Our stay at the Kaulbach House was wonderful. David and Jenny are both warm, friendly, and have a great sense of humor. The house is very well taken care of - clean and well-maintained, down to the last detail. Jenny's breakfasts were substantial and delicious, and David made us feel right at home. The room had everything we needed - coffeemaker, iron, toiletries, TV, wifi, air conditioning, and a view of the harbor. A small fridge was available and wine & beer glasses and a corkscrew were available. We never needed any housekeeping in our room, but I'm sure if we did it would have been taken care of without any problems. The room was quiet and it was great to have shutters to keep out the early morning sunshine. David was very helpful with advice about what to see and do, and directions on how to get there.

The only tiny details that I would change were the less-than-stellar showerhead and the hotel-style hairdryer, but those were minor hiccups and didn't detract from our stay. The Kaulbach House was a perfect place to stay in Lunenberg.

Room Tip: Dockside has a great view of the harbor.

As soon as David , the owner opens the door you know you are in comfort and home . I loved staying here . My husband john is not much for b&b but he is now open after our stay here .wonderful bright clean room on the top floor , delicious breakfast . I consider myself a coffee snob , ( if the first cuppa of the day isn't top drawer I am looking all day ) here at kaulbach the coffee is a divine way to start your day . AND his wife jane cooks gluten free if needed . Would I stay again , I won't stay anywhere else in area for next visit but at Kaulbach . Home away fr home in elegance .

Can't say enough good things about this B&B. The hosts are great. David took the time to orient us in town, offer dining suggestions and told us about places to visit.

We had a fantastic harbour facing room which was most spacious and comfortable. The bed was super comfortable and we got a great night's sleep. Very quiet location, even though you are in the centre of town. Take a few minutes to sit in the Widow's Watch and see what is going on in town. Great view.

You can walk all of old Lunenburg from Kaulbach House easily.

Breakfast was wonderful and filling.

Room Tip: Try to get a harbour-facing room, great view and the street is quiet.

My wife and I stayed at the Kaulbach house this past week end, we had stayed there a few years ago and were quite pleased to see the Inn as it was in our souvenirs, beautiful, clean and quite charming, additionally David and Jenny were just outstanding hosts, with great tourist advise, place to visit, you HAVE to go to the La Have bakery, as well as all kind of little tips and directions to make our week end more enjoyable.
We had the bluenose suite which is at the top floor with a great view on the atlantic ocean, the rooms were very clean specious and comfortable, the breakfast was served at 8 and was excellent, fresh and tasty, if you are in Lunenburg, this place is a great place to stay!

We just returned from Lunenberg and loved this beautiful little town. The town is just charming. We stayed at the 1880 kaulbach House while we were there.....the inn is certainly charming in it's own as it has a great location, beautiful room, good breakfast and kind and helpful hosts. We had reserved the attic room and were so happy we did. It was a trek up the stairs but worth it. We had a little sitting area overlooking the North Atlantic. We sat and enjoyed coffee there in the morning and wine in the evening. Just beautiful! Only issue we had was that the room was never serviced. We were asked if we needed anything in our room and said "no" but didn't think that this meant that bathroom and bedroom wouldn't be serviced nor the dirty glasses/cups removed. We brought our own cups/glasses down to public area but they were still there the next day. The inn is up for sale, so this may have impacted the situation as the innkeeper's wife was not feeling well. But was a good experience overall.....just wish Large Marge's would open!

Thank you for your comments. I am very pleased that overall your stay with us was a pleasant one but sorry that not all aspects were to your satisfaction.
A full housekeeping service is available for stays of more than one night but we find the majority of guests prefer the privacy of an undisturbed room. It is normal practice for David to ascertain the preferences of individual guests around breakfast time. Clearly there was a misunderstanding on this occasion and we are naturally very sorry for this. Had we been aware of the problem at the time we would have made amends. The comment about dirty glasses left in a public area is surprising and puzzling but after the event it is difficult to get to the root of how this could have occurred.
I must contest the inference at the end of your review which implies that we have given up on standards because Kaulbach House is currently on the market. This could not be further from the truth. It is an unfortunate fact that owing to arthritis my involvement in the servicing of the rooms is less 'hands on' than it used to be. However the standard I demand from my housekeeping staff ensures our usual high standards are maintained. Comments from our 2013 guests bear testament to this. The fact that Kaulbach House is currently for sale has no bearing whatsoever on this unfortunate misunderstanding. We will continue to maintain our high standards of upkeep and service as long as we remain owner/operators of Kaulbach House.

My folks and I spent our first night in Nova Scotia at the 1880 Kaulbach House Historic Inn. After a long day of travel with a flight delay, we rolled into Lunenburg at approximately 8pm. The proprietor Dave welcomed us warmly, saw us to our room, and gave us restaurant suggestions. Although this was out first stay at this inn, we felt like we were staying with an old friend and should not have a care in the world during our visit. We stayed in the Bluenose Suite, which is on the top floor (don't book this room if you have trouble with stairs). The room was immaculate (as was the entire property) and had a wonderful view of the bay. Breakfast was served to all guests at the same time in a breakfast parlor (one table per room). Breakfast was terrific - hearty, fresh, non-greasy food. Coffee and tea were poured in abundance. What made a stay at this inn a vacation for me is that Dave accommodated the dietary restrictions within our party, making ingredient substitutions were necessary. My father who is never happy with meal selections on the road and who normally finds fault with most properties was ecstatic with the personalized care and concern shown to him. He thought this inn was one of the best properties he ever stayed at - an endorsement that is not easy to come by. I encourage anyone visiting Lunenburg to stay at the Kaulbach Inn in the center of town to enjoy its history, location, and welcoming, flawless hospitality.

Room Tip: The Bluenose Suite has a wonderful view, though not for those with trouble on stairs. There is no el...

We have been staying at B&B's more recently, and the 1880 Kaulbach House was our choice in Lunenburg. We chose it for its location near the waterfront, restaurants, and activities. We weren't diappointed. We had the enire thrid floor to ourselves, and we enjoyed it immensely. Breakfast was excellent, and the discussions with the other guests was very interesting and rewarding as far as what to do and what to see (something we have found is a very important aspect of our enjoyment of B&Bs.)
Our hosts David and his wife Jenny were very gracious, and made some very good suggestions both for in town as well as when we were heading out. David suggested taking "the road less travelled" and we were able to visit several small stops and lookouts that we would otherwise have missed. An excellent stay.
