“Peaceful Ocean Side Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2013

We stayed here for two nights in June 2013 as part of a 25th Anniversary trip to Canada.

On arrival the ladies at reception couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. Our room was in one of the ocean front lodges and had lovely views over the dock and over to April Point. I had been a bit worried about some of the reviews on here about the rooms and bathrooms looking a little tired and I guess you could say they have been in situ for a while but it was all lovely and clean and everything worked as it should. It's not a swanky shiny new modern hotel, but I don't think that is what it sells itself as.

We ate in the pub on arrival and had really good food, we had a nice breakfast in the restaurant and also lunch and breakfast over at April Point having taken the free water taxi over.

We really enjoyed the quiet, laid back atmosphere of the place and it was just what we needed to adjust from UK time to Pacific time. Thanks for the management for the anniversary card and lovely fruit basket.

The grounds are beautiful at Painters Lodge and the pub and restaurant have spectacular views. The food is decent and reasonably priced. The rooms are fine. Clean and comfortable and with free Wi-Fi. I was warned at check-in that the Wi-Fi might not work in the Quadra Wing where we stayed, but it worked just fine. If connectivity is important to you, tell them at the desk and perhaps they can locate you where the signal is more guaranteed. The staff are professional and friendly, helpful in every way. We found that our room was a bit small and the decor wasn't exactly au courant but it was fine and the linens were of good quality. Also, we were in the pet friendly wing, so other rooms may be better appointed. Fair enough, I'm just grateful that they have a pet friendly area. All in all this is a beautiful spot. The grounds are gorgeous and the landscaping team should be commended. There's also a pool, which is great for kids. The free water taxi to April Point on Quadra Island would be worth the trip - but we didn't take it because of the doggies. Friends have taken the trip to quadra, rented scooters and toured Quadra Island. They said it was a blast. I think that all the rooms have balconies at Painters which is certainly appreciated by folks who smoke. They have ashtrays on the deck so it's definetly okay.

I hope this helps you make your plans!

I’m so glad you enjoyed your stay at Painter’s Lodge. Just a heads up, dogs are allowed on the water taxi and April Point is very pet friendly, so during your next stay with us if you want to take a trip to April Point feel free.

We just returned from a stay with a group of colleagues at Painter's Lodge-Campbell River. We enjoyed the waterfront room with gorgeous rooms and plenty of space although we hardly spent one moment in our room as we took advantage of the fun activities between this lodge and April Point.

Our group included 8 and 10 year old girls who were eager to try their hand at fishing. I offered to take the 8 year old and we were luckily assigned to a young guide named Conor who was in his first year of guiding for the lodge. He was hands down the best guide I have ever fished with, fully of energy, enthusiasm and assistance. We caught 17 Coho's (4 keepers) on the morning trip and had the time of our lives. In fact we enjoyed it so much my husband and I stayed after the rest of the group departed and fished with Conor again on the evening trip. We caught a Chinook and another Coho, again a fabulous time. My husband sooned learned why I raved about Conor, he works incredibly hard to help you catch your fish and at the same time has a wonderful, fun personality.

We ate in the restaurant one night with our group and had a fabulous meal with excellent service. My husband and I ate in the pub 3 times, the food was excellent and the staff were awesome with big smiles, friendly attitudes and great service.

We loved our stay, our only regret is we did not stay longer.

Room Tip: Select a waterfront room if you can for awesome views.

We stayed a couple of nights at this splendid place and found the room very spacious, wonderful views out over the water, service good and restaurant food good. The terrace to the room did however not offer much privacy if residents were out on their terrace. The only criticism is the Internet does not work in your room and the only good place to receive it was in the hotel lobby. The hotel is alittle way out of the town of Campbell River which was a good place to shop. The resort offers whale watching and wildlife tours from its premises but we did not use this service. There is a small pool. Watching the comings and goings on the water is very relaxing and would well recommend this hotel for those who want peace and quiet.

Room Tip: Not a lot of places for walking near the hotel

My husband and I just spent 3 nights at Painters Lodge. We got the stay 2 nights, get the third night free deal and it was worth it. We had a lovely ocean view room, which was more like a cottage than a room. The lower level was a living room with a balcony. The split level had the washroom and then the upstairs was the bedroom. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and the room was clean and cozy.

We were very disappointed however that the internet was completely non existent in the room despite the fact that they advertise wifi in the rooms on their webpage and I also asked about it when I made the reservation. The only place the wifi worked was in the lobby. The poor staff had to deal with so many complaints about the lack of internet that I actually felt sorry for them. Yes, we are on holidays and are there to relax, but if you are running your own business you need access to the internet. Management needs to look at the fact that they are falsely advertising a service they clearly do not have and they need to remove it immediately from their website and train their staff at the time of booking.

Having said all that, we did have a lovely trip. The food at both the pub and the formal dining room were excellent!! We booked a fishing trip and were very happy with our fishing guide, Reg, and the fact that we caught fish! The property is lovely and overall we had a fantastic stay.

Room Tip: If you need access to the internet, do not stay here.

Love, love, love the hotel, did not like the fishing, but then again it has to do to with nature and every one know how unpredictable that can be. Our room was unbelievable, two story with a balcony overlooking the Campbell's River, sitting outside our room in a tree was a Bald eagle so close I could have touched him, that was a common happening. The staff very attentive and welcoming, the restaurant had fantastic food and inviting atmosphere, to me, look for a restaurant where the locals go and that is where I want to eat, and they where there!

Room Tip: rooms on the river

My husband and I recently stayed at Painter's Lodge in Campbell River, BC. Has to be one of the best ocean side places to stay...that being said we were in a ocean view room in the Lodge and for the price one pays thought the lack of air conditioning plus being able to hear the people next door coughing and talking was a tad extreme. On a very hot day one could easily find it way too hot to sleep, only one tiny window opened to the outside and the balcony door which could have been used was not usable as our room shared the balcony with two other rooms which was totally inappropriate. The bathroom was so small that closing the door while using the toilet was claustrophobic - think the facilities are overpriced. The 3 eating areas within the Lodge had good food although the service was very, very slow even though not busy. The standard was below par. The free water taxi over to April Point was a bonus for those staying at Painter's although again the amenities over at April Point were few and far between except for the Spa. All the buildings at both places are rustic and somewhat tired looking and feeling. I would probably stay at a Best Western my next trip to Campbell River as I have never been disappointed with on of those establishments.

Room Tip: Wouldn't stay In the older section which is the Lodge itself.
