“Ski in-out”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 February 2014

We arrived in Fernie and discovered we were a 10 minute drive to the hill so decided to check the handful of accommodations at the bottom of the hill. We were lucky enough to find a few reasonable priced rooms with a great view at the Slopeside. The room had basic furnishings with rooms recently painted and some new furnishings. There was a mini fridge and coffee maker however no microwave. If you feel the need to warm up food there is a communal microwave in the lounge. Rooms were clean and bathrooms had been updated. There is no restaurant in the lodge itself but you will find a Kelsey's a few minutes walk away in the building next door. There is no pool and the 2 hot tubs are only opened late in the afternoon. This room could use a bit of cleaning and perhaps new tiled floors and a bit of paint. All and all, for the money we paid and the time spent in the room, the Slopeside is an ok place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 3rd floor facing the mountain.

Having read other reviews I felt I had to add my own.
Late arrivals will need check in at the nearby Lizard Creek hotel as the reception closes at 8pm for the slope side.
The rooms were warm, clean and a good size, we had a family room for 2 of us. A nice size clean bathroom shower over bath with plenty clean towels supplied.
TV tea and coffee making in the room with a small fridge in the room.
A 1st floor lounge area has tea and coffee on the go all day and the use of a microwave is available here.
Ground floor lounge has a TV and comfy chairs and sofas.
On the whole I found the Slope Side lodge, welcoming, friendly, warm and comfortable. The staff are all great and willing to help. The rooms are cleaned on request and all bedding and towels were excellent.
Walk out ski in on the hill was fantastic, a short less than 5 mins to the hill and lifts, ski all the way to the door, lockers in the lower ground floor for all rooms, with great access.
Hot tubs 2 on the lower floor were clean and very welcome sight at the end of the day, extra towels supplied here to, also 2 showers for pre bathing shower.
Convenience store right next door with all daily needs catered for.

Room Tip: Book early for family room, lower ground floor rooms are pet friendly!!!

Also known as Fernie Slopeside Lodge, which confused my internet research. The lodge is basic, but provides all the necessities for a ski-holiday. It does not have any restaurants or pubs, but there are more than enough to choose from within 500m from there. You get a comfortable room with bath tub / shower, TV, coffee machine, as well as a ski locker, use of two hot tubs, plus ice machine and a micro-wave in the lounge area.

Previous commenters mentioned dirty bedding, rooms not cleaned, etc, but during our stay there were a swarm of cleaners, our room and bedding were clean, front desk was present, requests promptly attended, so maybe they have acted on the negative comments. I also agree with previous commenter - the lockers are worth mentioning. Large, well ventilated, well drained. Noise-proofing of the rooms is a slight problem, but not too serious.

It is 100m (slightly uphill) from the slope ticket office, so only ski-in, walk back out. The convenience shop is right next door, and stocks beer, wine, snacks, and a reasonable selection of sandwiches and frozen meals. And of course you have the choice to stroll over to the other pubs and restaurants - make sure you visit the lounge in Lizard Creek Lodge - nice open fireplace, and excellent view of the mountain.

Thanks for pointing out the 'Slopeside' name change!! Yes the Wolf's Den is now the Slopeside and it is a much more fitting name as the hotel is located slopeside at Fernie Alpine Resort. Conveniently located near lifts, food and the convenience store called the Mountain Pantry. Also great to note the one of the best places to enjoy sitting by the fire is at Lizard Creek Lodge

....not cheap enough, staff friendly but room horribly 2 star, beds old and lumpy, furntiture old and poor quality, bedding all very nylon, walls and floors paper thin, was woken up both nights a number of times, wifi not working, heating not really connected to the thermostat - pretty ropey all in all, left very tired.

Avoid

Dear OmanRob,

Thank you for your review although i would like to extend our apologies for the inconveniences and quality of your stay.

I would like to mention that in January 2014 Fernie Slope Side went through not only a renovation and refurbishment but also new Management and Owners. All new appliances, linens, bedding, furniture, improved wifi quality and connection, service and necessary repairs to Lodge facilities.

We do hope that you will give a second chance to redeem our selves either through the summer or next ski season.

Kind Regards,

After reading other reviews, I wasn't expecting too much. On arrival, the staff were very friendly and the lobby didn't look too bad, a little bit dated but I can live with that. Got to our room, not a bad size for 2 people, I guess it would be a little cramped if 4 people were sharing. The room, like the lobby, was dated, that would've been ok if it wasn't so grubby. The curtains and bedding had holes in, the coffee machine had not been washed as it still had coffee in it from the previous occupants, there were crumbs on the window sill and all over the floor, the fridge was filthy and there were dodgy stains on the bathroom floor and around the toilet bowl. The room had obviously not been cleaned. As far as I could see, the only thing house keeping did when they came in, was straighten the towels & bedding and put a couple of toilet rolls in the bathroom, the room did not get cleaned in the two weeks we were stayed there. The only reason I did not give the Wolfs den a 'terrible' was down to the location. I would never stay at this place again, if possible stay somewhere else!

Great location for skiing but staying in Spring meant the village itself was very quiet - and what was opened closed early.

The hotel itself is badly in need of some investment. One in 3 lights in the bathroom were working (we told the staff but nothing happened), the blanket on the bed was so thin it had holes in places, the beds sagged. It has so much potential but falls short currently.
