Kingsbrae Arms
Ranked #8 of 13 Saint Andrews B&B and Inns
Reviewed 27 August 2012

The Kingsbrae Arms is as close as you will come to an English country house weekend in Atlantic Canada. If you've watched a Miss Marple movie or read some P. G. Wodehouse then you'll recognize the elements: a beautiful property with lots of character, an elaborate garden on the grounds, diverse guests dining together every night, and professional staff who will cater to any request.

Dinner is an experience of its own. Put yourself in the capable hands of the Chef and enjoy several courses of locally-sourced food -- some of it grown on the premises -- served over two or three hours. If you order a bottle of wine (from the terrific wine list) you can be sure that it will be expertly served so that it lasts the length of the meal.

The rooms are unique, and pleasantly free of the trappings of a more commercial hotel -- not even a rate card on the back of the door. It really is like staying in a large house with discreet and capable staff. They'll clean your room while you're at breakfast, and turn down your bed while you're at dinner.

This was our second stay to celebrate our anniversary, and we certainly intend to make a tradition of it.

Enjoying our first vacation in Canada, we booked this place while looking for a relais-chateau and staid there for three nights in july/august. Knowing this places from France and Switzerland, our expectation were very high.
We were lucky to get a suite and we enjoyed it from the very first moment. The place is very quite, spacious, well furnished and very comfortable. The breakfast served in the garden is just the best way to start your day, fresh fruits, toasted bread - yes, real bread - and just a beautiful and relaxing view. One morning I even had the opportunity to talk a few words with the owner, I immediatly felt that this man likes people to be happy in his place.

First we did not want to have diner there, but then - thanks god - we decided to eat there for two nights. Starting with a special taste of local caviar, we went from one overwhelming surprise to another, feeling just like if Bocuse himself was in the kitchen. We just did'nt expect such great food at this place. What Guillaume Delaune proposed was a really top experience. And he still is a 'normal person' you can talk to, next morning he invited us to visit his garden where all the fine herbs are coming from. Where else on earth will you find a chef like this?

Now some people have complained here about the price. Well, this is probably not the place to look for if you are used to eat at mc donald or if you mostly stay at motels. However: I prefer to pay more and enjoy more, as long as what you get is worth your money. And this was definitively the case.

We are now booking a fifth trip to stay at this wonderful Hotel in September 2012, an establishment without doubt well worthy of its membership of the Relais & Chateau organization, and we're amazed to read some of the recent reviews.

We were only at the Hotel in May this year and as ever enjoyed fantastic hospitality from excellent and enthusiastic staff who were all hospitality professionals. We cannot speak too highly of the culinary delights that will await you at the Kingsbrae Arms. Dinners are marvelous, with great preparation, presentation and variation that are on a par or better than any fine dining restaurant anywhere in North America or Europe. The rooms are excellent and very much in keeping with a first class private manor house type hotel. And then there is it's own beautiful garden and of course that of the Kingsbrae Gardens, open to the public, next door. Harry Chancey, the owner, is a fine hotelier who has a genuine interest in the comfort and well being of his guests. Kingsbrae Arms is certainly up there as wonderful place to stay and St Andrews on Sea is a great place to visit.

Room Tip: We have stayed in a number of different rooms and all have been lovely.

When we first arrived (in mid-August) at the height of the tourist season and found this hotel almost empty, I suspected something was wrong. After the problems of my two-day stay in a "junior suite" I discovered why so few people were coming to this Relais & Chateaux hotel. Our $545/night room had a small window air-conditioner that was noisy. The tiny, antiquated TV was located in the armory without a comfortable place to watch it, but that didn't matter since the cable malfunctioned most of the time anyway. The shower was so small I could barely fit in it, and I'm not overweight. But the thing that was truly annoying is that none of the rooms have phones, so if one wants something from the staff one must go downstairs to find an employee. The location next to the Kingsbrae Garden is the only selling point for this very expensive hotel. The evening before we left I told the manager of my disappointment with the hotel, something I had never done before at any of the "fine" hotels we have ever stayed at. He called the owner, and he agreed to give me a small discount, an amount that I considered woefully inadequate. This hotel is staffed by a coterie of 20-year old kids on summer vacation from college who displayed very little experience, something one would not expect at a "fine" hotel. By the way, breakfast is not included in the $545 room charge--it is $35/person extra. We stayed in Banff National Park at the Chateux Lake Louise in a room with a view of the lake and glacier for much less than the price of this silly imitation of a fine hotel.

