“We Loved It!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2011

We stayed at Hillside at the beginning of August and absolutely loved it. We stayed in the Grizzly (sleeps 6!) and thought it was great. We walked down to the river and enjoyed a relaxing weekend in the mountains.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to relax and have a great base for day trips. They have smaller cabins as well which I would love to come back for.

We stayed at Hillside for 4 days while doing 2 weeks of day-hiking in the Canadian Parks. We needed sleeping arrangements for 5 and asked for a kitchen. Let me start by saying I have very mixed feelings regarding my stay.To make a long story short, if there are only 2 of you and you aren't planning to do any cooking, this would be a great place. But it is not big enough for more than 3 people and there are just not enough supplies in the kitchen to cook even a simple meal. The setting was great. These are lovely cabins in a great quiet location. We stayed in the "Grizzly" and it appeared to be pretty new and in very good condition and very clean. So no issues there. That being said, you should be prepared for what this lodge is lacking. We were a family of 5 and we did a lot of cooking on this trip. I explained this when I called to ask about renting a cabin. We were told there was plenty of room for five and the kitchen was fully stocked with everything we would need. There were beds for five. But they didn't tell us that was 2 twins, 1 futon and one full bed. That's ok. We can survive with that. But there wasn't room for 5 people to sit in the living room. The TV is only 15 inch and there is no cable, only DVDs you can rent. The really strange part was there were no top sheets on the bed, no blankets and no box springs. It was just a super thin mattress with a comforter - and a super bad pillow. To say the kitchen was well stocked was the overstatement of the year. No drinking glasses, except for 6 oz. juice glasses, only one small round cake pan for the oven. So cooking bread of any kind was a problem and definitely no casseroles or french fries. The only utensils were a ladel and one spatula. There were no stirring or serving spoons, no wisks, no tongs, no graters. No pitchers for juice or lemonade, and only one small frying pan. We went to the office to request additional kitchen supplies, but the language barrier was so difficult we just gave up. Also please be aware that you have to put the "maid service" sign out if you want your garbage removed and your towels restocked (just the opposite of what you normally do). I guess the thing that bothered me most was that they encouraged you to put your dirty towels and garbage on the porch each morning and they would pick those up and not clean the entire cabin. But they have a bear that lives in the area and he was seen just down the river from us. The rules with bears are simple - no access to garbage. That bothered me.

Room Tip: ok for couples who don't cook

We stayed one night, in a beautiful king-size room with balcony overlooking the Columbia River, with lovely garden and trees below. There was a very warm welcome from Sonja and Hubert (great cook!). Hummingbirds come to the feeder by the dining room window and other wildlife may be seen in the garden if you are lucky! Excellent breakfast included in the price. Our room was in the Lodge, but there are several log chalets also. Cannot recommend this place enough. 13k west of Golden, look for the large board on the side of the road.

Room Tip: If short stay, get room with balcony in Lodge

We were lucky to find this secluded hideaway some five years ago and have been going there for a summer get away ever since. We just wanted to let anyone reading this know that you will find the most precious place in the Rockies when you stay here. The views of the Blaeberry River and the mountains are the most incredible you will ever get to gaze upon. Total relaxation is how we can describe this heaven on earth and the best thing about it is the owners. Sonia and Hubert become instant wonderful friends and many hours can be spent just chatting with them and other guests after dining on the most incredible cuisine anywhere. The accommodations are perfect with spotless chalets and the beautiful lodge. The location is very central to many great activities and things to site see. To sum everything up is to say that we have not bothered looking anywhere else for a summer vacation because we honestly believe there are no better than the Hillside!!!
Thankyou Sonia and Hubert for another wonderful stay and see you next year if not sooner!

Stayed one night to break up the trip between Vancouver and Calgary. Great location with panoramic views from the balcony. Walked the grounds and down along the river. The room was comfortable and the lodge fit right into the mountainous locale. We ate dinner in the dinning room and it was very good. The service by the owners was friendly and accomodating.

You would think you arrived in Switzerland or Bavaria, with the picturesque chalets and meadows surrounded by majestic mountains. Hosts Hubert and Sonja are welcoming, the rooms with handcrafted furniture are charming, and the views from the lodge magnificent. The property is far enough off the highway to avoid road noise. Only disappointment was that the home cooked dinners were not available that day (early season, and we were the only guests that night). The beds ,firm in the european style, were very cosy with down comforters which made for a very good night's rest. The freshly cooked breakfast was very good.

We would stay there again anytime, and wish we had stayed there again on our way back!

Sonja and Hubert welcomed our family for a large gathering Thanksgiving weekend. The location, setting, experience, meal and genuine care from the hosts could not have been more perfect. We definitely shared in their little piece of heaven in Golden. Our entire family was able to be together for the whole weekend - from infants to grandparents, and all had a great time exploring, relaxing and just plain enjoying the spectacular location that Hillside is...no one wanted to go home! This was our second stay at the property and we will definitely be back in the new year!
