“Wonderful surroundings, delicious food, excellent service”
Reviewed 29 July 2014

My family and I recently had three wonderful lunches and lazy afternoons at Domaine de Manville. It is a beautiful, tranquil place in one of the most gorgeous parts of the world. The staff are so friendly and helpful and the food is sublime (prepared by a very experienced and charming chef). We love it and can't wait to return!

My family (couple + 2 teens) booked a Duplex through SLH.com for as much as EUR735 per night for a 6-night stay in July, shortly after the hotel’s opening. As we had made extensive research on the hotels and their pricing in the region, we had high expectations of this hotel at this price level.

We were welcomed by Mr Deblond upon check-in, an exceptionally courteous and conscientious reception staff whom we had been corresponding with by email. When we enquired if an upgrade was available (as part of the SLH Club offer), he was kind enough to show us around in the hotel with a couple more rooms and indicated that an even larger room/duplex would be offered to us once available.

The layout of the Duplex we had was as good as expected. On the lower level there was a king size bed, a bathroom with double vanity/rain-shower/bathtub, a walk-in closet, a toilet and a small study. On the upper level there were two twin beds and another bathroom (rain-shower only) and a separate toilet.

On the first night we discovered that the upper-level bathroom could not be used as the rain-shower mixer was not working and only hot water came out. We didn’t expect that to be a major problem and assumed that the problem would be easily rectified during the rest of our stay.

In the next morning we had breakfast in a very spacious conservatory. On our way the General Manager introduced himself to us and was very welcoming and courteous.

Continental breakfast was served. Choice of food was rather limited. Basically only pastries, cereals and fruits were offered. I had expected at least some cold cuts and eggs (be prepared to pay EUR4-EUR6 for ordering an extra egg, even for boiled eggs). Another fact that made me feel the hotel could have been more generous was the lack of complimentary bottled water inside the room. Only 4 bottles were provided upon check-in. Any extra bottle would be charged. Toiletries quality were mediocre. Apart from some standard quality body conditioner.

Well, I have to say that judging from the breakfast and room amenities experience, this is not the type of generosity that one would expect from a hotel at this price range.

Housekeeping quality was also not up to standard. Towels, tissue box, or toiletries were missing or not fully replenished in either or both bathrooms almost everyday. On the 3rd day lumps of dust were already accumulating underneath the dining table on the lower level.

The overall experience of our stay was, unfortunately, tarnished by the malfunctioned water mixer in the upper bathroom which could not be fixed throughout our stay. We were told on day 4 that the problem in fact had something to do with the general piping system and a major overhaul had to be undertaken after our check-out. Our family of 4 were therefore only left with 1 usable bathroom and had to take turns to take a shower. Although from the 3rd night onwards we were offered another extra (but smaller) room for our use, we didn’t really occupy it except for shower purpose. After all, this is a family vacation and we would rather stay under the same roof in one room throughout our stay.

To the credit of the General Manager, he was very concerned and apologetic for the mixer problem we were experiencing and took the initiative to deduct 1 night off our bill.

Those hiccups aside, what impressed us most was the private theatre which had a huge movie screen and some 10 luxury adjustable seats. We watched all the 4 final matches of the World Cup there (including of course the Germany vs Brazil 7-1 match). A perfect entertainment after dinner during our stay.

All in all, this is a new hotel/golf resort only 3 minutes’ drive away from a nice small town, Maussane-les-Alpilles. There is still room for improvement in both the hardware and the software, though a few members of the team (Mr Deblond, another reception hostess who helped us with our driving directions everyday and a waitress at the conservatory) are to be commended for the quality of their service.

Dear Guest,

Thank you tor taking the time to share your comments with us.
As explained during your stay the shower problem was fixed the day after your departure, unfortunately!
Regarding the breakfast we are looking into some enhacements that we have already implemented.
We are sorry that you found the toiletries mediocre, the products are used in the Spa. This line was specially developed for us using the scents of Provence (olive oïl, lavender, verbena,...).
As you mentionned their is room for improvement and we are working on it, to be at our best for your next visit in Provence.

Warmest regards,

Patrick Nayrolles
General Manager