Kingsbrae Arms a rip-off? Not to countless guests who have enjoyed our hospitality, food & peaceful surroundings for the last 16 years. I can't let that charge go unchallenged.

The dust hadn’t settled on the gravel drive this morning when this review hit Trip Advisor. Apparently our departing guest was in a hurry to get this posted. Odd, because these guests waited until the very last minute to register their dissatisfaction when we were absolutely powerless to do anything, except of course make a rate adjustment, which we did. More on that later. For now, the record.

Kingsbrae Arms is not empty and we are currently enjoying our most robust season in several years since the recession hit hard. The room, which these guests booked online, is described thus: “Spacious air-conditioned guest rooms [350sf+] with lovely fireplace sitting area, king size bed, marble appointed bathroom with soaker tub and shower. Peaceful phone-free environments with unlimited WiFi and Satellite TV for those who must stay in touch…”

Phone-free means just that. Phone-free. Guilty as charged. Everything else was delivered. The marble appointed bathroom has an oversize neo-angle shower and separate historic cast iron soaker tub. The air conditioner is brand new, energy efficient, whisper quiet and only necessary during extreme heat spells which we have not been experiencing. Yes, the satellite TV is tucked away in an armoire as a design choice to remove its presence from the room. No one has ever complained about this discreet placement in the past.

Finally, Kingsbrae Arms is not staffed by “kids on summer vacation from college”. We are staffed by young management graduates and professionals from the finest hospitality schools in Canada. All of them. And they are unsettled by this attack on their professionalism. They are not “kids on summer vacation from college.”

So back to the “small discount.” To make up for these belated and in some cases specious criticisms, we reduced the room rate 33% and removed the breakfast charge with our compliments. Obviously that wasn’t enough. In the future, we will carefully evaluate remuneration of any kind in the face of this kind of baseless criticism.

We had a wonderful time here. The accommodations were gorgeous, the service and the staff were so kind and the food was fabulous. Next door is the Kingsbrae Garden which I can highly recommend. There is whale watching that will not disappoint and a lovely, lovely town.

Room Tip: Bring body lotion! Very odd that they don't provide, but they don't.

I am about to recommend the Kingsbrae Arms to my colleague at work and was curious about the recent reviews. I was really surprised at the review dated June 8th by 732Joe. My wife and I arrived early on a Friday evening (June 1st) with no reservation, totally out of the blue. They welcomed us with open arms and did everything they could to meet our needs. Little did they know that I wanted to surprise my wife with their tasting menu for her birthday. It was out of this world and the dinner has become a life-time memory. The staff were great and very professional. We stayed two nights and I would not hesitate to return. I shall certainly be recommending the inn to my colleague.

We decided to take a relaxing drive up the Maine coast for our summer vacation. At the last minute we rearranged our timetable to include crossing the border to the Canadien town of St. Andrews By The Sea. The attractions were the opportunity to go whale watching and the luxury small chateau inn called Kingsbrae Arms, (which was recommended by Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report).
This is a gorgeous old world antique filled small hotel, perhaps under 20 rooms and suites. We were upgraded to a king bedroom suite which included a large balcony overlooking their gardens and pool, a separate sitting room and a huge marble bathroom. The manager Pamela had been in contact with us several times after our booking to assure we could make the most of our stay and she was an absolute pleasure to deal with. The owner Harry was on premises and came by to chat. All staff were courteous and accommodating.Well in advanced of arrival we were asked to let them know of any food allergies or diet requests. You can book just the room or "half board" which includes breafast and dinner.
If you are making the trip do not hesitate for a second, take the half board option because the chef Guillaume Delaune would be a major draw in any city on this planet. His multi course dinners were exquisite. My husband and I are New Yorkers who have many opportunites to dine at all types of restaurants with excellent cuisine. This chef stands out. My husband and I have different food allergies and each course was custom tweaked to our situation. Presentation, portion and creative flair made for remarkable dining in their beautiful lord and lady of the manor type dining room. As for breakfast, we made sure to request his smoked salmon and sturgeon on the side. My husband visit ed the chef's smoker located just off the garden. Beyond the hotel, a catamaran took a group of 35 people out into the Bay of Fundy and I can still see the 60 foot fin back whale that surfaced just next to our boat. The adjacent Kingsbrae Gardens were lovely to stroll in. Border crossing was easy and fast in such a small local.
