“River runs through it”

Quinsam River Hatchery
Reviewed 18 January 2014

Try and get there once a year. When the fish are in the River it's a photographers dream. Eagles maybe a bear or two, makes for such a great experience. The info centre on site is very well done.

The hatchery and more properly, the fish here, can be awe inspiring if your timing is right. There is a picnic table right beside the river where you can sit and have your coffee and watch salmon swimming upriver then you can head up the path or drive a short distance to the hatchery proper and take a self-guided tour of the salmon in various stages of development and wander through the building containing the history of, and examples of, the different types of salmon. The 'Big Show' has to be the counting gate during the spawning seasons. A short walk (or roll, it is wheelchair accessible) from the hatchery pens, upriver, takes you to the counting gate which restricts the fish from proceeding upriver until they have massed a bit and been counted, which happens several times daily. This years run of over a million pinks made for a spectacular display and at any given time during the run, you could see several thousand fish pooling in a very small area in front of the gate. All this and it's free to boot! We have taken to spending a couple of hours here a few times per week during the spawn. Did I mention the bears who fish right along side the fly fishers or the raptors helping themselves to a seafood meal?

Kindergarten/ grade 1 classes had a guided tour of the facility. There is lots to see as self guided as well. Really enjoyed the information centre which was new to me.

Again, our hotel recommended us to stop by. I am glad we made the stop, although the salmon weren't quite running yet; too early. However, we were able to see the small baby salmon! Both the museum and staff were very informative, gave us an understanding of just how much effort the locals are putting into the industry and all. Very admirable; the pride and joy. A good place to take your kids as well.

Park at the brigge and after a beautiful walk along the river you come to the museum where a lot of information about salmon is shown in a small space. The whole tour including the way there and back is maybe only 1,5h but it is worth it!
