“Excellent services and lodgings.”
Reviewed 30 October 2013

I rented my cottage at Spencer's Riverfront cottages for a long term stay while my mother was in palliative care. I cannot recommend this area enough! My cottage was beautiful and all amenities were top notch. The view on to the river was lovely. Chris and Lynne are excellent hosts, the grounds and cottages were clean, with comfortable beds and the free cable and wifi worked well. This area is world class known for it's fishing, and Chris is a seasoned fishing guide, with a fleet of various types of boats to rent. Staying for a long term, I met many generations of families from all over the world that are repeat costumers of Spencer's. For the fishing, the wonderful hospitality and the river front views. I have no complaints with Spencer's cottages and highly recommend staying here, wether for a week or long term. Thanks Lynne and Chris for your quality cottages and hospitality.

Room Tip: I stayed in number 8 cottage with a lovely view of the river and close to one of the many docks. It...

Rented 2 cottages - 3 bdrm and a 2 bdrm. Setting fairly nice Cottages were clean.

Owner very rude and demanding. Over charge for nominal things like BBQ charcoal ( bring your own!!!). Eg. Will shut down wifi if you use it too much. Water smells awful!!! Sulphur like. You smell all day after a shower!

3 bdrm -newer. No air conditioning, no screen doors, so either bugs or heat are an issue

2 bdrm old and unlevel. Feel like you'll fall down walking around the place. Poorly laid out. According to website Beds are new but must be really cheap as they are bad! Things are just old and need repair.

Owner actually had the nerve to email a nasty letter to me complaining about leaving some empty water bottles, food and a few dishes in sink. Apparently you are supposed to clean the cottage yourself after paying over $1300 for 5 nights! ( keep in mind there is no maid service all week and you have to pay extra for old towels and sheets on the bed) As well they make you check out by 10am and checkin after 4pm. And are not too accommodating if you need something after 7pm.

We realize that this client did not understand what "housekeeping cottages " were when they rented the cottages. This client was a professional golfer playing in a tournament at a nice new golf coarse near-by. He had arranged for 7 to 9 golfers to stay several days, as it was alot less expensive than staying at the hotel associated with the golf coarse, or other hotels around the area. The only problem was, they didn't really want to stay at "housekeeping cottages ". They came to the office store 2 hours after it was closed looking for charcoal. We openned up, but they did not bring any money to purchase the charcoal with, we gave them the charcoal and told them to come by tommorrow when we were open to pay. They never came back to pay. The last day of their stay we had to knock on the door and ask them to vacate as it was 2 hours after the check-out time and we had cleaned all of the other cottages already. We also asked that they settle their bill in the office as they left. The cottages were left in an unacceptable state. There were dishes piled high, food left un-eaten on them, garbage on the floor. It was such a mess that I did write an e-mail to express my disappointment.
This was a mistake as this review was written "in spite " because of the e-mail.
We are a housekeeping cottage resort. We offer very reasonalable prices for those who would like to bring their own boat, or rent a boat, and fish or boat in the 1000 Islands.
"Housekeeping " means the client keeps house. The cottages are cleaned and made up between each rental. There is no daily maid service. They can cook their own meals, docking and launch ramp are included for free with the cottage rental. Most of our clients are fishermen, and most are repeat clients. We pride ourselves on clean and safe cottages.
Since this client was not interested in fishing, boating, or anything about "housekeeping" cottages, they should have paid the much higher prices and stayed elseware.
If you have a boat and are looking for clean, safe cottages at a reasonable price, please look us up, we would love to have you stay and fish the 1000 Islands.

I am writing this to counter the last review, since we were there at the same exact time as them. We didn't rent a boat, but most of the other guests did, and they all seemed quite happy. Many had been coming back to Spencer's for years, which says something.

We stayed in the one bedroom cottage for a week. The weekly rate, including tax and linens, came out to be less than $100 per day. The place was very clean and also quite small, but we didn't expect a mansion...it's a vacation cottage! The kitchen was cramped but totally functional and I cooked a lot. I found the beds to be comfortable. The cable TV had tons of channels and there was wireless internet. The grounds were clean and the view was spectacular. The owners were courteous and didn't interfere with us at all. All the guests were quiet and respectful and friendly.

