“Very good location and value”
Reviewed 16 October 2013

This motel has an ideal location, right behind the bike lane and just a pleasant 15 minutes walk to downtown Magog. The owner is really nice and helpful with tips on what to do and visit in the area. The room itself was far more nicer than I thought it would be reading some other reviews: nice "champêtre" décor, very comfortable beds, a lot of storage and enough space for 4 adults (we booked the 2 double-beds room).
Also the garden is really nice and we took our morning coffee there under the sun... it was quite perfect for the price we paid!

My son had a soccer tournament in Magog and this was the only room available. That should have been my first clue. I paid $180, taxes in, for a 2 double bed room which was about $100+ more than it was worth. We arrived after 8pm and the reception was closed. There was a note on the reception door with my name on it saying that the room was open and the key was inside ( not exactly safe!). We walked right in.

The room décor was atrocious. It actually looked like I was bunking at grandma's house, with plastic fake flowers everywhere. The shower had no 'head' and was just a direct spray. I did not feel safe in this room at all. I kept waiting to have our room broken into. As mentioned by Carol D, the doors were the 'locking knob' type which made me feel uneasy. The a/c unit didn't work at 100% and the blinds were in the way. The beds were right beside the window and every time a car drove by, the lights shone right into our room.

We used the room to sleep, then left bright and early the next morning.

We had a Keurig machine in our room but no coffee or extras. Later, at check out, we discovered that coffee was in the office/closet. We could not find this private beach either. However, we drove about 2 mins and paid $8 to park our car at 'Stationnement Cabana' and enjoy the lake and 'boardwalk'.

The only positives about this motel was the great location and the bed was ok. Room was as clean as can be. Also good for families as there was a fridge, stove and dishes/cutlery supplied.

If you have no other options, staying here is not half bad but definitely look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Avoid room #1

bonjour,

I must commend their website designer, because Motel Fleur de Lys bears very little resemblance to the charming accommodations shown on its website (see our photos attached).
1. Check-in: The owner(?) speaks almost no English. After some pantomime, we were able to get a map of the area. We should have been tipped off about things to come when he handed us two Keurig coffee pods for the coffee machine in the kitchen. I guess we were supposed to get our own cream and sugar. We discovered upon check-out that there was coffee in the “lobby,” which was too small for 3 people to turn around in.
2. It does NOT have a water view. The location is good, but the water is almost a half mile away in either direction.
3. Breakfast is NOT complimentary. Although the website has a separate tab about breakfast, it is an extra $7 (continental) or $9 (egg/bacon sandwich). He said he’s not a restaurant, but will bring breakfast to you (huh?). If a motel mentions breakfast on their website they usually mean it’s included, like the other 6 motels in which we stayed during this trip. Otherwise, why mention it?
4. The “shop” is a couple of shelf units with products for sale, jammed into the very small office.
5. The “patio” is a bunch of tables that stick out into the parking lot.
6. The beach … yes, there is access nearly a half-mile away, walkable. The Memphre Club people go on the nicely manicured side, and the motel people go on the potholed, less manicured side. It’s clearly labeled and not that bad especially on a hot day. You get a key to the gate but you don’t get towels, although in the “Guest Services” book it says, quote: “The white towels, in the room, it’s only for your personal utility. For other uses, please come at the reception.” When I asked for towels, he said he doesn’t supply them because of the extra laundry required (makes me wonder about the sheets).
7. The room: Maybe we got the only room (#2) that hasn’t been remodeled since the 1970s. It was a very hot day and the a/c did work, but it was a loud window unit, not up around the ceiling but literally right next to the bed at bed level where you could bump it with your elbow, and mildewy-looking stuff around the vents. You couldn’t close the drapes without blocking the air, so we folded up the drapes and duct-taped them to the window to keep them shut. The door had a locking knob, but that’s it … no chain, no deadbolt. There was one lamp between the beds with a 40-watt bulb. Oh, yeah, and six candles on the table in front of the lamp. The only other light was in the kitchenette area 12 feet away in an alcove. We complained and the man came to our room and said, “You have light,” and we played charades with him to convince him to give us a 2nd lamp (had to take the black shade off so we could see). The bottom of the tub was scratched and scuffed and looked a little nasty, but everything seemed clean-ish. We didn’t use the decades-old kitchen.
It’s fairly obvious that not a nickel was spent that wasn’t absolutely necessary. It cost us $160 with taxes and wasn’t worth half of that. The only reason I’m giving two stars is that the bed was comfortable enough that I got 5 hours sleep, nothing bit us, and the location is good. I’d definitely visit Magog again, but would never stay here.

Room Tip: Don't take room #2.

oulalala!!!

Our room was equipped with a microwave, small fridge, coffee/tea machine, counter, two bar stools, sofa, coffee table, phone and TV. The owner, who is originally from France, was very friendly and gave us tea/coffee to make in our room. Our room was simply, but tastefully decorated with antique and rustic/country decor. The water pressure was excellent - this is an older hotel, but it's been renovated.
This hotel is conveniently located next to walking and cycling paths. It is within a short driving distance to grocery stores, shops and Lake Memphremagog; actually, it's also possible to walk to stores and the lake.

Room Tip: This hotel is also located within walking distance of "Le Marrais", a walking path which t...

Quiet and clean, limited services, nobody at the reception desk, you have to go and get the owner who was friendly and welcoming... We stayed in a recently renovated room, basic furniture but very comfortable bed. Smoke-free motel, good Wi-Fi. ideal for one night.
