“Great Stay at Clevelands House”
Reviewed 18 August 2014

Stayed at Clevelands House for a weekend this August 2014. From our entry into the office to our exit my wife had a great time. We found the grounds emaculate and the employees extremely friendly and helpful. We stayed in one of the regular rooms and it was clean and ready for us when we got there. Nothing too fancy but it was clean and comfortable. For a place that has been around for over a hundred years it was about what we expected. We don't spend much time in the room when visiting places like this (why go somewher to sit in a room?) so it was fine. The deck railing outside our room needed some repair but everything else seemed ok. The breakfast was very good and sitting out on the deck in the evening overlooking the lake at Dukes was very relaxing. I would recommend this place to my friends and would visit again.

Thank you for your kind words and your wonderful review "Fred S". Nothing makes us happier than to hear from a family who has enjoyed their time in Muskoka and knowing that Clevelands House has had something to do with it! Come back again soon!

We were spending the weekend at a friend's cottage in Muskoka and decided to head up a day early and spend a night at Cleveland's House. I'll preface this by saying we didn't have the best weather when we arrived (girl at the check-in asked us if we brought our snow pants! Very cold day for August.), but the next afternoon the sun came out and we had a few hours of warmth and sunshine.
Pros:
Great location on Rosseau. Our room in North Lodge had a great view over the lake.
Staff was all very friendly.
Abbey's Bakehouse has delicious baked goods. Try the butter tarts and chocolate chip cookies with a brownie baked inside. Not cheap, but very yummy!
Duke's has really good casual food and the atmosphere on a nice day is superb!
The inflatable water park is a lot of fun for the kids, and they have SUPs, canoes and kayaks available free to guests.
Lots of activities included - ping pong, tennis, basketball, mini golf, bootcamp classes, badminton checkers.
We saw the Magical Duda show. The magician (forget his name) was very funny and had the kids laughing the whole time. My kids (12 and 10) thought it was a little corny at first, but still enjoyed the show. His apprentice (think his name was Ryan) wasn't very good, and will need to loosen up if he's going to fill the Magical Duda's shoes.
SWS Watersports staff are fantastic. We hired them for a waterskiing lesson for the kids and the staff were very friendly and patient.
Cons:
The whole resort is a little tired and needs some major maintenance. I know it's 145 years old and rustic is part of the charm, but I was expecting a little more.
Walls are paper thin (we heard every conversation in the hallway and the adjacent rooms)
The wallpaper in our bathroom was peeling.
Lighting in the room was horrible. Limited to one bulb fixture overhead and one bedside lamp. There were 2 bedside tables, but only one lamp.
Wasn't impressed with housekeeping. We found the previous guest's food still in the mini fridge when we arrived. A light in the bathroom was burnt out. We had cobwebs in the corners of our window. These are easy fixes - have a checklist of things to check/clean for each room.
Not sure what was going on with the tv reception, but the flat screen tv was kind of a waste for the fuzzy images we saw. It was like watching one of those old big box tvs in the '80s. Definitely no HD (or anything close to it) here!
Check-in isn't until 4pm and check-out is 11am. The kids couldn't use the waterpark when we checked in (too cold and late in the day) and then only had an hour or so to use it in the morning (opens at 9:30). We checked out, had lunch at Duke's, did the waterski lesson with SWS and then the kids tried to go back to the waterpark, but were told they needed to buy a day pass because theirs had expired. Really, for the price we paid for the tired room our passes should have been honoured for the whole day and allowed us to use the beach past check-out.

After all that, we did enjoy our stay at Cleveland's House (especially the activities) and would probably stay here again. Just lower our expectations and have to stay for more than one night if we want to be able to use the waterpark for more than an hour in the morning.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 106 of North Lodge. Great view over the lake.

What a detailed review you have provided "Bdamo" - thank you! We are happy you found so many things to do while you were with us. The resort's water park is available for a daily fee of $20 per person but for our resort guests we offer a $10 day pass as a special perk. With such a low daily rate, it is difficult to offer a lower, by the hour rate, for this great resort activity. We try our hardest to make sure every guest has access to all of our facilities no matter when they arrive. Just yesterday, a guest arrived at 10am (for a 4pm check in) and was able to get to a free yoga class by 10:30 that morning! Clevelands House is a very important piece of history, but with that history, comes the challenge of keeping the resort looking and feeling fresh. Every year we keep working away on it and every year our guests take note of the work we have done. For this reason, we understand your comments about the older-feel of some of our resort locations and assure you we look at them every year and work on them every summer. Thank you again.

