Howard Johnson Inn Woodstock NB
Ranked #2 of 4 Hotels in Woodstock
Reviewed 14 October 2013

We usually stay in Houlton after a 9 hour drive before crossing the border on our way to Cape Breton. When we arrived and learned that our hotel in Maine would be without power overnight, we found this to be unacceptable so we drove on. We had a very easy border crossing at dinner time, and began to look for an hotel in Woodstock.

Howard Johnson Inn was the first place we saw. The receptionist, Amy, was very pleasant and helpful and showed us several available room types. She also recommended a place one exit away on the highway where we could get dinner.

The room we settled on overlooked the pool. We can't understand why anyone would particularly want to overlook the pool; we choose this room because it was quieter than the ones in the separate block which overlooked the highway.

The hallway was dark dingy, and the staircase very unpleasant, but the room itself was OK. The bed was comfortable; the linens were clean; there was free wi-fi; the TV worked, although without a guide it was difficult to find anything to watch without surfing. The big problem was the light spilling into the room through the curtains, which did not fully close; there was no way to fix this and it made sleeping a little difficult.

Breakfast was complimentary - the usual suspects: cereal, muffins, bagels, bananas, juices, and coffee. Enough to get one started on the day. The Breakfast Room in the lower level next to the 'Fitness Centre" was barren and uninviting, but the breakfast was free and quick.

It was an unexpected surprise to learn that crossing the border at night and being able to stay at Hojos was easier than staying in Maine and continuing on to Canada the following day. We will return to here on our next trip north.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the pool are quieter than the ones that face the road; however, there is light...

We do offer a variety of rooms as Amy had shown you in order to accommodate our guests preferences, the pool room being just one of those options. Perhaps on your next visit you may choose a drive up room which is located directly behind the main building. Thus offering a room farther from the noise of the highway as well as no light coming through into your room.

During your stay, our cable provider was having technical issues with the TV guide.
We understand that this can certainly be frustrating however technical issues do occur that are beyond our control.

We would like to thank you for your feedback and we look forward to seeing you in the future.

We were pleasantly surprised at this motel. We hadn't expected much, and it was actually clean and spacious and had good beds.
Something is wrong with the soil or something; all the sidewalk areas are heaving or settling, and the exterior stairs are pulling away from the sidewalks, but our room didn't move during the night, so.....

The breakfast was good, but a bit of a challenge to find. There used to be a restaurant, but it closed, so the breakfast area in in a basement room somewhere around the indoor swimming pool.

We are happy to hear your room was spacious as well as clean. With the heavy frost that we receive in Atlantic Canada it certainly does affect the sidewalks and various steps that are placed outside.

The breakfast room can be a little tricky to find. There is not a lot of signage as the breakfast is actually offered in a different location on site during the peak months to better accommodate the larger amount of guests. However our Front Desk staff is always available to help you in any away that we can.

Thank you for your valuable feedback.

okay, i am not a big fan of howard johnson hotels. no secret. but this place was there when we needed it after a long, tiring day, and i thought... 'why not!!?? well, - very clean rooms! pet friendly and my jack 'hercules' was on the ready the minute the receptionist mentioned there was a fox known to have dropped by now and then on the grounds of the hotel - not uncommon in this area of course! lots of room for the pets, a very cool indoor swimming facility, and this hotel was easily accessed from the highway. friendly, helpful people - they couldn't do enough for us. i enjoyed this hojo and would stay here again - no doubt!! this was a very reasonable hotel and it was fairly priced. no worries here, if you are in the area and need a hotel, this facility will do a very good job of providing a good, rejuvenating rest.

The room had been refitted and was very clean with good bed coverings. Small bath towel and loud air conditioning unit. Everything else was very acceptable. Indoor pool was good. Breakfast was presented better than most and had very good service. Receptionist were very good.

Room Tip: All pretty well the same.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated. We are happy to hear that your experience at our location as well as with our staff was acceptable.

The air conditioning unit is a bit louder than we would prefer them to be as it is not a central air unit but rather an in room unit. Our bath towels are of standard size for hotel use. Extra bath towels are always available at our Front Desk if you should require more due to the size of the towels during your next stay.

Nothing fancy here but the kids loved the pool and the location was great for us. We used this as a mid point stop before going home. The staff were very friendly, the rooms were very clean and the breakfast was filling.

Room Tip: I would asked for a pool side room. The outside room we stayed in was facing the highway and the roa...

This hotel is tired and frayed around the edges. The furniture is cheap-looking and the carpets and linens are threadbare. The doors, which open directly to the outdoors, are thin with flimsy locks that could probably be popped open with a car key. No chain on the door. The staff was reasonably efficient. I was surprised to have to wait on line when we arrived at 2:00 am but that's not the hotel's fault.

Amenities were sparse. Breakfast was cold cereal, plastic-wrapped muffins, and defrosted frozen bagels. There was bread, so you could make yourself toast.

There was a pool, but it opened at 10:00 am, by which time we were long gone.

Great location for that half way trip mark right over the border from houlton. Rooms were clean and opened to the street which was since since I wanted to secure my bike. Had a good night's sleep and breakfast was your normal cereal and bagel's etc... I would stay again if in transit, maybe not for a long haul though. All staff was super friendly and very helpful.

Room Tip: stock up before you get there ... closest snacks/etc. is a stop or two down the major highway.
