and hasn't been updated since like 1970....the bed was awful, hard as a rock. multiple dead and alive bugs in the room, pictures on web site are deceiving, the view is horrible, the continental breakfast was a joke, consisting of 3 loaves of bread a toaster and orange juice...bathroom cleanliness was something to be desired.
but if you love 1970 plad couches and blue toilets there is no better place

We stayed at the North Shore Inn in Nelson, BC on the first
August weekend in 2009 for a family reunion. As soon as I
walked into the lobby I knew it was old. The decor was
1980-ish. We checked in and did the normal authorization
with my credit card. I entered my pin number for my credit
card and was about to put my card away, like everywhere I
I had stayed, the front desk clerk asked for my card back
so she can make a hard copy of my card for a damage deposit.
I became concerned and asked why and she gave me the excuse
that all the hotels in Nelson were doing this. I felt
insulted, assuming that we would damage our room. I became
furious when I learned that my in-laws, who checked in just
moments before us, and were staying next door to us, were
not asked for a damage deposit. I realized they asked us for
a damage deposit because I have two children, one
six and one eight. Just because we have children, they
assumed that they will damage the room. This is no less
than profiling. The management of this hotel is bended on
condemning children.

I understand lots of people do profiling but to profile
young children was offensive.

If they had a problem with children in their past, then that's
their problem not mine. And to make some lame excuse to cover
their profiling behaviour shows this management, in other
circumstance, would be labelled racists.

As I walked to my room, I realized this place reeked of cheapness.
The room key was ancient, it had written on it your room number
and the hotel address. So don't loose your key otherwise burglers
would be rumaging your room for goodies.

I gave the room some examination, since there was a damage deposit
on it. I saw the night table was badly scratched, there were
dents in the wall, there was a hole in bathroom where the sink
piping use to be, and a print of an iron on the carpet. The
fixtures were of an ugly blue, except the toilet was white.
The toilet was not clean.

I reported the night table and iron print on the carpet to the
front desk. It seems the front desk was eager to take a damage
deposit but not have a room walk through with you.

Later on the check-in day, I was in downtown Nelson, I stepped
into the Hume Hotel, which was a higher class hotel than the
North Shore Inn, and told them that I have two children and asked
them if they take a damage deposit at check-in. The clerk was
amused and surprised that I was asked for a damage deposit at my
hotel when I checked-in with a credit card. So obviously,
"everyone was taking damage deposit" in the Nelson area was a lie.

In addition, the hot tub, which advertised as part of the hotel
was conveniently under renovation so our room rate was devalued
since we never got to use it.

So if you have children I would not recommend that you stay here.
This place would be good for seniors and people who have no
children.

And luckily, it was the start of our vacation not the end. Who
would want to end a vacation with such a bad encounter.

I chose the North Shore Inn because it was listed in the Rough Guide, and Nelson was where I ended up after a day of driving across the lake country on my way up to the Rocky Mountains. The hotel is about 10 minutes drive from the town of Nelson, on highway 3A, which goes up to the ferry across Kootenay Lake. The staff were friendly, the room was large, and the bed comfortable. There was a balcony, and the front of the hotel overlooks the lake - but it's not pleasant for sitting out as it's also on the main road. The hotel is safe and clean - it has WiFi, and there is also a PC in the lobby. This is a good place to stay for a few nights, if you just want somewhere to crash at the end of the day. My room did not have a kitchenette - if you are thinking of staying here for more than 2 nights, this would probably be a benefit, as Nelson is not the best place for a night out, and the free breakfast buffet is, like at many small hotels, very limited.