This place feels like Muskoka should. The staff are incredibly helpful. The scenery is inspiring. There are endless activities from which to choose. But we had a hard time getting a good night's sleep. We've been camping before, so I tried to convince myself that this is just like camping, but a notch above. But it was admittedly difficult.

The beds are uncomfortable. We spotted a mousetrap when we walked into our 2-bedroom cottage - this was probably what put me over the edge. But it was all of the other positive aspects of this resort that kept us there.

The kids' camps and activities are amazing. We loved the options and flexibility here. They are not included in the price. So it does turn out to be an expensive stay. Which is why I feel that we can expect more of our accommodations.

Either the prices need to drop to reflect the accommodations you get, or they need to seriously improve these cabins and rooms in order to get up to a 4- or 5-star rating.

For those of you looking for a more comfortable stay, the JW Marriott is right next door. It has beautiful accommodations. But the kids' activities don't seem to compare to Clevelands House. So pick your pleasure!

Things we liked at Clevelands House:
- great outdoor space
- tennis courts
- shuffleboard
- access to a lot of water sports (not included in price), canoes, kayaks, paddleboards (included in price)
- great hiking
- beach area right in front of our cabin
- nightly entertainment
- kids' camps
- great social scene for families
- short drive to Port Carling for additional restaurant options
- Abby's Bake House
- yoga on the water

We will likely return to Clevelands House because the kids had so much fun. I desperately hope not to see any mouse traps hidden under dressers during my next stay.

Thank you for your review "WeSawIt". You have provided a great list of things you enjoyed and we are very happy you did. So many people come to the resort and fall in love with our property and the never ending list of things to do. It is Muskoka at it's best! We apologize for the mouse trap and find it a little embarrassing to be honest. We know a getaway in Muskoka comes with it's share of critters and as such we have a very rigorous process of pest control. However, from time to time, we use the old fashioned method to help them check out of a room if they have stayed too long and we are careful to keep this process quick and very sanitary. It is seldom that we ever have to do so. Once again, thank you for your review and we hope to see you again soon!

I would recomended this place to anyone that reads this. It was a great getaway!!

We are a frequent visitors to this resort. It's a great place with a lot to offer families and it gets high marks from us for that. A great kids camp, water activities, game room, fun things to do in the evening, an ice cream parlor, etc. all make this a fantastic place for a family to spend a week. However, there's one big issue which keeps my review from being better. Cleveland's House advertises 16 tennis courts but all of these tennis courts are in a general state of disrepair. Can't they resurface at least some of them? Instead all the courts have cracks galore with grass growing out of some of them and many broken nets. Please consider sprucing the place up and start with the tennis courts! A lot more people would come back!

Thank you for your review "Scotty2hottie" and for the personal rating of "high marks" from your family. We appreciate it very much! We are also happy to announce that we are currently working on a program to upgrade our tennis courts for 2015, with the first 8 of our courts scheduled for a resurfacing this spring! Winters in Muskoka can certainly be testy on a tennis court as we only had them refinished (albeith not resurfaced) three seasons ago! Tennis is alive and well at Clevelands House and we plan to keep it that way. Thank you!

We travelled here with our two children 4 and 1. The grounds are kept nice and the beach and scenery was very nice. We stayed in one of the renovated cottages which was ok.. However you can see from walking around that the buildings exterior all over the resort are in desperate need of repair and in some cases a complete tear down and re-build would probably be the best. Overall we had a good time considering it rained for two days. One suggestion is that they have a large room inside with a pool table, darts, card table, chess, tv, etc for days which is rains non stop. With two small kids it's hard to entertain them in such a tiny cottage. The kids programs were great and my 4 year old loved it. However that area also needs new fencing, toys inside, etc Looked a little dirty and dungy for Toddlers.

Hello "Melanie D" and thank you for your review! Of course, we agree that our property and scenery are incredible - we may very well have the best lakefront location in Muskoka! That said, we also know we have a few spots on our property that need some attention due to the historic nature of the resort. We are proud to tell you that many of our outdoor facilities are scheduled for minor to major refurbishments next season. With regards to our day camp area, this is the first time I have received feedback on it's physical appearance and I will be touring that area today with our maintenance team. Our day camp is one of a kind and a place for families and children that we are very proud of, your feedback will be taken to heart ASAP. Thank you once again for your review!

After we booked, we read many negative reviews and were nervous about our decision to stay there. We were pleasantly surprised. Our room was ready when we arrived and was clean and had a great window view of the lake. Staff was very pleasant. We only stayed one night, but were not disappointed.

Room Tip: We asked for a room with 2 double beds, and got lucky with the location.
