“Talent in the making, many Artist”

The Old Schoolhouse Arts Centre
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 25 November 2013

This Heritage school house has been transformed into a Art gallery and there is a group of Artists that do there work there, who you can be approached and they will answer your questions. Musical performances are also done there throughout the year. There's a gift store of something for almost everyone.

My husband and I can easily spend two hours here exploring the art and talking to the people who work here.

The Arts Centre provides gallery space on the main level (there are usually one or two major shows in progress). The gallery isn't huge but what's on offer is diverse. On the lower level, there are resident artist studios--everything from watercolours, acrylics, oils, silversmithing, photography to pottery. Several artists may share one studio and typically one artist is on hand to discuss his or her work. We have been to the Schoolhouse at least four times (over the course of many years) and each time have been amazed by the talent represented. One of our favourite things to do is talk to the artists to learn of their inspiration and creative process. What a special privilege. And because they live in the area, they are goldmines of information about special places to visit. Joan Larson, famed for her horse portrayals (RCMP Musical Ride and Sable Island horses) may even be in residence when you drop by. Famous or not, everyone has a special story to share.

There is a gift shop on site that offers a wide range of works, including those from non-resident artists (carvings, jewelry, glassworks). Prices range from a few dollars to thousands.

As a visitor to the area you can learn so much about the people who work, play and create here. And the Centre is housed in a beautifully restored schoolhouse. Concerts are also offered but we've not been fortunate to be here at the right time.
