Description: The Hume Hotel has three different food outlets to eat in that offer the same menu and a vast array of food. A family restaurant called the General Store, an intimate fireside lounge featuring live jazz called the Library Lounge or a lively, old English-style bar called Mike's Place Pub. We cook up amazing steaks, pastas, seafood, the '100 Mile Burger', sandwiches, salads and homemade desserts. There is a full Gluten-Free menu available. We are also known for a legendary Sunday Brunch that goes from 11am - 2pm every Sunday. We are popular for our consistency, generous portions, food quality and reasonable prices all to be enjoyed in a character atmosphere that was built in 1898. There is no place like the Hume.

“Nude in The Library”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

The best meals we had while in the Crawford Bay/ Nelson B.C.area were in The Library lounge in the historic Hume Hotel. Not only was the food excellent, but the service was friendly -- the kind of natural, unassuming interaction you expect in a small Canadian town. But, of course, Nelson is a B.C. gem ( and I don't mean jade). As for the nudes -- I spy with my naked eye -- check-out the ceiling and the fireplace.

“Aunt Daisy Visits Again”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

On June 27th 2013 my Aunt Daisy, took myself (nephew Fred) and (wife Joanne) once again to the library or lunch.
Aunt Daisy is a regular in The Library, at her favorite table beside the fireplace and our server / hostess M. J. (that's what she likes to go by) brought her cushion for the chair - - - which we found out is a ritual when Aunt Daisy visits her favorite restaurant in Nelson..
As usual the service was excellent and the food superb.
We (Joanne and I) have come to The Library every time we are in Nelson to visit - - because of the food and service.
We found M.J. our server to have a very special "Sparkle" about her.
She was in control of her surroundings and guests and working what SEEMED to be effortlessly.
I don't know what the other servers name is but they appear to work well together.
What I do know because Joanne and I eat out frequently while travelling and even in our home city that M. J. is one of the best hostesses we have encountered.
When we were in the food service industry it would have been a pleasure to have her on our staff as a leader.
Thank you M.J. for the service and for always looking after our Aunt Daisy.
In conversations with various staff at The Hume Hotel it is apparent that the owners know how to treat their management and staff - - they all appear to be a very happy group from the front desk inward.
It is and always has been a pleasure to eat at The Library and we will be back again next summer when we come to visit Aunt Daisy.

We are happy that Aunt Daisy brought you back to the historic Hume Hotel. MJ has been working in this hotel since 1990. She is one of many of our long term staff who really set this place apart from so many other places. She is so good at what she does every single day and it keeps people like Aunt Daisy coming back. We are lucky to have her and we really appreciate your comments. I will be sure to share this with her and the rest of the Library Lounge crew.

“Enjoyable meal”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

We enjoyed our dinner at the Library restaurant at the Hume Hotel in Nelson. It was very crowded and we had to wait a while for a table but we enjoyed sitting out on the patio while we waited. The meal was very good and service was just great.

“Beautiful room, excellent service, mediocre food.”
Reviewed 20 June 2014

Our dinner at the Library in the Hume Hotel started well. It was a cold evening, we were by the fireplace and an excellent Jazz singer was performing. The menu provided nothing too interesting so I chose the cabbage rolls - given the Doukabor history of the area. The cabbage rolls were just okay. The accompanying salad contained sour tomatoes, limp lettuce and a nonidescript balsamic dressing. Luckily beer goes well with cabbage rolls and I didn't have to select a wine. The wine list was pitiful - surprising as the Kootenays neighbour the Okanagan where many fine wines are produced. Although the staff was friendly and efficient and the entertainment pleasant, I would not recommend this restaurant for a meal.

I was really taken aback to read that you thought the wine list was 'pitiful'. We actually just launched our new wine list in May. You are right, the Okanagan Valley has many beautiful wines to choose from - that is why we focused on that region more than any other. Over half of the wine list are Okanagan wines that we feel are excellent, value wines covering a broad spectrum of varietals.

It is also surprising to hear that we had sour tomatoes and limp lettuce in your salad. I hope that you mentioned something to your server. We would have been more than happy to get your something else.

I'm glad you at least enjoyed the room itself and the service was good. Thanks for sharing.

“Happy Birthday”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

Our most recent visit to 'The Hume' was an open house for a significant birthday. The event was a huge success, primarily due to the expertise of Greg, the catering manager. We are fortunate to be residents of Nelson, and The Hume is our primary 'go to', and a must for our out of town visitors. The Hume has been a part of our lives since moving here, 40 years ago. We have never been disappointed with the food, service, and ambiance. The staff are awesome, Many of them are long term, which says a lot about the atmosphere in which they work. We would highly recommend the Hume.

Hi Keith - thanks so much for bringing in the crew for the big birthday get together. We are so lucky to have Greg Schlosser still working here after 34 years. He has been with us every step of the way and is adored by everyone in the community. He epitomizes loyalty and hard work. Thanks for making note of his contribution to this hotel.
