If you are interested in rail travel history, you will love this attraction. I took the guided tour and even though it was long, it kept me interested the entire time. I loved seeing the cars decorated just as they would be in their respective time periods.

We took the full tour and found it extremely interesting. Unfortunately our guide was new and had very limited knowledge when questioned. The restored carriages are incredible. Fabulous exotic wood. Cost is too high but helps the restauration process.

Interesting museum, but the feeling is that we were not in a train museum but into a very large restore shop. They did an awesome work but the presentation somehow focus on restoration process work, not on items themselves.

Many BC towns seem to have railway museums which is not surprising given the huge impact that rail had in the early days. The carriage collection at the Cranbrook Museum is very extensive, some of which have been sensitively restored to show the original styles as well as later refurbishments. That way viewers can seen how furnishing fashions have changes over the years. There is a huge amount still be done. Viewing is only by guided tour and there were only 4 people on our tour. In each carriage, the guide played a tape recorded description of the carriage. This is intended to ensure quality control of the narrative but frankly we got sick of the repetitive piano honkytonk music playing and the constant harping on about how much work needed to be done and how it was going to cost such a lot of money. If they need to fundraise they should just come out and ask for donations.

We didn't have time to explore the museum but made a special trip to check out the gift shop. Lots of train related items available for purchase. Picked up a couple of railroad necktie bars for wearing back at the office once our vacation is over.
