Mt. Burgess Guesthouse
Ranked #4 of 6 Field B&B and Inns

Every guesthouse in Field has the impressive view of mountains and squeaky noise of railway. But this GH is spotless clean and quite inviting, kind of like grandma's cozy cottage feeling. The kitchen is very well stocked. Nice matching plates (unlike other places - a bunch of radom stuff). It has tea, coffee and a small bottle of extra virgin olive oil too! The garden is lovely
And has BBQ facility. The old couple who look after the guesthouse are friendly kiwis but they only stay in Field for a couple of months.

A couple of things to keep in mind. A) Forget the Grandma's TV. Read books instead. B) There is a shower unit but no bath tub. C) They don't accept credit card but cash or traveller's check. There is no ATM in town. D) The checkout time is 10 am not 11 am. In addtion, If you want to do some cooking, have your grocery done in Banff. The only grocery store in town has canned food and 3~ kinds of veggies. Nevertheless, the only restaurant in town is excellent.

In short, we definitely recommend this GH to our friends and families.

Because of the reviews on Tripadvisor, we booked and stayed in this guesthouse for 4 nights. Even thought we found it espacious it doesn’t have many other things that in my opinion a guesthouse should have.

The only good thing is that it’s big enough for two, I don’t know how big it would be for 4 people... I’m not too sure there shall be enought space for 4, even thought you can find 3 beds in the room.

I found it quite pricy compared to what the place offers.... Even though guesthouses in Field are expensive, I think you find this one more expensive as you don’t find some important details in the room...

For instance, I didn’t like that they didn’t have a coffee machine, nor complimentary coffee or tea... or not even sugar... The shower was terrible... water presuare was very bad and it took us a long time everyday to take a proper shower.

TV only had one channel... and it couldn’t be seen properly, the small table fan didn’t work either...

They wouldn’t collect our rubish in the four days...

I didn’t mind as much that we didn’t have any complementary shampoo, soup or anything similar in the bathroom... but we ran out of toilet paper on our last day and as they didn’t care about our stay we didn’t have a replacement the previous days... I know we could have asked for it... (that was what I would have to have done if we had stayed there longer, but one expects these little important details to be look after before having to ask...)

It didn’t have Internet available or washing machine... or a place to do the washing, so if you’re expecting long stays... do your washing before coming or use the sink!

Even though, the couple that looked after the house were nice and tried their best, they should take in count all this important things... I wouldn’t especially recomend this place for more then a day stay... you can probably find better in Field.

Although it’s been seven years since your review, as new owners of Mt. Burgess Guesthouse (May 2017), we would like to thank you for having taken the time to review your stay. We truly value guests’ feedback and are sorry that the guesthouse did not meet your expectations. A lot has changed since 2010 and continues to change as we strive to improve our accommodation with every stay.
With the mention of 3 beds, you must have stayed in the Wilf Carter Suite. The Wilf Carter Suite squeezes a proper 1-bedroom apartment into 518 square feet. I agree it is certainly spacious for two, and roomy enough for three. For parties of four, we recommend the Tom Wilson Suite.
Price-wise, our rates are competitive locally and way less than accommodation in Emerald Lake, Lake Louise and Banff. Suites with full kitchens cost more: 1. Insurance-policy-wise having a stove is a liability 2. Cleaning kitchens and neutralizing cooking smells can add up to a lot more work .... Of course, I cannot speak to the rate you paid in 2010.
Yes, coffee is important! Especially the first cup of the day. The suites now include a conventional drip coffee machine, coffee grinder, French Press and complementary coffee, tea and sugar. We have upgraded the cookware and furnished each suite with a ‘Nutri Bullet’ for making great power drinks, sauces, etc. One small add-on or improvement at a time.
The garden suites have their own ginormous water heaters with tons of pressure enough hot water for a family of 4. The shampoo-soap dispensers are always full.
Guest privacy is important: it is our policy not to intrude on the living space guests create during their stay. We encourage guests to let us know if there is anything at all they need. Recycling, compost & kitchen garbage bins can be left on the deck for us to deal with or put it in an appropriate bin outside in the garbage management area.
We offer free Wi-Fi and Satellite TV (with 100s of channels). We are, however, considering terminating Satellite TV and beefing up our internet service instead as our guest surveys consistently show “we are not here to watch TV”.
We have addressed your review to let you know that, even now, your feedback is important and very much appreciated; and to let potential guests know that any issues you pointed out no longer exist.
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas Carlotta, and great adventures in 2018! – Julia & Greg

Stayed in the Wilf Carter Suite. Plenty of room!! Quiet. Everything was clean and comfortable. Kitchenette is well supplied. Will take a credit card as a deposit, but don't forget to bring cash or a cheque to actually pay for the room.
Field is really close to the Natural Bridge, Emerald Lake and Takakkaw Falls (1,265 feet high).
Mt. Burgess Guesthouse is steps away from the 2 best restaurants in tiny, beautiful Field - Truffle Pig and the new Cherchez La Vache. Truffle Pigs Cafe's waiting list was too long, so went across the road to Cherchez La Vache (where Truffle Pigs used to be) for dinner. Shorter waiting list. Had their dinner special. Delicious!!!
Still thinking about their Strawberry and Walnut Crepes I had there for breakfast. Delicious!!!!
Truffle Pigs Cafe popularity necessitated a move across the road into a classier looking room at the Kicking Horse Lodge. Thank goodness, they left the quirky, eye catching decor for the Vache (cow).

We stayed at the Tom Wilson Suite... very nice large suite with full kitchen and living area..... the facility is slightly older... but it has its charm .... the bed room can use a thicker curtain as street light was very powerful.... the place is reasonably priced ($120/night actual vs $110 on website) in September. The 3 Pigs grocery store/bistro in front of guest house is convenient though a bit pricey/limited hours....... but we liked the Field town and location for its peace and laid back temperament........... Derrick (caretaker) was nice and old friendly guy with lot of enery and welcoming smile.... at end of September though it was cold and icy and not much fresh veggies in the garden though :-) ...

My wife and I stayed at the Mt Burgess Guesthouse for two nights in September 2006. We had hoped to stay at Lake Louise but weren't happy to pay the price of the accommodation there. After a bit of searching, we found that the small town of Field has a number of guesthouses. Field is located about a 20 minute drive west of Lake Louise. I was happy to spend the 20 minutes each way (great scenery anyway) rather than pay triple the price.

We paid CAN $110 per night for what was, in effect, a fully self contained unit. It looks a little aged but there was a kitchen, lounge, bedroom, bathroom and small kitchen area. The unit was well equipped with everything you need. We were able to purchase some supplies from the supermarket (at Golden) and cooked our own meals etc.

The owner of the premises, and his manager, live on site. We never met the owner but the manager was a New Zealander who was there for a three month stint. He was very helpful and obliging.

There are two units available - we had the 'Wilf Carter'. It was spacious and very warm and comfortable. There was also a selection of books for the avid reader.

The only downside was the TV. The unit only had a small portable black and white TV that looked like it had seen better days. Considering the town only gets the one channel, TV viewing was not the best but this was little price to pay for a well kitted out unit.

The guesthouse is in a great location with good views. There is also lettuces growing in the garden to which the guests may help themselves.

In the photo, the 'Wilf Carter' unit is the open door on the right.
