“Fabulous Wedding at Sooke Harbour House”
Reviewed 7 February 2006

Just wanted to post a review of the Sooke Harbour House after reading some previously negative reviews.

We were married there September 2nd 2005 and our experience was magical and fantastic.

Our experience with the staff, everyone from the special events co-ordinators to their service staff, was excellent. We found they even bent over backwards to aid us in creating our own unique, personal wedding ceremony and reception that was reflective of our personalities.

The grounds are lovely with gardens in full bloom overlooking the ocean with an Olympic Mountain backdrop. As a wedding ceremony spot,it was magical for it's intimacy and beauty. As a getaway "sit spot" it's serene.

As far as the restaurant is concerned, I can only say that our dinner was fabulous. A truely extraordinary experience! Salads are made with edible flowers from their gardens that burst with color and pleasing flavors. The following courses were so artfully presented with stunning creativity and composition, it almost seemed a shame to dig in, but OHHHH, when you did!

The Sooke Harbour House delights the senses visually not only through it's lovely natural surroundings, the entire Inn and it's rooms are adorned with works by local artists, making every room unique. We spent our wedding night in room 5 (if you can call it a room...more like an appartment) and the details in the room are gorgeous. Views from the rooms are stunning!

We had the most wonderful experience there and I would reccomend it to anyone considering the Sooke Harbour House for a wedding, but also for anyone craving a little slice of heaven.

We planned a trip to the Pacific Northwest for a delayed honeymoon. We knew it might be the rainy season but wanted some real relaxed times so we included a 3 night stay on Vancouver Island at the Sooke Harbour House on a recommendation from a friend.

After going up on their web site, and chosing the dates, the most difficult decision was selecting one of the 6 of 28 rooms available. Each room is decorated around a theme and I spent many hours on the web site visiting each one. They all have hot tubs either in the room or on the private deck, some have steam showers and they all have fireplaces. After several phone calls with the most helpful staff, we settled on Room 5 and scheduled massages for the day of our arrival.

Getting to Vancouver Island was an easy ferry ride from Friday Harbor, San Juan Island on a well run and inexpensive ferry and about a half hour drive from Victoria.

Outside, the Inn was tastefully decorated for the season and inside, on every available space throughout, were pieces of art, paintings, weavings and sculptures, from local artists. One could spend hours viewing the art and checking out the cozy library on the 2nd floor. I even wished for bad weather so I didn't have to leave the Inn even though there is so much to see and do outside.

Our room was spectacular. Very large with a view of the Wiffen Spit and sound from both our bed and living room. Our steam shower was encased in stained glass and from our hot tub we could see both the fireplace and the view of the ocean. (On the day of our departure we viewed 4 other rooms, all of them unique and we would have been happy in any of them). We had time for a quick walk and then settled down for massages in our room. The therapists were so good, we booked hot rock massages, reflexology and facials for the next morning which were fantastic.

Dinner was extraordinary. Everything on the menu was organic, local and regional. We had three dinners there, all four courses from a limited menu and each dish demanded attention from all our senses. The dining room was tastfully set up and it included a couch and sitting area in front of a large fire.
Each meal was a full evening culinary experience and the staff was friendly and very professional. It is family owned and run and they obviously know how to please people and have kept their high standards.

The wine list was extensive and carefully selected from around the world, including a large selection of Canadian wines.

We went on the garden tour offered each morning and learned about the herbs. plants and seeds used to flavor our food and the whole organic process. In the summers, you can go on a seaweed harvest which is used by the kitchen and by a local person who makes spa products from it.

We have never been to a place which rates so highly in all areas. Our total experience will long be remembered and we plan to return yearly. It's a great place for couples, families and friends to get away and feel totally taken care of.
I encourage everyone to check it out. Off season is Oct.1-April 30th and they offer specials during those months.

