“IN NEED OF RENOVATION. GOOD LOCATION”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

It is an average hotel. The rooms are confortable and well equipped but they are outdated. They could be cleanier. This hotel must be renovated and especially the bathrooms. Note that the toilet seat is very small so that bigger people will be very annoyed by this. The parking is very small and not fit for large vehicule. Nobody was available for bringing my luggage to my room.

The hotel is located directly across from a Park with nice views of the Ottawa River to the East. Having said that, other areas immediately around the hotel seem, well, pretty run-down. Fortunately, the weather was wonderful whilst I was there AND I love to walk. If the weather doesn't cooperate, or, you don't want to walk, you will be taking cabs. And, cabs aren't lined up outside this hotel. You'll have to ask the front desk to reserve one for you when you wish to go out.

As many people visiting Ottawa/Gatineau, I was there to meet with an arm of the Canadian Government which is, largely, housed at Place du Portage, a complex in Gatineau second only to the U.S. Pentagon in terms of size. Place du Portage (Phase IV) is about a 15 minute walk from the hotel. I enjoyed the walk each morning and evening. But, where to go each night for dinner??

As I learned checking in on my first day from the front desk, there's a Thai restaurant and a McDonald's near the hotel. Otherwise, take the nearby walking/biking/driving bridge across the Ottawa River to the Byward Market area of Ottawa adjacent to the U.S. Embassy. It's a 20+ minute walk each way, there and back. I loved it, but, again, the weather was fantastic when I was there. There are literally dozens of restaurants in the Byward Market area.

Now, as for the hotel. It's clean, but quite old and needs renovation to move beyond "average." Bed was comfortable. Pillows are hard and short. There were 3 bath towels which are only slightly larger than hand towels and are rough to the touch. The shampoo, conditioner and skin lotion were low quality. Housekeeping never replaced the shampoo during the 3 nights I was there. There's a coffee maker with a coffee pod, no bottled water (and no gift shop to purchase any from) and powdered creamer. The TV was an LG. The cable stations were (not surprisingly) mostly french speaking, with 2 Detroit stations and CNN, otherwise, virtually all religious or cartoons. Reception was spotty and interrupted with "no signal" several times. I never ate dinner at the hotel. There's a breakfast buffet for $7.99 (with tax, but not tip) with coffee, eggs, toast, sausages, cereal, an orange drink of some sort, some off the shelf cheeses and what looked to be mixed fruit from a can.

If you like to walk and the weather cooperates, it's an ok hotel. If you don't, or, you're concerned about the weather, there are hotels closer to Place du Portage in Gatineau and closer to the Byward Market area in Ottawa that you may want to consider. Au revoir!

I stayed for business trip in downtown Ottawa and I know the traffic at the Alexandria bridge is a morning nightmare. the location of the hotel is strategic for good 10-15min walk with beautiful scenery of Parliament building and of course a mind-free-stuck in the traffic.

the price for a night is reasonable (we got a small room at the corner with big window at awkward height ( I am short) for that reason I gave a 4-star but I stayed just to sleep and its location.

the wifi was fast and good and free.

Room Tip: the parking is $10 but I would suggest if the front parking is full, check in and get the parking ti...

The hotel is right across the river from Ottawa. The view from the 9th floor was spectacular. The service was excellent, the staff at the front desk spoke English to me and the breakfast was fine. The parking is outdoors but right in front of the hotel so there is easy access. Basically, I liked the place and would stay again.

Room Tip: Bed was really comfortable. Lots of channels in English and French.

VERY clean! Reasonable. Great location. Great views on river side (front). Fantastic, congenial but unobtrusive staff. Unfortunately with health fiasco with youngest grandson did not get to try pool. Staff accommodating and smiling. Location -near Museum of Civilization, Jacques Cartier Park and Cartier Bridge - which leads to Byward Market area, National Gallery and Parliament Hill. Thank you Best Western!

This location was a last minute pick and check in for my elderly parents and I, as we hadn't expected to sleep in Ottawa while passing by. But I was thoroughly surprised with the cleanliness for this place's price. Front building may not look as extravagant, compared to other hotel brands. But for the cheap price, friendly staff, cleanliness of the room (key for me), free amenities... I'd book again!

A two-night stay Tuesday and Wednesday, February 25-26, 2014. We made the trip from Michigan to meet a longtime friend and her husband, as they made the trip from France for their son's hockey tournament.

By good fortune, we were able to secure a two-night rate promotion, which meant our room was about $125 per night ... a fair price for a metropolitan area. We saw no prejudice for being English-speaking and for being Americans. In fact, the staff from check in to check out was courteous beyond words.

The room showed some wear but we are not hotel snobs, so it was easy to overlook the minor flaws. The fact our bathroom door in room 229 had a hard time shutting was our biggest problem speaks well to the great stay. Strange zoning in this town, as the hotel is surrounded by residential areas, still walking distance to a few restaurants and attractions. HDTV was awesome.

There was a fee of about $7 or $8 for breakfast buffet, but that expense was offset by free parking! What a joy to not get screwed to pay for parking at a hotel, a common practice in most larger cities. The fact that they have free parking on its own would bring me back.

We didn't spend much time in the room, so the bland view from the back of the hotel was not a big deal. We had a chance to stay in a higher-level room facing the river, but we wanted to be on the same floor as our friends.

There are nicer hotels in the area, but there is no nicer staff. Kudos to everyone there for making our Canadian vacation an enjoyable experience. And we REALLY appreciated the recommendation to "La Pataterie Hulloise" for the best burger in the area. It is a very unassuming place we never would have found or considered, but no doubt the best hamburgers in Quebec. Should have ordered two.

Wow!! Thank you for your amazing review. And WOW your friends and their son came all the way to Canada to play hockey? No wonder you ventured up to the cold North for the tournament that’s a pretty amazing opportunity.
I have passed your feedback to the team; they really appreciated your comments, made their day. Our team is mostly bilingual; some are stronger in their second language than others, having English speaking guests gives them practice.
You loved the HDTV in the rooms, so do I; we strongly felt that clients deserved the upgraded service. Next time your travels bring you to Ottawa, make sure you book the river view room, the view is spectacular.
Once again, on behalf our entire team, that you for taking the time to write about your positive experiences with us and we hope to see you soon.
