Caribe Playa Beach Hotel
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Patillas
Reviewed 22 August 2012

This was our second stay at the Caribe Playa. Once again the staff greated us and got us all settled in. It is so enjoyable to hang out at this Vintage 60 hotel right on the water. Took our time wondering down the beach and went for a wonderful swim on the east side of the property. Went down the road to a great dinner at the La Cocina de Poseidon. A family enviroment on the carribean ocean. To our suprise there was WiFi on all of the property!! The travel channel had been there the week before filming "Of the Renovation of a Smal Family Hotel" They will be airing it in December 2012 on theTravel Channel. We can"t wait to go back and see all of the upates to the rooms. There is no need to change the VIEW it is perfect!!!

Our stay at this hotel was just to spend the night over, from the trip to Fajardo to the mountain Ruta Panoramica. It's a very rustic 60's motel style with all rooms facing the ocean. The beach is extremely rocky and dangerouse (I would never dare to swimm in here!). We were here in August and the current was very strong.. don't know about winter waves...

The cleanliness is OK. You'll just have to bare with the rust and the limestone on the taps and shower. I would not try to lick the toilett floor though.

The rooms are all over-priced (like all hotels in Puerto Rico..) : the economy Room (around 75 $ per night) is the best option you can get. It's a very small room with bathroom and A/C. There is no glass windows (just a plastic sheet) therefore the sound of the strong waves is very noisy. The electricity generator does an awfull strong buzzzz all night long. Better have some earplugs here !!! Our Room was on the ground level.

Megan, the receptionist (manager ?) is a nice lady, but will make you spend hours on the telephone trying to get every single letter of your address, telephone number and everything, which is annoying if you are using an international phone number.

Just stay there for 1 night (like a motel-style night) and don't ask for more. Patillas is a hole and there is nothing interesting around here.

On the website of the hotel are many beautiful photos of the resort and some rooms. The description of the hotel sounds great. So we have decided to spend our family vacation. When we arrived there at 2 Clock in the afternoon, our room was not ready yet. I asked the receptionist to call me when the room is ready. Unfortunately, she has forgotten it. When we finally were in our room, we were shocked. Nothing looked like the pictures! Everything was old and in poor condition. The mattresses were stained and dirty. In the windows are missing the panes.
The fire alarm was hanging on the wall. The kitchen without inventory. The bathroom was just disgusting. The next morning came the next big disappointment for breakfast. On the beach warning signs to go swimming there. There is a dangerous flow so that inexperienced swimmers are immediately drawn to the open sea We were four people in the room but included only breakfast for two. So we ordered two extra breakfasts. For 4 dollars then there came a slice of toast or a Baegel, some jam and butter! The second night we had to turn off the air conditioning because it was unbearably loud noises. We thought about it to fly home. Unfortunately we have already paid for 6 nights. We tried the next day to make the best of our trip. And we only got to sleep in the hotel.
In our room the beds were made daily. Nothing more and nothing less. It has not been cleaned for a week. Conclusion: Dear hotel owner, please go unannounced at your hotel. Visits the room and sleep there one night. You will be shocked at the sight and condition of the room. And you have only two possibilities for the future. Either you drastically reduce the prices and let everything as it is or renovate and bring your staff to clean everything every day.For me and my family it was the worst holiday we have ever had. We paid way too much and got almost nothing!

To call this a Beach Resort is overselling the place. This is definitively NOT a beach resort, is just a property by the "beach". To start, is is very difficult to find the place if you are not from the area. We arrive at night and it was raining so it was very hard to find the hotel. There is no clear sign that you can follow to get to the hotel, and if you use a GPS, you will end up going around in circles. Once you finally arrive to the hotel, you notice that the property is not what you expected.

First, the rooms are dirty and old, beds are broken and have small bugs, the dirt under the beds seems that has been there for a year, and the amenities are outdated; old 19" TV, 1960's dirty bathroom, moldy nightstand, noisy A/C, NO Wi-Fi (only works if you are sitting at the property's restaurant/office area), there are no phones in the rooms, and no microwave. The property It sits on a busy street so you can hear the trucks & cars passing by at any time (more noise during the morning hrs 6AM to 11AM) .

Second, DO not purchase what they call the :"Continental breakfast". How can a "resort" call breakfast to a choice of extremely limited items? You need to choose between 3 "courses" that are 2 pieces of toast OR a bagel OR a muffin, that's it. No fruit, no cold cereals to choose from. If you actually buy something, you will see that it is overpriced and low quality ($5 for a bowl of cereal of the cheapest brand you can find, $7 for 2 eggs and 1 toast, and so on)

Third, you cannot swim at the "beach" in front, there are very dangerous ocean currents in that area, the beach is mostly rocks, no sand, there is even a sign that warns of the dangerous currents. You will need to ask the locals where to go or just use the pool, which is not that great but at least it faces the ocean.

Last, but not least, the staff has the typical cocky attitude, which I find unprofessional. When I requested a service, they complained that I should had ask for that earlier. Talk about service!

To summarize, the only positive thing this hotel has is that all rooms face the ocean. You will be better just to park your car in front of the public beach and sleep in it. It will give you the same experience, plus you can always find better food at the nearby fast food restaurant (there is a BK and a Church's Chicken) or local pizzeria or bar that have the local "frituras" and beer.

Room Tip: Try a different hotel!

When booking this nasty hotel I ask them if it was accessible to wheelchair users. They said yes That I would have no problems. The only barrier was a small step at the room entrance. It was a big lie. When I finally got my room (after waiting for almost two hours) I found out the bathroom door was so small I could not get in. I ask for another room and they said does not have any. Then I said how then can I do my personal hygiene and biological needs?. They said that was my problem that they did not care about that. They humilliated me as a handicapped person. When I said I was leaving and ask for a refund they refused.
I advise this is an old estructure smells bad, there are stairs for getting acces to the pool, pathways are so narrowa wheelchair can hardly go throuh. The owner never showed up. I was treated like crap.

Room Tip: Never chosse Caibe Playa such a terrible hotel . They are liars and irresponsible.

We booked this hotel through Travelocity. It was listed in Ponce, and as an ocean front hotel. After we got the rental car at 11pm, we had a hard time finding this hotel because the address is not good. We arrived at 2am and found roaches in the bed sheets, the fan was squeaky. There was no A/C, no phone, no TV. The windows were broken, and the sinks have stains. My husband was in line at the front desk, over heard someone said she had no hot water. Everyone at the front desk that morning wanted their money back. There was a framed note on the wall posting $150/room for high season, and $120/room for low season.

We stayed there for the better part of 2 days and nights. The staff was extremely professional and kind when tending to our needs. Location, location, location! When you have the ocean waves crashing in your backyard or to greet you every morning, what more can you ask? The breakfast offerings were more than adequate. Each greeting received from the staff always included a sincere smile. Even their willingness to do laundry for us added to the outstanding comfort we felt while there. I could have spent a week there. Thank you thank you thank you!

Room Tip: All rooms face the ocean. The place is genuine puerto Rico.