Photos and lots of information on their web site:

What a fantastic room for part of our honeymoon!(July 2005) We stayed in the Sea Song room with a huge double bed, a great balcony with sea views, a jazuzzi bath, a sofa and log fire place which despite it being July we still lit! There is plenty attention to detail to make this a unique hotel with each room having individual character. BUT as for the restaurant..... beware if you taste buds like to have some sort of idea what you are eating. There were too many small courses we had which were overly complex and confusing in taste! They also stretch the dining experience over 2 hours from starter to dessert. You start to get impatient waiting for the next course although you recognise this is the way it is done with such posh food. The wine is very expensive. It was amusing to see another couple who were also a bit over whelmed with the experience and didnt seem to be having much 'fun'!

The meal was by far the most expensive we had on our honeymoon (and we werent cutting back at other places!) Whilst the room & the grounds were totally lovely, if we go again we will NOT be eating at the restaurant.

We stayed for two nights, The meals were delicious and fascinating in part because of their dedication to using superb local ingredients. The service was careful, gracious and good humored. Perhaps in light of a couple of recent reviews I should simply say it was all flawless. Sooke Harbour House has a beauty and spirit about it that I can only describe as restorative and I hope to enjoy it again.

I agree with the London visitor to Sook Harbour House dining. This place was less than average in quality of food and service and above average in $.

We went there to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. First of all, we had to wait for our table even though we had reservations. The propietor treated us as though we were children. We're in our 30s and although we look young, it was surprising that she had the attitude she had. Then, the food was just ok. For how expensive it is, it should be more than just ok. The service was mediocre. The wait staff (which included the propietor) were lacking in any warmth, energy, or desire to make this restaurant anything beyond 3 stars as far as service. Also, please pay attention to the fact that the menu is pre-fixed Sun-Thurs.

I hope this helps some of you who may be looking for a special dining experience. Find another restaurant!

We have just returned from an amazing 3 week holiday in BC and Alberta, the only disappointment on our trip was dinner at Sooke Harbour House but boy was it a big one! From the UK we read all the great publicity for Sooke Harbour House and foolishly fell for it.
Yes the room (Ravens Nest) was good although we did have to carry our own bags to it. Problems started when we arrived at dinner for our 8pm booking with our 3 kids (12,10 & 8). We were told that our table would not be ready "for some time" so, a bit annoyed, we took a stroll around the garden, 15 mins later our table was no nearer and other diners were being similarly treated. No account was taken of the children at all. Eventually after complaining loudly to the owner we finally sat down at 9pm. Clearly SHH try to squeeze in two sittings for dinner and it just doesn't work. For us by then the damage was done - the kids nearly fell asleep in their supper and retired to bed after we had eaten our starters - not exactly the family celebration we had in mind. We were finally done at 12.30am...

This was the most expensive and least enjoyable meal we have had in Canada or London ever. Of course we should have been alerted - before dinner I asked for 2 glasses of champagne to be delivered to our room - I was offered sparkling wine as the champagne is "rather expensive"! Should have wised up though because we were charged C$60 for 2 small glasses of REAL champagne!!

Prices and reputation for Sooke Harbour House just don't add up. Even our local C$20 (equiv) a head bistro can do better. Shame on the owners and to others BEWARE!

What a Sea-sational delight I experienced at the Sooke Harbour House. I entrusted them with my stay, and they far exceeded my expectations. They shared freely their expertise and passion for this natural paradise, helping expand my palate to the new delights of the regional cuisine and fabulous wines, and guiding me to the various hidden treasures Sooke has to offer.
I was deliciously surprised how expertly the Chefs transformed my magnificent view and aroma of the gardens, lush herbs, edible flowers, and the sea artfully onto my plate, merging nature’s beauty and elegance from outside to in. This is truly a romantic delight for your senses.
Just breath deeply, enjoy the extensive wine list, savor artfully prepared culinary creations, soak on your private terrace with the sounds of the gentle waves interrupted only by the crackling of the fire, and prepare to be pleasantly spoiled.
Thank you to everyone at Sooke Harbour House-you touch the earth lightly and it has rewarded you with unmatched beauty.
