French's Refreshment Booth
Ranked #42 of 162 Restaurants in Orillia
Restaurant details
Reviewed 1 September 2013 via mobile

I've been coming into Orillia, by boat or by car, for over thirty years. I go into Orillia, many times JUST to go to French's.

What's not to like? The food is good(it IS a hamburger stand, afterall), it's a historical site(and bright yellow at that) and allows one to connect to the simple life, ties in well with the waterfront and even has tables used by Stephen Leacock, Orillia's famous humorist.

The student servers are pleasant and helpful, the shakes are thick and great and you'll never see a larger two scoop ice cream cone than here! I like the food and fries as well.

If French's should happen to disappear, through lack of foresight by town council, it'll only mean that I have one less reason to visit your town.

Allow the past to stand and continue serving the present. I'd miss my time sitting at the tables, while looking out over the lake.

I know where to find Starbucks and high rise condos; that's not why I come here. This is unique.

It's a destination!

Hopefully, you won't "know what
you've got 'til it's gone."

The land Frenchies is on is owned by the city of Orillia. It was leased to the French family for a period of years and that lease is up. The city has deemed that Frenchies will be demoloshied or moved. But if it is moved it will be demolished. It has been where it is for over 80 years. We all have memories of going there. There was a petition last summer to save Frenchies and have it deemed a Historical building but it didnt go through. Please write letters to The Packet and Times Paper. So everyone knows how much this landmark means to all of us

this waterfront landmark has good food..fries are great, burgers, dogs. Sadly, I hear their lease is not being renewed, and the building has been deemed not saveable in its current condition.. and once they are closed the City has plans for that part of the waterfront. it will be torn down.....too many amusement parks and shacks like this have disappeared in favour of waterfront development and fast food chains. get some pics while you can...this old institution has many memories for people ....won't be around too much longer

This place has been here for 80 years and is a cultural icon to Orillia. It is however in need of some renovations and the food should be a lot better considering its presence in the park. The food is average with a few really good items. Makes me think the owners have no interest in the place or perhaps it doesn't make enough money to justify improvements. Improving the food would not be difficult though it would just require some effort, I think this place deserves that. That being said, going there is as much about the experience of enjoying a day in the park on a summer day.
