After quite a number of weeks of searching and reviewing multiple B&Bs along the Strait of Georgia, on Vancouver Island, we chose Beachside. We were not disappointed. We pulled in at night because of a day packed with driving and exploring, but this did not phase them at all. Verna warmly greeted us as we arrived and showed us our room and the amenities shared by guests in the common area. There was a fridge to store anything we wanted chilled; two coffee pots (one decaf and one reg?); a tea maker; a one-and-done flavoured espresso maker; and dishes under the microwave in case we chose to eat in.
After we settled in, she greeted us outside as we were taking in the lovely beachside views and inquired if we would like a glass of wine. Happily we accepted. What a perfect way to 'wine' down the day!
Later after greetings were had by all; other couple and Warren too. They inquired when we would like to eat breakfast the next day, and when I told them that we would manage on our own because we had to leave at 730 am to make our caving excursion, Verna softly insisted that we allow her to take care of us. They packed us our breakfast to go. I could hear Verna, or Warren, early the next morning making sure that we had coffee (and they supplied to-go cups!) and our packed breakfast on the counter. What service!
However, it did not stop there. One of their returning guests had mentioned during breakfast how they loved oysters and Warren decided to grill oysters that evening for them. Folks, he did not just go to the store ... He got into his row boat and paddled around the point and collected them himself, and cleaned the shells so they could be grilled on the half-shell. (I know this because my husband and I thought we would offer our service to help, but really - we just gave Warren almost 300lbs extra to row...)
That evening we had wonderful grilled oysters on the half shell, served in a lovely black bean sauce that Verna had made. Than, Verna brought out some wine, but it wasn't over after that - Verna and all the guests brought out some little items of snacks; a bottle of wine; a bottle of port (can't take alcohol over the border); and we sat in front of a wood fire talking til too late into the night.
Going to bed late did not deter our hosts though. They rose early and made another amazing breakfast. It was so good! Where did they learn to cook like that?! I must add here that my husband is gluten intolerant and does not use dairy, but this did not keep them from creating such succelent breakfasts.
All in all folks, this place is worth it. Do not consider a place for less simply because you think you can not afford it. You can not afford to miss this. The service; the amenities; the personalities of Warren and Verna; the beach (with lots of life in amongst the rocks and sand *ie clams galore!); and the rooms - all will leave a memorable experience that you will treasure forever.