If you are looking for modern luxury accommodations, then spend the money on them! Spencer's is a great deal for the price, which made it affordable for us to go away for a week as a family. Yes, the cottages are old, but this is part of the charm. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was the lack of air conditioning and a pool. We are too used to air conditioning at home so being without it is difficult for us. But, half the nights were pretty cool outside and the breeze through the cottage made it tolerable. A pool would have been great, but nearby Gananoque does have a swimming beach.

Compared to several other places we haves stayed as a family, I would say this was, by far, the best for the price.

Room Tip: Get the weekly rate.

Reviewed 22 July 2012

We rented a 2bedroom cottage for 2 days starting july 18, 2012. This place has 5 or 6 similar cottages, all build in the 70s according to a worker who was repairing the rotten wood structure. The cottage we stayed in has 2 small rooms, a kitchen equipped with a gas stove, a fridge, a toaster but no microwave. There is also a very small area about 12 by 6 ft with a sofa a tv and a dinner table with 2 chairs. Every thing is quite old. The bed are comfortable.

We pay 170$ a day for the cottage and also rent a motor boat for which we pay 140$ a day. But there is a catch. The owner told us that we have to return the boat on the second day at 5pm unless we pay for another half a day if we want to fish late into the evening. As the fishing is best at dawn and dust, we reluctantly paid the extra amount. Now best part is she told us that even if their website advertises a free gas tank is included with every one day rental that applies only if we use the boat from 8:00am till 5:00pm. Otherwise guests have to pay for a second tank of gas (40$). We felt we were trapped because we believe too much in the web ad of Spencer's Boat and Lodge Rental. The boat has a old 2cycle 25hp motor.

Even this property sits on a small bay, the bay is very dirty with lots of weed. After 2 days of fishing almost every corner within a 5 miles radius, i can tell that the area has no bass at all, we caught many yellow perches and a pike but that's it. We also saw a couple catching a walleye at 80 ft dip. May be Gananoque area has bass years before but they seem to not exist now.

I will never return again to Spencer's Boat and Lodge Rental.

S.L

Room Tip: There are many hotel and inn with much better value around

We are sad that this client did not catch the fish they were expecting. The St. Lawrence River and the 1000 Islands area is world known for the fishing. There are many bass tournaments held in the area each year. The last world record muskie was caught only minutes from us in 2008. Our office closes at 6pm each night so we can have supper and go to bed as we are back at work by 7 am to have the office open at 8 am. If a client wants to keep a boat longer than 5 pm, they pay an additional charge, and we will check the boat in by 9 or 10 am the next day, This provides the client with many additional hours to fish in the evening and again in the morning. But we do not provide many extra hours of use on the boat and motor for free, we have a fee. This client was mistaken about the gas with the boat rentals. We provide one free tank of gas with the boat rental, not each day, so they would not have recieved a second free tank of gas. We do offer gas for sale, for their convenience, or they can take the portable gas tank to town and fill it there. The gas we have on the property costs more than the gas in town as we have a private tank that we pay a higher price to have filled. It is more of a convenience for us and for the client.
We encourage this client and anyone else not to give up on fishing. It is a great past-time. It isn't something that is going to happen right away. Fishing is a skill... but it will come. We will provide fishing advice and tips as we fish ourselves. We sell the Ontario hunting and fishing licenses and have a small tackle store. Consider taking one of our guided fishing tours. We can show you some spots and some techniques for the area.
We offer housekeeping cottages and boat rentals, or bring your own boat, we have a launch ramp and docking that are free with the cottage rental. Boat license NOT required for the rental boats.

We stayed in the 3 bedroom cottage (I thought of them as bungalows since I stayed in the Catskills Mountains as a child for the summer) with 6 adults and 1 toddler. Beautiful views of the water and clean. The 3 bedroom needs updating (which will be done soon). The two bedroom that I took a look at was done very well with an amazing view of the water. Overall, if you are into fishing this is a great place to be, as it is right on the water in a quiet area of the St.Lawrence. If you are not, this is still a great place to stay, you can rent a boat for the day (with a %20 discount) or drive/bike into Gananoque only 3 miles away. Kingston is about 15-20 miles west and it is fairly easy to get to the 401 (Canada's version of the Interstate).
