Within easy walk of golf course and eating establishments and with nice bar facilities, Upon payment and getting a key it was obvious that the room was dated and the wooden joinery hopeless at locking out traffic noise etc from outside. The bathroom smelt badly of previous smoking.Worse was the drunken shrieking and shouting from people staying who used the pool area in the courtyard until I rang the night porter at 1.30am to plead for him to stop the noise. This then shifted the noise inside and paper thin walls meant no sleep until 3.am. DO NOT stay here if you intend a good nights sleep.

Known as a suburban pub hotel, don't be fooled if the outside looks like a 2 storey block of motel units. Some rooms have recently been refurbished. We were attracted to the price of the cheaper rooms but upon inspection we chose a refurbished room for $20 more. To me, our room was a cross between a motel room and a hotel room. I don't know what the interior looked like before, but the room been done up nicely (except for the cheap warped plastic toilet seat), was clean and tidy. We even had cooking facilities (but didn't use them as there are plenty of places to eat within a short walk). Easy access to motorway north and south.

Now for the BAD... The worst was that the walls are very thin and not very soundproof. At one point we could almost follow the conversation of the guests next door! We couldn't get the room dark at night (there is very bright lighting outside, which is good security for your car, but not good if it shines in at night). Then there is a lot of noise from the on-site pub till late, we stayed on a week night but still noisy patrons. Do not stay here if you want peace and quiet and a sound sleep, or if you have small children that go to bed early. The room smelled a bit musty, despite the refurbishment. Didn't use the pool or the outdoor spa, because they're in full view of the patrons of the pub and didn't feel like being ogled in my bathing suit.

In summary, although the refurbished room was attractive and affordable, we would not stay here again.

Room Tip: Choose a refurbished room, the cheaper rooms are very basic and dated.

The hotel has a lot of facilities at its door step: trendy bar, pool, pizza restaurant and Mongolian restaurant. The rooms were ok. A bit dark and functional. The location is about 20 minutes on two buses outside of Auckland. I suppose that's ok if you have a car but then you'd have to drive into Auckland and pay daily rip off rates. Overall, it's nice enough but probably better to stay central. However, the staff were very helpful and polite.

Being in the centre, Poenamo has the ideal address for all of the North Shore as well as motorways north and south. If arriving after normal business hours though, just make sure you have a working local mobile phone in your possession as you will need one to call the night porter on an 0800 number to check in. Adjacent is a selection of bars, a pizza outlet and a buffet restaurant. All round a handy place that represents great value for money.
