Summer is not complete without several visits to Smokin Tuna. Usually we order the signature dish because the panko crusted tuna is just so good, but the most recent visit gave us the opportunity to try panko crusted calamari strips served with a mild curry aoli. Only caveat, there is nothing served with the calamari and a small side salad would have been welcome. Also enjoyed at other visits, the roasted vegetable Panini, the Gold soup (22 carrots!). The house made ice cream sampler was a real treat, fennel, garlic, peanut butter and orange ices were the four choices on this recent visit. We took a friend from Phoenix to share one of our favourite places and she was duly impressed. On a hot summer day their house made lemonade is a good way to cool off while you sit on the patio enjoying the scenery and the thoroughly entertaining seals in the water in front of you.

Food was very tasty, fresh and was a lovely place to sit and have lunch looking out over the bay with boats and seals. However, the owner was not exactly welcoming and at one point asked (in front of us) if we had paid so that he could close up. This was at 4pm on a day when the restaurant was advertised as open all evening. So, we won't be back - a shame, as it has such potential.

Fried tuna? Why does a place that is right on a dock - fantastic view and outdoor dining area - serve so little fish? And why would you hide it in breadcrumbs and fry it? That said lunch was pretty good. Our wraps were fresh, the veggies crisp and right out of the garden I suspect. Lighten up on the 'special sauce' chef, your cooking is just fine without bathing everything in mayo. Super lemonade!

Smoking Tuna should be called amazing tuna, because their fried tuna encrusted in panko breadcrumbs is nothing short of amazing! I stopped eating tuna years ago and made an exception last night. I may make an exception one more time before we leave East
Sooke. The other amazing thing is the view. It is as good as any
view anywhere. You are literally right on the water and if you dine outside, which we did, you won't want to leave. This is a casual restaurant with not so casual prices and a very small menu, but with that said, the food is wonderful as is the setting!

My husband and I had dinner here. Perhaps lunch would have been a better experience. However, the dinner fell far short of a.good dining experience, let alone the price of $19 per entree. I had the carrot soup and chicken in beurre blanc. The carrot soup was fine, although no bread was served or offered . When requested, I was given a slice of "focaccia" which tasted like something out of a bin at Safeway. No oil or butter, just a slab of bad bread. The chicken dish was flavorless, although well cooked. That is, the chicken was tender enough, but the sauce did nothing to highlight or accent the cut. The grilled side vegetables were red pepper and zucchini slices in oil. My husband had tuna in panko crust, which was well cooked. However, it came with a side of plain white rice and the same grilled vegetables as In my dish. Yes, the view is wonderful, but you're going there to eat. And it did not live up to its promise, it's venue nor its prices.
